Epson Expression Photo XP-8700 Wireless All-in One Color Printer
Summary of Customer Reviews
The Epson Expression Photo XP-8700 Wireless All-in-One Color Printer is largely praised by users for its vibrant color reproduction and versatility in handling different media types. Many users appreciate its compact size, which fits well into home or small office environments without taking up much space. Customers who use the printer mainly for photo printing are particularly impressed with its sharp, detailed images, with many comparing it favorably to older models like the Canon Pixma or Epson Artisan. The printer’s ability to produce professional-quality photos at home is a recurring theme in reviews, and users frequently mention how it meets or exceeds their expectations for a printer in this price range. Additionally, features like the touchscreen control panel and wireless connectivity are commonly mentioned as highlights that make the printer easy to use and convenient for various tasks.
Several customers also mentioned the reliable performance of the printer when it comes to general office tasks, such as printing documents, scanning, and copying. The printer’s dual paper trays and automatic document feeder were appreciated for making day-to-day printing more efficient, especially for those who need to switch between different paper types. However, the printer also has some drawbacks that were frequently pointed out by users. Many customers noted that the printer tends to use ink quite quickly, and replacing the ink can be costly, especially since it uses six separate cartridges. Some users found the print speed to be slower than expected, especially for double-sided prints or high-resolution photos. There were also several reports of connection issues, particularly with Wi-Fi, making the setup process more frustrating for some. These problems were mostly noted by users who rely heavily on wireless printing, as occasional disconnections hindered their productivity.
In general, users who prioritize photo quality and ease of use seem satisfied with the Epson XP-8700, while those needing faster print speeds or more economical ink usage expressed some dissatisfaction. Despite these issues, the printer’s excellent photo output makes it a popular choice for personal and creative projects.
PROS
- Vibrant Color Quality: Users consistently praised the vibrant and true-to-life colors produced by the Epson XP-8700, especially when printing photos. Many mentioned that the quality of the prints is comparable to professional photo labs, which makes the printer an attractive option for those who enjoy printing their own photographs. One user mentioned, “The colors are sharp, prints fast, is quiet, a little hard on ink, but the quality is clear.”
- Compact Design: The printer’s compact footprint was highlighted as a major advantage by several users, who appreciated its ability to fit easily into smaller spaces without compromising on functionality. This makes it ideal for home offices, small apartments, or any setting where space is limited. As one user stated, “It’s at least half the size of the Artisan 1430 and produces the same quality color printing.”
- User-Friendly Interface: Many customers found the touchscreen control panel and intuitive setup process easy to navigate, which simplified the printer’s operation. The printer’s menus are straightforward, and users were happy with the guidance provided during setup. One reviewer noted, “Control panel is exactly as it should be: user-friendly with no confusing steps.”
- Versatile Media Handling: The printer’s ability to handle various types of paper, including thick photo paper and even CDs/DVDs, is seen as a valuable feature by many. This versatility allows users to take on a wide range of creative projects, from personalized photo albums to custom CD labels. A reviewer said, “It prints beautifully on all sorts of media, including DVDs, which I needed for my projects.”
- Wireless Connectivity: Users enjoyed the convenience of being able to print wirelessly from their phones or other devices, adding to the printer’s ease of use. This feature makes it easy to print directly from cloud storage or mobile devices, which is particularly beneficial for users who need to print from multiple sources. One customer said, “Connecting wirelessly to my iMac was very easy, and I can print directly from my phone.”
CONS
- High Ink Consumption: One of the most commonly mentioned downsides is the printer’s high ink consumption, which can make running costs steep over time. Users noted that while the printer uses six different cartridges to achieve high-quality prints, this also means frequent replacements, leading to higher expenses. As one user put it, “This printer goes through ink quickly, and the cost of replacing cartridges is high, especially when using OEM inks.”
- Slow Print Speed: Several users complained about the printer’s speed, particularly when printing double-sided documents or high-resolution photos. This issue was particularly problematic for users who frequently print large batches of photos or double-sided documents, which require more time. A reviewer noted, “It’s rather slow when printing, and double-sided prints take much longer compared to my previous printer.”
- Wi-Fi Connectivity Issues: Some users experienced connectivity issues, particularly with Wi-Fi setup and stability. The Wi-Fi connection problems were more pronounced in environments with multiple devices or when using mesh networks. One customer mentioned, “The Wi-Fi connection was unreliable, often causing failed print jobs. It’s frustrating if you rely heavily on wireless printing.”
- Noisy Operation: While the print quality is generally praised, a few users found the printer to be quite noisy, especially during large print runs. This can be particularly disruptive in home environments where noise levels need to be kept low. One reviewer said, “It’s a bit noisy, which can be annoying when printing multiple pages late at night.”
- Occasional Print Quality Problems: A handful of users reported issues with print quality, such as streaking or blotchy prints, especially when using non-Epson ink. Users found that while original Epson ink provided the best results, third-party cartridges often led to decreased print quality. One user stated, “Despite running multiple cleaning cycles, I still see lines and oversaturated spots on my photos.”
Who Should Buy?
The Epson Expression Photo XP-8700 is well-suited for users who prioritize high-quality photo printing and need a compact all-in-one device for home or small office use. It’s ideal for photographers, artists, and craft enthusiasts who need vibrant color prints for their projects. The printer’s versatility in handling different types of media, such as DVDs and thick photo paper, makes it a great choice for those who frequently work with creative materials. Additionally, the printer is a solid choice for users who value convenience and wireless capabilities, as it allows for seamless printing from various devices. However, it may not be the best option for users who require fast print speeds or need to manage printing costs due to the high ink consumption. Users looking for an economical option may find the frequent cartridge replacements cumbersome and costly.
Do Users Recommend It?
Overall, most users recommend the Epson XP-8700 for its excellent photo quality and ease of use, particularly for printing vibrant, high-resolution images. Many reviewers believe that the compact size and versatility outweigh the drawbacks, such as high ink consumption and slower speeds. Users who prioritize photo output quality are especially pleased, noting that the printer delivers results comparable to more expensive models. The ability to produce lab-quality prints at home is frequently mentioned as a reason for recommending this printer. However, those seeking a more economical printing solution or faster document printing may find this printer less appealing. For individuals who need a reliable device primarily for everyday document printing, there may be more suitable alternatives on the market. Despite its limitations, the Epson XP-8700 remains a favorite for users focused on high-quality photo and creative printing, and many agree that its strengths make it a worthwhile investment for those needs.

