Customer Reviews Summary

Breville Bambino Espresso Machine (Model BES450BSS1BUS1) is acclaimed by coffee enthusiasts for its powerful performance in a compact design. Users love the rapid heat-up time, often highlighting that it’s ready to brew espresso within seconds, making it a perfect addition to busy morning routines. Reviews emphasize the machine’s ability to produce rich crema and smooth espresso, significantly superior to entry-level brands. The included milk frother receives special praise for creating café-quality frothed milk for lattes and cappuccinos.

On usability, users frequently mentioned the easy-to-understand controls and intuitive operation, particularly suitable for beginners. Its compact footprint makes it an ideal choice for smaller kitchens or limited counter spaces. However, the absence of a dedicated on/off switch is often cited as inconvenient, requiring users to press two buttons simultaneously, which some find unintuitive.

Overall, satisfaction rates are high, but consistency issues exist, particularly regarding machine durability. Some customers experienced problems such as water tank leaks or mechanical failures within the first year of use. Despite these setbacks, most users still regard it as a worthwhile investment, thanks to Breville’s responsive customer support and warranty coverage.

❌ What Are the Disadvantages of This Product?

  • No Dedicated On/Off Button: Users find the absence of a straightforward power button frustrating, requiring pressing two buttons simultaneously to power off. This unconventional method led some users to initially believe their unit was defective.
  • Durability Concerns: The most common issue mentioned is the water tank’s tendency to leak after prolonged usage. A disappointed user reported, “The water tank in the back constantly leaks,” suggesting a need for improved build quality in future models.
  • Limited Temperature Control: Espresso enthusiasts note the inability to manually control brewing temperature, which could limit the espresso’s customizability and quality. One user explained, “To make good espresso, you need at least 190°F, and this machine initially pulls shots at about 150°F.”

🔄 How Has This Product Improved?

Users upgrading from older Breville models like the BES840XL note significant enhancements in heat-up speed and compactness. Many highlighted the Bambino’s improved milk steaming capability, describing it as faster and creating superior foam compared to older machines.

Breville Bambino Espresso Machine Changed My Coffee Game

I swore by drip filter coffee for years, but I finally caved and ordered this for a personal gift. Let’s just say, I didn’t know what I was missing out on. The bambino is well reviewed online, and for good reason. Right out of the box, I was impressed by how easy it was to set up. The Breville Bambino comes with a fantastic 3D interactive setup guide through the Tilt app. This app made everything so straightforward—no confusing manuals or trial and error! Just a few taps on my phone, and I was ready to start brewing like a pro.

Here’s a pithy list of pros and cons.

Pros:
Quick Heat-Up: The machine is ready to brew in just 3 seconds. Now I can enjoy my espresso almost instantly, which is a lifesaver on busy mornings
Compact Design: The Bambino’s small footprint fits perfectly on our small apartment counter without taking up too much space—ideal for cramped living situations
Barista-Quality Microfoam: The steam wand is powerful enough to create that velvety microfoam we all love for lattes and cappuccinos. I’m not great at the art stuff, but its fun to test it out.
User-Friendly: Even if you’re new to espresso-making, this machine is super intuitive and easy to use.

Cons:
No Built-in Grinder: You’ll need to invest in a separate grinder if you want fresh coffee beans, which can be an extra expense.
Lightweight Materials: Some parts feel a bit less sturdy than I expected, but they still perform well. The tamper is plastic, so feels kinda cheap, but it has held up.
Small Drip Tray: It fills up quickly, so be prepared to empty it more often than you might like.

TLDR: Great machine, lives up the hype, some plastic / cheaper components, but they appear to work well.

Takes time to get the hang of it

The first few days were terrible and I wasted a half bag of good coffee trying to find my technique. I suggest you practice with the grocery store beans you already have laying around although that’s bound to taste terrible so it’s almost like you have to practice with fresh beans. Bottom line is don’t practice with your best stuff, save that for once you have your process down.

Don’t be discouraged if your first week with the machine is awful because in time you’ll figure it out. There really is no one formula. Grind size, dose, and extraction time are really the three variables you will juggle and adjust until you find the balance you’re looking for. Once you figure out your process you’re going to be proud of yourself.

I am using a Normcore 54mm Bottomless Portafilter which was pricey but I bit the bullet.

