Summary of Customer Reviews

The HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4101fdw All-in-One Monochrome Wireless Printer receives a mix of positive and negative feedback. Customers appreciate its speed, ease of use, and versatile features, making it a strong choice for small businesses and home offices. However, there are concerns about hardware malfunctions, connectivity issues, and problems with the scanner. Overall, while many users are satisfied, some have encountered frustrating technical issues.

PROS

  • Fast Printing Speed: The printer is widely praised for its quick and efficient printing. One user shared, “This thing is faster than the massive copy machine at my old office”. Its ability to handle large print jobs quickly is a highlight for many.

  • Easy Setup: Many users find the printer setup to be simple and straightforward. One customer mentioned, “I pulled the printer out of the box, connected it to my computer, opened the HP Smart app, and it practically installed itself!”. This ease of setup is a major plus for those who aren’t tech-savvy.

  • Compact Design: The printer’s compact size is ideal for small spaces. A reviewer noted, “The printer is very compact and fits perfectly in my home office”. It’s a great option for users with limited space but still need a reliable device.

  • Duplex Printing & Scanning: The two-sided printing and scanning feature is highly appreciated, especially in office settings. One review stated, “It scans and faxes double-sided documents in a single pass, which is a real time-saver”.

  • Device Compatibility: The printer’s ability to work with a variety of devices, including laptops, phones, and tablets, is frequently highlighted. A Walmart reviewer wrote, “Prints from laptop, cell phones, and iPad… Worth every penny!”.

CONS

  • Frequent Blue Screen Errors: One of the most serious issues reported by users is the “blue screen of death” (BSOD), which renders the printer unusable. One customer noted, “Not 24 hours after installation, the printer displayed a blue screen error and had to be sent back”. This recurring issue is a significant drawback for some users.

  • Network Connectivity Problems: Several users report that the printer struggles to maintain a stable wireless connection. As one user shared, “The printer will NOT maintain a connection to the home network and requires daily reboots”. This can be particularly frustrating for those relying on network printing.

  • Scanner and ADF Issues: Multiple customers have experienced problems with the automatic document feeder (ADF) and the scanner. One review stated, “The Automatic Document Feeder often pulls more than one sheet at a time, making scanning difficult”. Additionally, there have been complaints about jams during scanning jobs.

  • Noise Levels: Some users find the printer noisier than expected. One review mentioned, “When the printer wakes up, it’s louder than my old dot matrix printer”, which could be a concern in quiet environments.

  • High Toner Costs: While the printer itself is considered affordable, several users have expressed concerns about the cost of toner replacements. One user shared, “Toner is expensive… almost the same price as the printer itself”, making it costly to maintain.

Who Should Buy?

The HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4101fdw is an excellent choice for those needing a fast and efficient monochrome printer for home offices or small businesses. Its compact size and ease of use make it ideal for those with limited space or technical expertise. This printer is particularly well-suited for users who need frequent duplex printing and scanning. However, those who rely heavily on wireless printing or need extensive scanning capabilities may encounter issues with the network connectivity and automatic document feeder.

Do Users Recommend This Product?

Overall, users who received a working unit without major issues tend to recommend the HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4101fdw for its speed, print quality, and ease of use. One reviewer summarized their experience by saying, “Great for small office needs, but beware of network and scanning glitches”. While many are satisfied with its performance, the recurring blue screen errors and connectivity problems have left some users hesitant to fully endorse the product.

Worst HP Printer Ever (Ever)

1 star because the first page prints fast.

0 stars because this horrible excuse for a printer will absolutely NOT maintain a connection to your home network, will not stay online, will not stay as the default and will require you to physically shut it off and turn it back on again every single day that you wish to use it.

I have had 3 very knowledgeable IT pros attempt to make it work, and the consensus is that it is apparently 1985 and we need to hardwire the printer in order to solve the daily refusal to print.

Another rock bottom 0 stars for HP the company because you cannot get a live human being who will help you with your $400 printer purchase unless you buy a Protection Plan – when what you need to do is be protected from HP and their inability to provide the most basic of services.

For the record: I have owned HP printers for 15+ years. They all break down after 2.5 – 3.5 years, and they discontinue the model so you are stuck with a $250 toner cartridge that you cannot use in your replacement printer. That, coupled with their refusal to stand behind their products, have taken them from a trusted and reputable company to an inept and out of touch behemoth focused solely on corporate greed and profits. Caveat Emperor.