Well-designed printer made by an excellent company
I switched from my previous HP photo printers to try the new Epson XP-8700 because I had such a positive experience with the Epson WorkForce ES-60W Wireless Scanner. And man, am I impressed with the Epson company as a whole.
Since I don’t have much desk real estate, I purchased this particular printer for its smaller-than-normal footprint for a multi-function printer. Aesthetically, this printer is very sleek and compact–no awkwardly attached bulky paper sorters or paper trays–just a sleek little back box that tucks away nicely in the corner of my desk. The paper tray automatically extends when printing so you can leave it in the folded storage position when not in use which is a real space-saver.
The set-up took about 20 minutes but was easy and straightforward since Epson does a bang-up job keeping their printer and scanner software up to date and compatible with the newest operating systems. I have an Apple M1 iMac and the drivers all worked seamlessly. Print quality and speed are excellent, and the printer is packed with more features than I’ll ever need.
But what has really impressed me is Epson’s customer service. They REALLY stand behind their products. I needed help with a couple of small issues setting up my scanner and printer, and boy, was I impressed with my experience. The customer service phone tree is easy to navigate, wait time to speak with someone is minimal, and tech support staff actually understand the products. They aren’t the typical service reps that just read prompts from a help manual on their computer screen and make you troubleshoot the same steps you’ve already tried. That being said, Epson’s online product support is well-written and extremely thorough so definitely give any problem a quick Goog, and Epson will most likely already have it covered.
I just can’t recommend Epson products enough. They have really taken care of me as a new customer and have created a fanatic and loyal fan in the process. I LOVE YOU, Epson. Ride or die.

