Customer Reviews Summary

The Brother HL-L2400D Compact Monochrome Laser Printer is a well-regarded choice for home and small office users who prioritize efficiency and affordability. Customers consistently highlight its fast printing speed, ease of use, and reliable performance for black-and-white printing needs. Many users commend its compact size and straightforward setup, making it an ideal addition to small spaces. The inclusion of automatic duplex printing is another highly valued feature, as it saves paper and reduces manual intervention. For those who print regularly but don’t require advanced features, this printer meets expectations exceptionally well.

However, the printer’s lack of wireless connectivity and the omission of a USB cable in the package have drawn criticism. While the printer supports USB 2.0 connections, the need to purchase a separate cable is seen as an inconvenience by many. Mac users have noted compatibility issues, which may require workarounds or alternative drivers to achieve functionality. Additionally, users who require envelope printing might encounter problems unless they adjust specific settings. Despite these drawbacks, the HL-L2400D’s affordability, durability, and print quality make it a popular choice for those with basic monochrome printing needs. Overall, it stands out as a cost-effective solution for everyday printing.

PROS

  • Fast Printing Speed: The printer offers speeds of up to 32 pages per minute, allowing users to handle large printing tasks efficiently. “The pages print quite fast, averaging approximately a page in 3 seconds,” noted a user. This speed makes it a great option for high-volume document printing in both home and office settings.
  • Compact and Space-Saving: Its small footprint makes it suitable for home offices and limited spaces. “This printer fits perfectly in my office; it’s very compact and printing is smooth,” shared a customer. Its design ensures it can be easily accommodated in tight spaces without compromising functionality.
  • Automatic Duplex Printing: The ability to print on both sides of the paper without manual intervention saves time and reduces paper usage. “I love that it does double-sided printing!” exclaimed a reviewer. This feature is particularly appreciated by users aiming to reduce waste and create professional-looking documents efficiently.
  • Cost-Effective Printing: Toner cartridges last longer and are more economical compared to inkjet cartridges. One user highlighted, “The toner lasts longer, and the cartridges are cheaper than my last printer.” With options for standard and XL cartridges, users can choose what fits their needs best while keeping long-term costs manageable.
  • Straightforward Setup: Many customers praised the simple setup process. “Setup was easy, and it printed right out of the box,” mentioned a satisfied buyer. This ease of use extends to driver installation and basic troubleshooting, making it accessible even for less tech-savvy individuals.

CONS

  • No Wireless Connectivity: The lack of Wi-Fi or Ethernet options limits the printer to a single USB connection. “How much more does it cost to include Wi-Fi? Another $10?” a frustrated user questioned. This limitation makes it less versatile for households or offices with multiple devices.
  • No USB Cable Included: Customers were disappointed that the required USB 2.0 type A/B cable was not part of the package. “You’ll need to buy a USB 2.0 type A/B cable,” noted a reviewer. This oversight can delay initial setup and adds an extra expense for users.
  • Compatibility Issues with Mac: Several Mac users reported challenges in finding compatible drivers or achieving full functionality. “The printer isn’t compatible with macOS Sonoma/14.x,” one user explained. This has led some to recommend alternative models for seamless Mac integration.
  • Envelope Printing Concerns: Some users experienced issues with envelopes wrinkling during printing. “Envelopes being too hot and mangled was a problem,” mentioned a reviewer. Adjusting the printer’s back panel settings can mitigate this, but it remains an inconvenience for some.
  • No Multifunction Features: As a basic printer, it lacks scanning, copying, or faxing capabilities. “This is not a multi-function printer, so don’t expect extras,” a user pointed out. This makes it less suitable for users needing all-in-one solutions for their home or office.

Who Should Buy?

The Brother HL-L2400D is ideal for users seeking a reliable, high-quality monochrome laser printer for basic printing tasks. It’s particularly well-suited for home offices, small businesses, and students who need fast, consistent printing without the complexities of wireless setup. Those who prefer a cost-effective solution for frequent printing will appreciate its long-lasting toner and economical operation. Additionally, users who value straightforward, no-frills functionality will find this printer to be an excellent fit. However, individuals reliant on wireless connectivity or using Mac systems should consider these limitations before purchasing.

Do Users Recommend This Product?

Overall, users recommend the Brother HL-L2400D for its affordability, speed, and reliability. Many highlight its suitability for everyday printing tasks and its impressive print quality. However, the lack of wireless connectivity and compatibility issues with Mac systems have deterred some potential buyers. For those who can work around these drawbacks, this printer offers excellent value for its price and features. Users seeking an economical and efficient printing solution for black-and-white documents will likely find this model to be a dependable choice.

Not mac compatible (in 2024 this is still an issue)

Bought this for my mother to replace her inkjet. Set up link in instructions doesn’t work. Go to website. They have a driver for Windows and Linux but not MacOS. Airprint? Not supported for this printer. Generic drivers don’t work either, naturally. Brother printer utility installs but won’t work.

