Customer Reviews Summary

The Brother Wireless HL-L3280CDW Compact Digital Color Printer has garnered mixed reviews from customers across multiple platforms. Many users appreciate its robust build, efficient performance, and compact design, making it a suitable choice for home and small office settings. The 27 pages per minute print speed, 2400 x 600 dpi resolution, and automatic duplex printing are frequently highlighted as standout features. Its capability to print directly from mobile devices and cloud-based apps, combined with a user-friendly 2.7-inch touchscreen interface, adds convenience for tech-savvy users.

However, some customers expressed dissatisfaction with certain aspects. The printer’s toner cost, estimated at $247.99 for a set of standard cartridges, is a common concern, as replacement cartridges are perceived to be expensive. Additionally, connectivity issues, particularly with macOS 14 devices, were noted, with users citing difficulties in setting up and maintaining wireless connections. Complaints about the lack of scanning capabilities and occasional paper handling problems, such as paper curling and creasing, were also prominent. Despite these drawbacks, users who prioritize speed, reliability, and print quality over advanced features like scanning found the printer to be a worthy investment. The feedback overall showcases a balance between strengths and areas requiring improvement, providing potential buyers with a well-rounded perspective.

PROS

  • Fast Printing Speed: The printer can deliver up to 27 pages per minute, making it efficient for high-volume tasks. A user mentioned, “This thing is fast and efficient. Way better than our inkjet printer.” This speed has made it a favorite among users who need to print extensive documents frequently.
  • Compact and Sturdy Build: Despite its compact size, the printer has a robust design that withstands frequent use. Customers appreciate its small footprint, ideal for home offices. One user highlighted, “I needed a printer with a small footprint, and this one fits perfectly.”
  • High-Quality Prints: The 2400 x 600 dpi resolution ensures vibrant colors and sharp text clarity. “The color and text are very good. Simple install,” noted a reviewer. This makes it suitable for both professional and casual print jobs requiring vivid colors.
  • Automatic Duplex Printing: Saves time and paper by efficiently printing on both sides. Many customers found this feature highly beneficial for professional documents, saying it reduced paper costs significantly.
  • Versatile Connectivity Options: Supports Wi-Fi, USB, and Ethernet connections. One user highlighted its seamless integration with various devices, including Android and iOS. “Printing from my phone is effortless,” shared a satisfied buyer.

CONS

  • Expensive Toner: Replacement cartridges are costly, with standard yield cartridges rated for 1,500 pages for black and 1,200 pages for color. “Toner costs over $400!!!!,” exclaimed one frustrated user. This issue often deters buyers who are cost-conscious about long-term usage.
  • Limited macOS Compatibility: Users of macOS 14 reported issues with drivers and accessing certain print settings. “Basic printing is possible with AirPrint but is definitely a workaround,” shared a customer. This limits its appeal to Apple device users who expect seamless integration.
  • Connectivity Issues: A few users faced challenges with maintaining wireless connections, especially with Apple devices. One reviewer stated, “Every time it goes idle, it loses its network connection.” This has led to frustration, particularly among users who rely on constant connectivity.
  • Lack of Scanning Capability: This single-function printer disappointed customers who expected scanning features. “I missed the part where there is not a scanner attached,” noted one buyer. For those needing multi-functional capabilities, this printer falls short.
  • Paper Handling Concerns: Some users reported issues with curled or creased paper upon printing, especially with specific paper types. “The pages come out curled, even with adjustments to reduce curling,” said a reviewer. Such issues could impact professional document quality.

Who Should Buy?

The Brother Wireless HL-L3280CDW is an excellent choice for small businesses and home offices that prioritize printing efficiency and reliability over multifunction capabilities. It’s particularly suited for users who need a high-speed printer for professional documents and occasional color printing. If you frequently print large volumes and value features like automatic duplex printing, Wi-Fi connectivity, and energy-efficient design, this printer is a strong contender. Furthermore, its compact design makes it ideal for environments with limited space. However, it may not be the best fit for those needing an all-in-one solution with scanning or those on a tight budget for consumables. Buyers who print less frequently might find the high toner costs prohibitive, while others seeking extensive macOS 14 compatibility might need to explore alternatives.