High tech, very capable home/office laser printer

I really like this printer. Some of the reviews almost persuaded me not to make the purchase, but my previous experience with HP printers overrode that. Very glad I did. I chose not to participate in the HP direct program and am happy to report that the printer installed easily (for a tech savvy person). Within minutes I was able to print on the home wi-fi network including the welcomed ability to print from my phone, and scan to an email address or to the HP app on the phone. Internet connectivity is required to use scan and email functions, but I expected that. Bottom line; a great, fast, clean printing laser printer that exceeds my expectations. Would purchase again.

Great printer and scanner for the price

Very clear scanning and printing. Very easy to use. One important thing to know is that the directions regarding scanning are for setting it up on a network (like at a company office). If you are using it at home for personal use, you don’t need to do all of those steps, and the directions do not clearly tell you that. At home, all you need is Windows Fax & Scan on your computer and you can control all of the capabilities from your computer. It really is a good machine.

Garbage printer, DO NOT BUY

You would think that for the price, you would get a printer that actually prints. That isn’t the case for this HP LaserGarbage Pro 4101. Some days it will print instantly and have no problems. Sometimes you must perform a little dance, it will print 1 page, wait 5 minutes, dance a bit more, then if you’re lucky, it will print the next page. I’m writing this review as I’m waiting for 6 pages to print.

But hey, atleast the toners cheap right? Wrong, its about 200 dollars, almost the cost of the printer itself. Even 3rd party toners for this printer is expensive at around 100 dollars.

Don’t buy this printer, look elsewhere

First things, someone wrote a review saying that for scan duplexing you have to run the page twice. That isn’t correct. The scanner has two cameras but you have to set the scan properties correctly for it to scan in one pass. The reason I don’t like this printer is because the when you log into it to configure it it times you out in a very short time and you cannot alter that setting. This is a major problem when you are learning and becoming familiar with the machine. Secondly, the configuration options are very limited for a business class printer. I have had $200 Brother printers that I’ve had up and running scanning, faxing to email and everything else in an hour and I’m still tweaking this thing after about three weeks.
Whoever at HP thought it was a good idea to log someone out every three minutes and offer no option to increase the timeout should be fired.
Also, you cant log in with your own accounts, at least I haven’t found a way. You have to log in with the PIN number that was assigned to the printer.
It prints nice though and fires out a first page quickly. But it should for 800 or whatever we paid for this black and white printer.

I love it

After many years of fighting with Brother Multi function printers I decided to purchase this HP Model. It has satisfied my needs completely. A large portion of my satisfaction is because of the “HP Smart App”. With this app the setup and management of this printer is GREAT. It allows for printing from all devices iPhone, iPad, Surface3, Windows laptop and my desktop PC.
The printing on both sides of the paper is clear, the scanning and copying are both fast and clear.
The print speed is exceptional.
Overall this printer is exactly what I needed for you home office.

This is a great printer! I’m not sure I like that you have to join HP to keep track of supplies. I(t also takes longer to scan, since I have to go thru signing into a portal.

One pass duplex scanning is a nice feature.

For small scale multi function machines, this thing appears to cover all the bases. Scans relatively fast, copies, prints, and faxes. Able to set up network scanning to a server rather easily via networked computer. Much better way of inputting data than directly from the tiny on-machine screen. It also double-side scans in one pass, which is huge for speed and for mitigating jam risk.

Two drawbacks so far though–the scanner paper feeder tray has developed a lop-sided paper pull. Every scan is about 3 to 5 degrees crooked to the same side. This machine is about a month old. Kind of disappointing. Second drawback is that while interfacing with the machine via a computer is easier, I don’t actually see ways of completing this via the machine itself. This means if you didn’t already create a job profile, you’re out of luck at the machine itself. Lastly, legal paper size is the largest for scanning and printing. Didn’t realize that when buying, so I thought I’d point it out here. That one is on me.

The product ink cartridge was installed incorrectly at the factory costing me time, money and aggravation. Customer support is a run around.

Just doesn't seem like HP tested the product before releasing

I really wanted a double sided scanner, and have tried hard to make this product work.

When scanning/copying multiple sheets, the scanner ALWAYS grabs multiple sheets at once. I’ve tried feathering etc but rarely works. I have a single sided HP scanner from 10 years ago that rarely had this problem.

When scanning to a network drive, the printer/scanner fails 3 out of 4 times, returning an error saying can’t connect. Then it will work. Again the older HP scanner that never has this problem.

I tried HP support and was on the phone with them for hours but they were of no help. I really wish they could solve my problems. If you care about about the sheet feeder or scanning to a network drive, buyer beware. I expected better from HP.