This is important information which is not in the product description. Why is it after decades these devices are always a headache.

Brother – maybe instead of making 300 models of the same printer, make one which works really well. And work on your pathetic software as well.

Love the easy set up and works well

This printer immediately started working after connecting the printer USB cord, which you do have to buy separate, and then the power plug which was included. I saw another review that it did not print envelopes well, and I had the same experience with the envelopes being too hot and mangled, but I found a video that shows you are supposed to open the back of the machine and the envelope goes out the back not the top, and then the envelope does not overheat and wrinkle . I would have given it five stars but I do find it an inconvenience to pull my printer out from the small space it is in just to print envelopes, but that is how the machine is designed. If you have ample room to open the back of the machine, this will not be an inconvenience for you or if you don’t print envelopes. Otherwise , I love the simplicity and the performance of the printer.

Great Printer

I am not tech savvy at all, but apparently smart enough to set up this printer. After finally figuring out where the toner drum and toner go, the rest of the setup was a breeze. All I had to do after installing the toner and paper was to plug in the power cord and the USB cord and BAM! It was ready to go. There was no need to go to setup.brother.com to install any drivers. The machine is also much smaller than the description says. In all actuality, it’s approximately 14″X14″, so it fits in a smaller area than what you might think. This printer prints clear, sharp copies and I could not be happier with my purchase.

Do not buy this for use with Macs

Apparently the newest Mac OS versions do not “backwards support” older printers. I couldn’t determine whether this printer was supported under Mac OS Sonoma / 14.x so decided to take a chance – it’s a years-newer printer, and I had great experiences with previous Brother printers on Macs.

But, nope. macOS Sonoma / 14.x does not have a native driver for this printer, nor does Brother provide a driver for this printer. If you have Windows… or LINUX, yes, Brother does support it. But not MacOS.

So, back it goes, and lesson learned to check the BROTHER website for Mac OS drivers before buying the next Brother printer… if I decide to do that. Maybe it’s time to move to another brand (that’s not HP).

Works with Windows 7 and prints well. Plug in and Play.

Crispy text clean text, fast printing, and the Windows 10 driver works great on Windows 7 even though it’s not officially supported. -1 star because the rollers are leaving an unsightly texture on printouts, the paper curls back when coming out of the printer. It’s good for every day home and office use but I wouldn’t print anything professional on this printer with that issue.

edit — I’m giving it that star back because it IS a no-hassle printer. Literally, put the toner cartridge in, plug power and USB in, and print. You MIGHT need to download the driver to get it running, but other than that, there is no setup, no geo-location requirements, no registration, no subscriptions, nothing. Plug in and play, just like the 90s

It will serve well for making hard copies of my college work, shipping addresses, etc. Overall a good office printer and the text is sharper on paper than it is on my screen.

Works very good – Easy setup – Great Printing

I’ve used Brother printers in my past. This is a simple printer without any Wi-Fi or Lan. I needed a USB printer connected to my work PC for general light printing. This one (see the video) was setup and operational within minutes of unpacking. I highly recommend this printer

if you’re needing a USB printer without frills. Brother makes a good printer, and this one doesn’t disappoint.

Doesn’t work with mac

Who makes a printer that doesn’t work with Mac? I shouldn’t have to double check that a printer works with my computer.

bigboyJanuary 21, 2024

Doesnt have Mac drivers

It is advertised as MAC compatible, however as of now there is no any MAC drivers on Brother website for this model yet.

Does not come ready to use, Does not work with Mac!

How is it so hard to include a USB cable if that’s what’s required to make it useable? So, now I have to order a cable and wait for that. Why is that not plastered all over the product page? I will only update to a better review once I can actually test this thing and it proves itself worthy. Not a great start.

Update: Does not have drivers to work on a Mac. What a huge waste of time and energy. Why is this printer even on the market??? Negative 5 stars!!

Saving the Laser

Nowadays, getting any type of instruction manual when you buy electronics is rare. Everything is online, and in old-fashioned opinion, reading or referring to a manual in a PDF file could be more convenient. Scrolling back and forth when you need a procedure on Page XX while the diagram of the layout is on Page X is a waste of time. With printed sheets, you can just put them side by side in front of you and go back and forth by only moving your eyes. Again, admittedly, I’m old-fashioned. We need manuals for the computers we build and the many components used in their building.

Now that I have confessed that – we were using a color laser printer to print the manuals. Most laser printers are programmed to print black by using the three other colors when the document is RGB. The bottom line is the cost of using the color laser printer to do this, which costs several hundred every month. Getting this has cut the cost down considerably. A black toner is much cheaper, and the printer is much faster at printing in black, even in the duplex mode. If this continues to be a better solution, we will probably get a printer with a large sheet capacity, as this printer’s only drawback is having to load paper several times when a manual encompasses several hundred pages.