Do Users Recommend This Product?

Overall, users recommend the Brother Wireless HL-L3280CDW for its speed, print quality, and reliability. Those transitioning from inkjet printers found it to be a significant upgrade, citing reduced maintenance and better print quality as key advantages. However, the high toner costs and occasional connectivity issues detract from its appeal. Customers advise potential buyers to consider their printing needs carefully—particularly the frequency of color printing and compatibility with existing systems—before making a purchase. Users also highlight the importance of understanding the printer’s limitations, such as the lack of scanning and potential challenges with macOS devices. If the printer’s strengths align with your priorities, it’s a worthwhile investment for reliable and efficient printing. For those willing to manage its shortcomings, it remains a dependable choice that delivers consistent results in the long run.

Wireless Compact Digital Color Printer

This print is so easy to setup and use. You can even print photos from your smart phone. The quality is great for the price. I have had about 5 Brother printers and they have always works very well with very little maintenance.

Engineered to Waste Toner Cartridges

Brother printers have always been engineered to waste toner cartridges … that is , to give you an error message that the toner is low when in fact it has plenty of ink left. That way they get to sell more toner cartridges. Brother has even gone as far as putting chips in the replacement cartridges in an order to discourage using non-Brother replacement cartridges. However, in the past, you had the ability to reset the toner counter to clear the toner error message. NOT with their latest printer! Apparently, they have eliminated the ability to reset the toner cartridge counter. Furthermore, the printer now shuts down and WILL NOT print until you replace it with a Brother cartridge. If one of the four colored cartridges is “low” you cannot print even using the other available cartridges. What a shame! Will not buy another Brother printer.

Good printer marred by annoying vender software and “features”

The printer itself is fine it prints quickly, and for a laser style printer. The output is fair. When printing pictures, the color is not saturated like the original. It’s all doll and flat even blacks show up that way, but that’s just part and parcel of the kind of printer it is.

Setting up the printer was needlessly involved. Vendor software is just a shell to download more software, and all of it is designed to just install unneeded components. Got tired of jumping through hoops to just have the printer installed and deleted the vendor software which still hadn’t managed to actually setup the printer.

Adding the printer to the wireless network wasn’t smooth either yet at first wouldn’t detect any wireless networks, and trying to enter a manually was a bust. Fortunately, attempting to set up the wireless network a second time it found the wireless network it was able to connect to the network. From there setting up the printer trivial just added printer. It was found automatically and configured automatically by the operating system.

Through the entire unboxing and set up process the vendor constantly tries to get you to subscribe to a wasteful print supply agreement where you will always and unavoidably throw toner out. This appears to be brothers way of bringing the farce of inkjet printer supplies to laser, printers, and artificially increase the cost of printing, while simultaneously increasing waste, which is bad for the environment.

This extends to the printer itself, which is designed to prevent you from actually using all of the toner and toner cartridge. I knew this going in and had verified that when the printer refuses to use more of the toner the block can be overridden. It’s annoying and has to be done every time for every toner cartridge. Not the end of world but an unnecessary annoyance.

Cannot keep it connected to the network.

I have two other Brother printers and I generally like them but this HL-L3280CDW printer is a joke. It seems that every time it goes idle, it loses its network connection. I spent two days messing with the thing and finally had to return it to Amazon.

Before returning it, however, I was so confident that I could get it going, even though the reviews showed that more than10% of the buyers were pretty much dissatisfied, I registered the purchase with Brother and even signed up for the “EZ Print Subscription”; got confirmation emails, congrats on my new account, and even a “NEWS FLASH: You’re Getting an Extended Warranty!” email.

After returning the printer, I attempted to cancel the EZ Print Subscription, but they have apparently never heard of me. They know my name, phone number, etc. but I don’t have an account set up yet, even though I’ve gone through the entire routine three times. Never was able to cancel the subscription. Brother is more of a clown show than Barnum & Bailey.

Perhaps if they paid more attention to skill and ability and less to D E I, they might be able to get something to work right. If you’re hankering for an ulcer, this is the printer and company for you.

