The product is highly praised for its exceptional picture quality, vibrant color accuracy, and overall value for money. Many users highlight the impressive sharpness and detail that the projector delivers, especially in a properly darkened room, which enhances the viewing experience. The projector’s 4K resolution and HDR capabilities make it a standout choice for home theaters, offering a cinematic experience at a competitive price point.

However, some customers have pointed out a few drawbacks, such as the noise from the lens and dynamic iris, and issues with light leakage. Despite these concerns, the majority of users are satisfied with their purchase, finding the performance and features of the HT5550 to be excellent, particularly given its price range. The projector has been commended for being user-friendly, with easy installation and setup, making it accessible even to those new to home theater setups.

PROS

  • Exceptional Picture Quality: The projector delivers sharp and clear 4K images, with excellent color accuracy and contrast. A user mentioned, “The picture looks great. I love the built-in sharpening and how good it makes my collection of 1080p blu-rays look.”

  • Cinematic Experience: Many reviewers note the projector’s ability to create a true home theater experience, especially in a light-controlled environment. “Unbelievable picture quality,” one user stated, emphasizing the impressive visuals.

  • Easy Installation: The HT5550 is praised for its straightforward setup process, with features like lens shift making it easy to install. “Easy to install, vertical and horizontal shift make it super simple,” commented a satisfied customer.

  • Value for Money: Despite being a premium product, many users find the HT5550 to offer excellent value. “Definitely the best projector under 3000 dollars,” remarked one reviewer, highlighting its affordability relative to its features.

  • Low Noise Levels: Several users appreciate the quiet operation of the cooling fans, which does not detract from the viewing experience. One reviewer noted, “Whisper quiet, I mean I have this thing set up right behind me and I don’t hear it.”

CONS

  • Lens and Iris Noise: Some users have reported that the projector makes noticeable noise when the lens or dynamic iris adjusts. A review mentioned, “The projector makes low-frequency noises when the screen image changes brightness and color.”

  • Light Leakage Issues: There are complaints about light leakage, which can be distracting in a dark room. “This projector has a great picture, but they seem to have missed a major requirement. Which is keeping all the light on the screen,” a user pointed out.

  • Not Ideal for Bright Rooms: The projector’s performance diminishes in well-lit environments, making it best suited for darkened rooms. “Best to use in a dark room or dedicated theater,” advised one reviewer.

  • Focus Uniformity Issues: A few customers reported problems with focus uniformity, which can affect the overall image quality. “Major focus uniformity issues, which seem to be a very common problem with this model,” noted one reviewer.

Who Should Buy?

The BenQ CinePrime HT5550 is ideal for home theater enthusiasts who prioritize picture quality and color accuracy. It is perfect for those who can control the lighting in their viewing environment, as the projector performs best in dark rooms. If you’re looking for a high-quality, cinematic experience without breaking the bank, this projector offers excellent value. Additionally, users who appreciate a straightforward setup and quiet operation will find the HT5550 a fitting choice. However, those with bright viewing spaces or sensitivity to projector noise may want to consider these factors before purchasing.

BenQ Referbished.

Half of the picture looked GREAT! The left half had white vertical bars. They showed up even without any input to projector. I googled it and found the DLP chip was failing. This was FACTORY REFERBISHED. Not sure how they could miss these lines. I have only had one other BenQ monitor for gaming 144hz. After a year it started flickering. I still use it but it’s annoying. I will probably buy this same projector again (NEW) in a few months because it has the HUGE adjustment range for mounting. With white lines it was tough to get a full sense of how great the image could be… Not so happy with BenQ…

Great buy

Great quality projector. I had a 82” 4K tv in my media room and after seeing my brother in laws BenQ 4K I knew I had to get one. I am amazed at the picture coming from this projector. You will not be disappointed! Packaged well.

Control your Light BenQ!

Ordered one of these for my dedicated theater room. Noticed a ton of light off screen, on the wall and floor. This projector has a great picture, but they seem to have missed a major requirement. Which is keeping all the light on the screen. This is worse than light bleed. BenQ engineer said that this was an “inherent defect” with the product. They won’t address the issue because most people don’t have a light controlled / dedicated theater space. If you have one, steer clear of this product.

The return process was a nightmare. It took forever to get this taken care of. Bought this December 15th and still haven’t received my reimbursement. I had to eat the tax as well because I was outside of my amazon return window, because BenQ is slow at RMA / troubleshooting. The support engineer was very helpful and great. BenQ just needs more of them. They are running on a skeleton crew, and they all know me by first name now.

It’s an amazing projector! WOW

The HT5550 doesn’t just meet cinema quality it surpasses it. I’ve never seen anything like it. I paired mine up with a Panasonic UB820 and it’s above and beyond my expectations. Also has the best 3D I’ve ever seen. Go for it, I highly suggest it. Enjoy!