Lacking print quality
Top photo was printed from my old Canon Pixma. Bottom photo is high quality on same paper with this Epson XP8700. Cleaning heads now. Will need major improvement for me not to return. Very disappointed Set up was extremely easy. If only the print quality was as good

Amazing printer for high quality prints!
So far I think this printer has it all! I upgraded from the older model XP-6100 and this new model has everything the older one was missing! I run an Etsy shop selling stickers so the quality MUST be high and also able to print on thick, glossy vinyl paper. This printer has a rear feed tray so no more paper jams or curled paper. The setup was super easy and I was done within 15 minutes. I would highly recommend this printer to anyone that wants high quality prints for a business or photos. If you are wanting a printer just for family/office use I would not get this printer, and save your money for a cheaper HP inspire printer that does great for general use. My only worry with this Epson printer is the ink capacity, and buying ink for me is only online (not offered in store).

Great printer/scanner!
I haven’t used it a lot yet but so far I’m very happy with it. Setting it up and connecting (wirelessly) to my iMac was very easy. The print quality is excellent, and it can handle a wide variety of materials — regular paper, business cards, envelopes, labels, and even print on CDs and DVDs. The ink is supposed to be very durable and fade-resistant, but I haven’t had it long enough to test that personally.
I haven’t needed to contact technical support so I didn’t rate that.

Lady Grk - Love this Epson Expresssion Photo 8700
This is by far the latest technology in printers, I have an old HP Photosmart Printer 5320 that crashed & a
HP Photosmart 6520 which has become my workhorse, but has a tendency to jam paper all the time & frustrate you! Purchased the Epson Expression Photo Printer 8700 from Amazon after having the 8600 which was ok but did not have the large screen & other features I wanted on it, so returned and purchased the Epson Expression Photo 8700 Printer, believe me it’s gem! Colors are sharp, prints fast, is quiet, a little hard on ink, but all inks are expensive, quality is clear and also does DVD, CD labels. Really love this printer. Price was a little high but watch for sale on Amazon. You can print, copy, scan and fax if you like, although I have not used that part of it.
Side by Side the Photosmart 6520 compared to the new Epson Expression Photo 8700 was the colors were more vibrant and clear pixels. Both did a good job, but my 6520 is 10 years old now, and this will be the replacement for sure as the 6520 is dying a slow retirement soon. Set up was easy, follow the steps, but if you plan on buying ink outside of Epson, make sure you order Epson ink and not replacement ink to keep your printer in good condition. Ordered replacement ink for one of my old printers, they leaked and caused issues, safe to order the original to save your machine. I don’t do updates, as they will pop up all the time during your projects, just dismiss and buy ink when needed. Ink is easy to replace, but again
different machine than a Ink Tank Printer, pixels are much better if you are doing a lot of photos and
invitations or stationary sets. Very happy!
It also has a feeder in the back for doing envelopes and large projects. Impressed with this machine, glad I purchased it.

Ease of setup
It was a long journey to get a good photo printer with AirPrint. Ordered an Epson 7100, starting in January, just to find out the first attempt kept getting delayed. Whether it was on a cargo ship or in China somewhere, the delay was over 5 months. Finally got an Epson 8700 and would not boot up properly. Returned that one and got another 8700. Booted up fine. Prints great pictures (4×6) so far. Was worth the wait. Easy setup and has 6 print cartridges. Nice.

very slow printer
Purchased this to replace Epson 830 thinking I was getting an upgrade. I keep having to reposition the photo tray for no reason. Prints very slow and photos are a C.

Very good and compact Color Photo Printer/ Scanner
At first, I was surprised that Printer/ Scanner is so small! It gives me extra space on my Computer table. After I install the software I make a few prints on 8.5 X 14 Epson Presentation matte paper and I like the result because as an Artist/Painter I need the best color possible, especially when I need to print pictures of my own artworks. I don’t use Wireless mode yet, because I connect the printer to my computer by USB cable.

Eats ink, terrible product
Decent printer for the price but if you want true color on photos…think again.
Slow print speed.
Ok, after some time I’m telling people NOT to buy this product… it’s TERRIBLE!
It will not print in simple black and white until ALL ink cartridges are replaced. This just cost me a month’s wages because I couldn’t print a simple black/white UPS pickup Oder!
It’s SLOW, expensive, and not good quality.
I do not recommend and buy something else!
