However, some users mention a learning curve for beginners, especially with the grinder settings and milk frothing techniques.

Customer Reviews Summary

The Philips PSA3218-01 Espresso Machine has received widespread praise for its high-quality espresso, elegant design, and customizable brewing options. Many users appreciate the 58mm portafilter, which allows for even water distribution and rich crema. The metal conical burr grinder with 15 grind settings ensures flexibility in achieving the perfect coffee consistency.

Users highlight the large water reservoir as a major convenience, allowing them to go days without refilling. The PID temperature control ensures consistent brewing temperatures, while the powerful steam wand and included milk jug with temperature indicators make latte and cappuccino preparation effortless.

However, a recurring concern among users is the messiness of the grinder, with some reporting that coffee grounds scatter during grinding. Additionally, some beginners find the instruction manual lacking, requiring them to rely on online tutorials to fully understand the setup and brewing process. Once past the learning curve, most users find the Philips PSA3218-01 an excellent home espresso machine.

Such a great at home machine!!!

I love how easy this is to use + that the grinder is built in! Such a great price compared to other at home machines and compact so it doesn’t take up so much space on your counter. It’s really easy to clean and and only make noise when it’s grinding the beans, other wise it’s not that loud.

Elevate Your Home Espresso Game

I can state with confidence that the Philips Barista Brew Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine is a fantastic choice for both novice and seasoned home baristas who wish to create espresso beverages of café quality at home after using it for a while.

The Barista Brew has a brushed stainless steel finish that is both elegant and resistant to fingerprints, keeping it looking polished and clean. It feels strong and long-lasting, suggesting that it is well-made.

A standout feature is the large 2.3-liter (77.8 oz) water tank, allowing multiple drinks before needing a refill. The tank is easy to remove with a convenient handle, though putting it back when full can be a bit tricky I don’t remove the tank as I have good amount of space between kitchen cabinets and this machine I directly pour water from a bottle.

Despite its many features, the Barista Brew is easy to use. The control panel has clearly labeled buttons for power, grind settings, and drink options (single shot, double shot, and Americano). It also offers hidden programming options, like adjustable brew temperature and shot volume, accessed through a specific button sequence all are explained in detail within the included user guide.

You can fine-tune the grind size with the 15 changeable settings on the built-in conical burr grinder. Choose the finer option to obtain a beautiful shot of espresso, even though some people think the adjustments could be more exact. It’s still a handy function that removes the need for a separate grinder.

The Barista Brew excels at espresso extraction. Its 15-bar pump and 58mm stainless steel portafilter consistently produce rich, crema-topped shots, rivaling those from cafes. The machine also has automatic pre-infusion and adjustable brew temperature for optimal flavor extraction.

I appreciate its ability to deliver high quality espresso with consistent temperature stability and rich crema. It comes with both pressurized and non-pressurized filter baskets, providing flexibility for anyone at different skill levels.

The machine includes a steam wand for milk frothing, which may take beginners some practice to perfect. However, with patience, you can create silky, well textured foam for lattes and cappuccinos. It also comes with a temperature sensitive milk jug, which helps ensure the perfect milk temperature.

Cleaning the Barista Brew is relatively easy. It includes accessories like cleaning brushes and a pin for maintenance, it’s very simple to keep in good condition for a very long time with very little effort.

In terms of both features and performance, the Philips Barista Brew is an excellent value. Compared to competitors that retail for more, it is more reasonably priced and has comparable features.

To update your home coffee setup, the Philips Barista Brew Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine is a great option. Both novices and experts may use it because of its intuitive UI, adaptable settings, and superb espresso quality. The machine has several shortcomings, but they pale in comparison to its total advantages. The steam wand requires practice, and the grinder might not be enough for the pickiest coffee lovers. The Philips Barista Brew is a good option if you’re searching for a dependable, feature-rich semi-automatic espresso maker that produces results comparable to those of a café.