Great printer but with a serious drawback

This printer is the best laser printer I’ve owned as far as clarity and vibrant colors; however, it has a serious drawback. Some internal rollers or something is creasing the paper. I’m using Hammermill 24lb paper as I have always used in all my printers. This is the first time I’ve noticed creases in the paper. I gave tech support one star because I can’t find an adjustment for paper thickness like my other printers.

Great printer, refills are a scam

Pro: Great quality, very fast, minimal issues initiating print requests compared to other printers.

Con: Every time you run out of ink, you might as well buy new printer.

Toner for this is TN229 only brother makes it. Previous models you can find replacement toner, but at $298 for a C,M,Y,BK refill you for $1 more you might as well buy a whole new HL-3280. You would be better off with an older model, so that you can buy compatible ink for 1/6 the cost. Cartridges last 1500 sheets of paper.

The refresh refill is super shady about it’s pricing. They charge you a flat fee per month, but don’t tell you how often you get replacement packs. It was such a terrible user experience, I’d rather just buy a new printer (or rather, an old one with replacement ink available for much less).

Excellent Color Laser Printer

This Brother HL-L3280CDW Wireless Compact Digital Color Printer arrived well packaged and in excellent condition. The quality and manufacture of the printer appears to meet quality standards for a business or home printer. The printer is relatively compact in size for a color printer. I am a fan of Brother printers and have used a Brother MFC-L2750DW laser printer for over 3 years and its performance has been rock solid. This printer was very easy to setup. It was truly plug and play. I really like the functionality and ease of use of the new Brother Print&Scan app for Windows 11. It also has an app for Android phones, which I have not yet installed. We routinely print a lot of greeting cards and flyers, and the print quality is very good. The printer easily handles card stock and prints to both sides of the paper when setup for duplex printing. This is an excellent printer. I highly recommend it.

Two Machines – Same Bug – Won’t Print

I bought this printer based on mostly good reviews, compact size and price. It worked initially, but then some print jobs would randomly cancel themselves. The print dialog box would indicate it was sending job to printer (the screen said receiving data, then “waiting for job to complete,” and then “job cancelled”). It would do this on random print jobs with .doc and jpg, pdf and jpeg files. My first attempt to resolve was to update the software with no improvement. Then I deleted the printer and drivers from my IOS computer and reinstalled. I did this repeatedly. I tried to print via airprint, wifi and a computer cable; all with the same problem persisting. I called Brother tech support. The agent asked phone number in case we got disconnected. I spent over an hour with him repeatedly doing the same things I had tried on my own with no resolution. While on hold waiting for him to check on any other possible solutions, we were disconnected. Despite having my callback number, I never got a call back from Brother. I returned it to Amazon for a replacement. I have just set it up and am having the same problem. In searching for answers on the internet, I see many people have had this same issue and most have not been able to resolve it. After hours of wasted time and no solutions with two machines, I would not recommend this printer to anyone!

Quiet with sharp print output

Pros:
Ethernet port
WiFi
USB
Quiet
Excellent print quality
Compact footprint
Automatic Duplex printing
256mb ram

Cons:
Nothing of note

Item of note:
Doesn’t include a USB Type-B cable
Doesn’t include an ethernet cable

Easy to setup with cartridges inside the printer, but you must remove and reinstall the cartridges which have transit tabs attached. Warm-up is silent and printing is quiet. Print jobs come out quickly, with sharp text. Despite being compact, the power supply is inside the machine, which is a good thing. No worries about a power brick taking up room.

I liked the fact that there were privacy prompts from Brother before you connected to the Internet to check for firmware updates. It even prompts you to change the default password, which is located on a sticker on the back.

Bottom Line: A very capable printer with excellent sharp printing. I would order again.

Great printer

OK, so I am a fan of the brother laser printers. I have used their color laserjets in past and have been very happy with them.

One huge advantage you get with the laserjet over inkjets is they don’t have any clogging issues. If you print constantly then this is not a huge deal but if you are like me printing these days is not something I do very often. So knowing that this can sit for months between usage and I don’t have to worry when I do need to print is just perfect.

Super easy to set up and use. Includes everything you need. Print speed and quality are excellent. I highly recommend this printer for home or office use. It is a fantastic printer!