Buy it! It’s awesome

This new BenQ HT5550 is outstanding. I never thought I would see the level of color from a projector like this projector produces. Holy cow, it’s stunning. The 3D is also a nice touch which happens to be the best 3D I’ve ever seen. This baby is worth every penny spent. Buy it, you won’t be sorry!!

noisy lens

picture looks good, however when the screen image changes brightness and color the projector makes low freq. noises. The air vents also leak light so if your planning on a ceiling mount in a dark room it is distracting.

BenQ scores with the HT5550!

Excellent projector! Far superior than the Epson 5050 which many people compare this to. Whisper quiet, I mean I have this thing setup right behind me and I don’t hear it. I sometimes think the fans aren’t on, its so quiet. The picture is unbelievable, sharp .No screen door effect and I dont see any rainbows…the colors are rich and vibrant. Definitely get it when you can as the popularity of this model makes it hard to find.

AMAZING SELLER AND PRODUCT! WOW!!!

I was on the fence on purchasing this projector. The cheaper Benq seemed to suit my needs. After a bit of research, my distance throw all led to the BenQ 5550. WOW! Every positive review was right! Boom, right out of the box, amazing image! I have several tv’s and even OLEDs, so image quality is critical. While a projector will never match an OLED or QLED, etc.. This is a stunning image! You NEED a dark room to get the most out of this unit (or most projectors). My image is about 180 foot on a medium beige wall. I didn’t buy a screen (yet) to see the quality. A few minor tweaks (not necessary, just being a nerd) and On my fourth day of watching, I find myself pausing in my head, while watching and going “wow.. look at that crisp, clear, colorful image”. I make and edit my own music videos (I’m a musician) and use Final Cut Pro to edit. I’m impressed! One thing that is extremely helpful,… I have SEVERAL streaming boxes. Apple TV 4K, Nvidia Shield, Roku, etc. I’m a gear nerd. I seek out the best. So a little research led me to this, if you are purchasing any 4K projector. 1-your HDMI cables are CRITICAL if you want a great image! Yes, a “regular” HDMI should work, buy would you buy an expensive car, and spray pant the finish yourself? No. Same here. You don’t have to go to Bestbuy and spend $300 on fancy HDMI cables. BUT I STRONGLY suggest you look on Amazon for OPTICAL HDMI cables for your projector run. Totally worth the extra $20-$40 for a perfect image. 2- If you are using an Apple 4K Tv box, search on YouTube for “ Best settings for 4K Apple TV for Projectors”. This was CRITICAL in producing the correct image. Now, I’m sure you say you’re getting a 4K image from your streaming box, but I was shocked to see that you turn OFF HDR, and turn on OTHET settings to get full HDR images. Sounds crazy, but watch the video(s). You can apply this to other boxes as well. Now THE SELLER… when you buy a large purchase on Amazon unseen, you feel protected. They have your back. I’m not rich, so I went for a slightly used (demo) unit, with full warranty and 6 hrs on the bulb. The unit arrived 4 days early. Impressive! When I opened the box, there was a note inside from the seller. Of course you get a little nervous when you see this. The seller kindly explained that the used demo unit that I bought was actually sold the same day that I purchased mine. So, he kindly went into inventory, and gave me a brand NEW projector for the same used price! That’s a difference of $400 or more! I was completely blown away by this. He did not have to do that, could’ve simply said my unit was unavailable and refunded me my money. Wow… Wow… Wow! David the owner of Staunton Home Theatre (Amazon authorized reseller) is AWESOME and AMAZING. Thank you for caring about your business and customers. I immediately message him with a thank you note for his kindness and he spent the time to send me a response again thanking me for my note. It’s the kind of stuff you don’t see these days it makes you feel more and more secure using Amazon and it’s resellers when it comes to buying certain items. So… If you’re on the fence about purchasing this item, and I know it’s a larger ticket item from many people, just go ahead and buy it. You can always send it back (sometimes for a small restocking fee) if you don’t like it. One thing I would be very cautious of is your “throw distance“. I have an extremely large living room so this HT–5550 works in my situation. If your throat distance or back wall of your living room or home theater is less than maybe 10 or 12 feet, then I would look at the BenQ HT-3550 that is 90% identical to this larger unit, but specifically designed for a smaller throat distance to get you a larger screen. Basically the insides of these two projectors are mostly the same. There were a few minor upgrades in the larger unit and an updated lens system but, unless you are a super image geek you probably will not notice the difference. Either way, if you’re reading all these reviews, you will realize that the BenQ projectors are the absolute best in class for images. Buy it… You probably won’t return it once you see the image. Hope all this helps there a plenty other reviews with all the technical stuff which I could’ve put here but would be redundant. Chris, clear, amazing quality 4K imaging.…! Hope all this helps!

Best for such price

This is a real plug and play projector, just connect your devices and it will display a perfect picture. Looks impressive without being bulky, very high quality picture without very high tag price. All in one, HD, 4K and 3D.