I like this espresso machine

I like this machine much more than breville. Breville was more loud, and it wasting a lot of water. This one good however grinder is a fail. It shoots down the ground coffee so fast that it bounces to counter no matter what I tried. I even bought deeper dosing cup and it didn’t stop it. One more thing needs improvement is that not easy to see water level. Because of grinder’s bouncing issue I am thinking to return this machine. Because having this bigger machine and a separate grinder doesn’t make sense.

Update: I researched about the coffee bouncing: It turns out it is the static and it turns out it happens to any grinder. There are solutions you can do, something like spraying water to your beans. It is strange that it never happened to me before. But, I am keeping the machine. I was already happy with everuthing else.

Its sleek and modern design blends well with any kitchen, and its user-friendly interface makes it suitable for both novice and experienced espresso enthusiasts. The semi-automatic functionality offers flexibility, allowing you to control the brewing process while still benefiting from the machine’s efficiency.

One of the standout features is the consistent extraction quality, ensuring a rich and flavorful espresso shot every time. Don’t Buy! Failed within days – Tried with 2 different machines.

When it worked it was lovely. The first one, bought on Prime Day, failed to reach pressure, bypassed the filter basket, and sent water out the americano tube about 8 days after first use. Philips tech support knew less about the machine than we did. We are past baristas and liked the function of the machine so we opted to pay more and try again with a second machine. The second one worked for two days and then the steam wand failed to have pressure – just a dribble of water. Thankfully Amazon’s return policy allowed us not to be out $$$ for an item that fails so quickly. I cannot recommend this machine – it appears to have a design flaw. We will be trying with another brand.

A First Class Machine!

Here’s what I like about this machine: #1 It’s very compact considering all the functionality, #2 Well designed and high quality, #3 Brews a great latte , #4 The portafilter has a pad that catches the sink edge for support when you tamp the ground coffee with the calibrated tamper, #5 It was easy for me as a first timer to learn to use , #6 the milk jug has a built in thermometer than allows lets you know the milk temperature as you froth the milk for a consistent result.

I highly recommend this machine!

A few months in …

I’ve had this machine a few months. It’s my first big girl espresso machine where I have to press the puck and watch the pressure gauge. It can be tricky but I figured it out after a few days and some TikTok research on how to make pressure.

Keep in mind I am no barista nor fussy coffee drinker.

Pros: absolutely love the americano feature. I use this 90% of the time! Large water tank. Automatic grinder. User friendly for new people trying to get their foot in the door. Husband enjoys frother.

Cons: coffee grinder sprays grounds all over. The floor, the counter, behind the fridge… you’ll find them where you least expect it. Excess water discharge when the contraption de-pressurizes. Now, I don’t know much about how it works, but after completing a pull, about 1/3 cup water drains out of the system into the discharge catch tray. I buy distilled so it is annoying how much the machine wastes but this might be normal for every espresso maker? No clue.

Buy it on sale, don’t pay full price.

better than starbucks

I hated going to buy coffee but didn’t have a choice before if I wanted it. I like the frozen or iced coffee and shakes with espresso shots in them so every time its like 10ish bucks for a coffee. It’s crazy. I got this espresso to save me money in the long run (theres 3 of us so 10ish bucks a pop adds up quick). As I never had a espresso machine before I was pleasantly surprised that it tastes better than places I’ve gone before. Getting to put in as much or as little of the sugar/cream/flavor really helps.
It’s pretty easy to use but remember that the portafilter for this one is 58mm so if you buy a tamp box or distributor you need to know the number. I really love it. This is my first one so I can’t compare it to a different one sadly but so far I can’t find anything wrong with it. I really like that is grinds the beans and everything.

Steam pump broke

We loved the machine. We had just thrown out a fully automatic $2600 Breville that only lasted for 2 years and thought we should go back to a more basic machine. It took a little time to get it down, pressure, etc. but it made great cappuccinos for about 3 weeks then the steam pump for frothing milk stopped functioning. We did trouble shooting, i.e., cleaning the machine and wand, let it rest for 24 hours but, the next morning it was still not working.
I guess the appliance gods are telling us to go back to coffee.