Cheap plastic no power

I owned a Breville for 8 years and never had a problem, so when I needed a new espresso machine I went straight to the Brivelle machines and purchased this model. I have to say I have never been so disappointed in a purchase as I have with this. There is no weight to it so you have to bear hug the machine just to load the coffee, once you finally get it loaded the water drips through due to a lack of pressure. I have tried so many grinds to see if they were too fine but the grind needed for water to push through course and which made for very weak coffee.

I wish i bought this earlier, huge money saver

If you buy coffee every day this is a must have!! it’s really easy to set up, use it, and clean it! Definitely watch a lot of videos online of how to use it and about espresso, there are a lot of really important things you need to understand or else this isn’t going to go well for you. My tips are purge the water after any use of the steam wand to clean it, just hit the water button and let it run for a few seconds, use dark roast coffee for the most crema (the fluffy tan colored stuff on top, if you see a lot of this then you did it right) pre ground coffee is okay if you buy a nice brand of dark roast and keep it sealed tightly, make sure to use the double walled basket for the best flavor. Buy a knock box for easy clean up of espresso grinds. Game changing. Plant milks work better if you buy the full fat or barista kind, use 2% milk if you drink dairy milk, tamp your espresso properly or else the machine will drip for too short or too long of a time, apply about 20 lbs of pressure but i do 10 because i’m weak and it still works, and my machine came with a frothing cup so you don’t need to buy one. I also recommend buying some flavored coffee syrups and sauces. Just watch some videos on how to make everything. It tastes sooooo good. Highly recommend buying this! Most bad reviews i think are from people not knowing basic espresso knowledge like i explained above

Disappointment…

The machine worked perfectly for just over a month. However, now when I press the steam function button, a high-frequency sound (as shown in the video) starts—it sounds like something might explode. I’ve always trusted Breville products, but this one has been a disappointment. Living overseas, I’m unable to return it for a replacement.

Best purchase ever

I am a huge coffee person. I’m not a coffee snob but I do enjoy good coffee. I tend towards (oat)milk drinks so I haven’t tried the espresso by itself since I don’t have much to compare it to anyways.

I am extremely happy with this machine. It’s fast, it’s easy, it comes with everything you need to get started right away. There are some things you can do that will have a huge impact on the quality of your drink. But you can start with what you have and work your way up based on your comfort level.

It heats up faster than I can prepare the puck. The switch between steaming and brewing is quick and feels seem less. The speed and not waiting 30 minutes to heat up has me spoiled.

It comes with a plastic tamper and a nice milk frothing pitcher.

It has dual walled filter baskets to artificially create the pressure needed if you are using pre ground coffee or a grinder that doesn’t grind fine enough. As long as the coffee is fresh you should get espresso that will make a good latte.

It also comes with just the standard filter baskets which is ideal for when you are grinding your own coffee beans. You get more control over the end result.

Since buying this I have stopped going to coffee shops and I genuinely look forward to making my latte. I’m offering to make anyone and everyone a latte because I enjoy it so much. I’ve even been using the steam wand for hot chocolate.

The only danger in this purchase is remembering that moderation is key. Too much caffeine is bad. I once drank 5 double shot lattes in one day because I was having fun. Don’t be me. Maybe invite people over for a coffee party.

Don’t waste your money on Breville!

This is the most unreliable coffee maker brand! Save your money and invest in something better. I bought this machine about six months ago, and after roughly 200 uses, it required descaling to function again. We followed the instructions exactly, but after that, it never produced crema again. At this point, I might as well just boil water and use instant coffee—the result would be the same, except this machine costs over $300.

Frustrated, we reached out to Breville, who asked us to send it in for repairs. After waiting, they returned it, claiming it was fixed. Guess what? Nothing changed—it’s still the same. What kind of service is that?

Do yourself a favor and go with a more reliable brand that actually stands behind its products. If I don’t update this post, it means Breville never bothered to make this right.

Water tank leaks

We have always loved Breville products and had replaced our old espresso maker (of 8 years). This one worked great at first, then began the water tank began to leak water slowly. 6 months later, we now have it wrapped with duct tape, just to slow the leak down to be able to use the coffee maker. For $320, this should not be an issue! So disappointed!
