However, a few drawbacks such as the lack of wireless connectivity and issues with its sleep mode have been pointed out by some users.

Overall, the printer is highly regarded for its print quality and speed, producing clear, professional-looking documents. It handles high volumes well, and many users appreciate its economical toner usage. Despite its limitations, users find the HP LaserJet Pro 4001n to be a solid, reliable choice for black-and-white printing.

PROS

  • Fast Printing Speed: The printer can churn out up to 42 pages per minute, making it one of the faster models on the market. A user mentioned, “I printed a 12-page document in the time it usually takes to print one page on my inkjet printer”.

  • High Print Quality: Customers frequently comment on the crisp, clear quality of the prints, even for detailed documents like graphs and small text. One reviewer stated, “Even with small text and detailed graphs, the print quality was second to none”.

  • Reliable Performance: Users appreciate the printer’s ability to handle large print jobs without issue. It’s particularly suited for offices that require heavy-duty black-and-white printing. One reviewer said, “This printer effortlessly handles our workload, printing 30 pages per client”.

  • Cost-Effective Toner Usage: Unlike inkjet printers, this model is more economical, especially for those printing high volumes. One user noted that the toner lasts much longer than expected.

CONS

  • Sleep Mode Issues: Some users report that the sleep mode causes problems, as the printer sometimes doesn’t wake up without a restart. This has been particularly frustrating for office users, with one customer calling it a “total waste of money and time” due to sleep mode failures.

  • No Built-In Scanner: While the printer excels at what it does, some users were disappointed by the lack of a built-in scanner, which could have made it a more versatile office machine.

  • Noise Level: Some users have pointed out that the printer is noisier than expected, especially in quiet office settings. A user noted, “It works fine but is a bit loud for a home office”.

  • Limited Connectivity Options: Several users were disappointed by the absence of a USB or Ethernet cable in the package, which led to additional purchases.

HP claims, “Easy Set Up” which was completely false! It specialized technicians 3 days to hook this little printer up! And the lights still blink!

The printer itself works really well, prints cleanly and efficiently. It’s too bad it’s so difficult to get started.

If it's not broke don't fix it.

I know this printer like the back of my hand. Why? because I’ve been installing this printer’s predecessors for decades. Over the years they’ve updated the electronics (the speed in particular) but they’ve kept the same basic form factor. Even the menus are about the same. The speed on the original 4000n was 17 pages per minute and the default resolution was 600×600 but 1200×1200 was available. Today the resolution is 1200×1200 but the speed is now 42 pages a minute.

Setup of this printer is very easy. I connected it to my network with an RJ45 patch cable, made sure the toner cartridge was loaded properly and then loaded some paper. I made sure using the display on the printer that it was connected to the network and I printed out a network configuration report. Then on the computer I went to hpsmart.com/setup and followed the instructions. It only takes a few minutes and it will install the drivers for you. It’s fast and easy.

This printer is a solid choice for small office workgroups (up to 10 people) The main paper tray can hold about 2+ reams of paper and the standard toner cartridge lasts for about 2900 pages while the high yield cartridge lasts for about 9000 pages.

Why choose this laser printer? It’s a workhorse. The design is tried and true and a version of this printer’s been in use since before the turn of the century. What don’t I like about this printer? I think HP should have included the wireless networking with the n (network) version of the printer rather the dwn version or just eliminate the n version and let the dwn version be the basic network entry point. For a basic workgroup printer I don’t think you can do better than this one.

Great stable printer

I am a big fan of HP printers. They always seem to function straight out of the box and are easy to install. This printer is no exception. Quick reliable printing that just works. The downside, printers have not changed designs for MANY years and are kind of antiquated tech that is way past due for an update. The sleep mode serves almost no purpose and has actually caused more issues with the printer not responding and requiring a power cycle to reconnect with the computer.

Great printer, but HP will tie you down!!

HP used to, and still does, make great printers. However, the software you’re forced to use is heavy and unreliable. Do not get sucked up into Instant Ink without knowing what you are signing up for! If you sign up and cancel your subscription, the cloud will DISABLE YOUR PRINTER AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PRINT. You must purchase an official ink cartridge from HP that is not from Instant Ink and then reset your printer. Read: THE CLOUD CAN DISABLE YOUR PRINTER. You will not be able to use any cartridge that you got from Instant Ink. This made me unbelievably mad. They say printer companies make all their money from the supplies, and HP just made it so you almost have to pay for a subscription. The hardware so far has been great, and I’ve never had a jam. But, had I known about Instant Ink and what they can do, I would have gone with another company.

Terrible instructions and set up

I received this item for free as part of the Amazon Vine program, in exchange for an unbiased review. I don’t always point that out when I’m reviewing free items, but here it’s relevant because it explains why I did not look more closely at the item description before ordering it.
When I got it out to set up, I actually followed the instructions. That was a mistake. The second step (see picture) shows how to set up using wifi vs ethernet, with no indication that this printer lacks wifi. All of the set up software that it says to use (for phone or computer) also walks you through setting it up via wifi or otherwise wirelessly. I struggled with that for about a half hour before giving up and just plugging it in, and lo and behold it worked instantly.
Moral of the story: I should have just plugged in the ethernet cable and ignored all of the ‘instructions’ provided. Since I did that, it’s been working flawlessly.
I only took one star off, since it was at least partly my fault for not paying attention to the specifications. But still, terrible, terrible set up instructions and software. Just skip those and plug it in (USB or ethernet) and connect it via your operating system’s ‘add printer’ function.

A Workhorse - replacing my 20 year old HP

It’s just like my 20 year old HP laser printer – works just as well and will probably be the last printer I have to buy – no problems setting up

A fast, reasonably compact B&W laser printer

Jim Barber

This is a fast (about 7 seconds to print the first page, up to 40+ pages per minute after that), sharp-printing black-and-white laser printer from HP. It’s reasonably small — about 15″ x 14″ x 8″ — so it doesn’t take up much room on your desktop if space is at a premium.

Connection of the printer to your computer can be done either by USB or Ethernet. The cables aren’t included, so you’ll need to buy a cable if you don’t have one lying around. Other than that, the printer comes with everything you need to start printing (except paper, of course).

One thing you need to be careful of — although the product description says that a special feature of this LaserJet Pro 4001n is that it’s “wireless”, *it doesn’t have a Wi-Fi connection*. In order to print wirelessly from a remote device (like your phone), you need to use the HP Smart app, which then gets to the printer via the Internet. So the LaserJet Pro 4001n does technically support wireless printing, but the printer itself isn’t free of wires — it still needs to be connected (by USB or Ethernet) either to the Internet or directly to your computer. (This is probably obvious to techie types, but someone who isn’t that tech savvy could get confused by HP’s use of the term “wireless”.)

FYI, I installed my printer on a home-office, Windows 11 desktop using a USB connection, and had no problems at all. The whole installation process took less than 10 minutes.

For fast printing of large quantities of black-and-white printed materials, this is a good laser printer at a reasonable price. Just be sure not to confuse “wireless” with “wi-fi”.

Windows 10 won’t allow the download of the software and print drivers. When speaking to the HP person, she had no solution other than to call Microsoft. So much for the EASY installation. Very disappointing.
