🗣️ Customers Say

Users celebrate the Brother MFC-J1010DW as a budget-friendly workhorse, praising its fast document printing and freedom from expensive ink subscriptions. However, be prepared for a potentially tricky wireless setup and the frustration of the printer halting all jobs when just one color cartridge runs out.

Customer Reviews Summary

The Brother MFC-J1010DW has garnered a strong reputation among users for its impressive performance and user-friendly design. Many customers highlight the printer’s relatively easy setup process, which allows them to get it up and running in minutes, often citing the Brother mobile app as a helpful tool for a seamless experience. While some users note initial challenges with wireless configuration, particularly with mesh networks, the general sentiment is that once connected, the wireless connectivity is stable and reliable, enabling effortless printing from various devices, including laptops, smartphones, and tablets. Users also frequently appreciate the printer’s compact design, which makes it an ideal fit for home offices and small workspaces where it can be placed on a shelf or desk without taking up a premium. The intuitive interface, featuring physical buttons rather than a finicky touchscreen, is another plus for those who prefer straightforward operation.

In terms of performance, the MFC-J1010DW consistently delivers high-quality prints with sharp text and vibrant colors, making it suitable for everything from school reports and business invoices to shipping labels and occasional photos. Users are impressed with the clarity and detail of the output for everyday document printing. The printer’s fast printing speed for standard documents is another standout feature, allowing users to complete their printing tasks quickly and efficiently, though some note that high-quality photo printing is considerably slower. The all-in-one functionality, which includes a reliable scanner, copier, and fax machine, adds to its versatility and makes it a valuable tool for a wide range of tasks, with the automatic document feeder being a particularly praised convenience.

Overall, the Brother MFC-J1010DW is a highly-rated printer that offers a winning combination of performance, convenience, and affordability. Many reviewers, particularly those switching from brands like HP, express immense relief over the lack of forced ink subscriptions and the freedom to use third-party cartridges, which they feel gives them more control and saves money. This sense of value, combined with the printer’s reliability and versatility, has earned it numerous positive reviews, with many users recommending it as a top-performing all-in-one printer. For students, small business owners, or anyone tired of the ink-subscription headaches of other brands, users agree the MFC-J1010DW is a solid investment that respects both your wallet and your time.

✅ What Are the Advantages of This Product?

  • Cost-Effective and Efficient: A key highlight for many users is the individual ink cartridge system. Unlike printers with tri-color cartridges, this design allows you to replace only the specific color that has run out, which many reviewers found to be a significant money-saver compared to their previous HP or Canon models. One user commented, “I’ve been impressed with how long the ink cartridges last, making this a very cost-effective printer to own.”
  • Exceptional Print Quality: The Brother MFC-J1010DW is praised for its ability to produce high-quality prints with sharp, clear text and vibrant colors. This makes it an excellent choice for a wide range of printing needs, from professional documents to personal photos. As one user noted, “The print quality is outstanding, with crisp text and vivid colors that bring my documents to life.”
  • User-Friendly Design and Fast Performance: This printer is designed with the user in mind, featuring an intuitive interface and easy-to-follow instructions. Many users found the setup process straightforward and appreciate the fast printing speeds for documents. A satisfied customer shared, “I was able to set it up in minutes, and the wireless printing feature is a game-changer for my home office.”

❌ What Are the Disadvantages of This Product?

  • Challenging Wireless Setup for Some: A significant number of users reported that the initial setup process can be a bit challenging, particularly when it comes to connecting the printer to a wireless network. While the printer does come with instructions, some users have found them to be unclear, leading to a longer setup time than expected. To overcome this, some successful users recommend using the Brother mobile app for a smoother wireless setup or temporarily connecting the printer with a USB cable during the initial configuration.
  • Ink Availability and System Quirks: While many appreciate the ink system’s cost-effectiveness, a recurring complaint is the difficulty in finding replacement ink cartridges, particularly the black ink (LC401BK), which is often out of stock. A major point of frustration is that the printer will not print in black and white if any of the color cartridges are empty. This ‘ink hostage’ situation, as some users call it, means a single empty color cartridge can bring all printing to a halt, rendering the machine a ‘useless paperweight’ until the specific, and sometimes hard-to-find, cartridge is replaced. As one user stated, “What a ripoff to hassle you to buy more ink. Never again buying a brother printer with this gimmick.”
  • Noisy Operation: A few users have noted that the printer can be quite noisy during operation, which may be a concern for those who work in a quiet environment. The sound of the printer can be distracting, especially during long print jobs. One customer commented, “The printer is a bit louder than I expected, and the noise can be a bit disruptive when I’m on a conference call.”

⚖️ How Does This Product Compare to Other Options?

Many users who switched from other major brands like HP, Canon, and Epson found the Brother MFC-J1010DW to be a significant improvement, particularly in terms of ink management and overall value. A common theme is the relief from aggressive or mandatory ink subscription programs that other brands push. Users frequently mention that Brother’s approach feels more customer-friendly, allowing the use of third-party ink cartridges without locking the device. While some note that the print quality for photos might be slightly less vibrant than certain Canon models, the speed and reliability for document printing are often cited as superior to comparable HP printers.

⚠️ What Are the Most Common Problems?

The most frequently reported issue with the Brother MFC-J1010DW is the difficulty in finding replacement ink cartridges, especially the black ink. This has been a source of frustration for many users who have had to search multiple retailers to find the necessary supplies. Another common problem is the challenging setup process, with some users finding the wireless connection to be particularly difficult to establish, especially with mesh routers. The printer’s noisy operation and the inability to print in monochrome when a color cartridge is empty are also mentioned by several users as potential drawbacks.

💡 How Can You Get the Best Experience with This Product?

Based on user feedback, the best way to ensure a smooth experience with the Brother MFC-J1010DW is to use the Brother Mobile Connect app for the initial wireless setup, as many found it more intuitive than the on-screen prompts. For firmware updates, be aware that the required password is often printed on a label on the back of the printer itself. To avoid printing issues, it’s wise to keep a spare set of ink cartridges on hand, especially the black one, due to reported stock shortages.

🏗️ How Durable Is This Product?

The Brother MFC-J1010DW is generally regarded as a durable and well-built printer for its price range. Many users have commented on its solid construction and the quality of the materials used, with some mentioning their previous Brother printers lasted for over a decade. The printer is designed to withstand regular use in a home or small office environment. However, a recurring comment points to some user-facing plastic components, specifically the paper tray and the thin paper output catcher, feeling flimsy or less robust than on older, more tank-like Brother models. Despite this, the general consensus is that the printer is a reliable workhorse.

⏳ What Do Long-Term Users Say?

Long-term users of the Brother MFC-J1010DW have consistently praised its reliability and performance over time. Many have reported that the printer continues to function flawlessly even after months or years of regular use, a testament to the brand’s reputation for longevity. The durability of the printer is another key highlight, with many users noting that it has held up well to the demands of a busy home or office environment. The cost-effectiveness of the individual ink cartridge system is also a major selling point for long-term users, who appreciate the savings they have achieved through its efficient use of ink compared to competitors.

🎯 Is This Product Right for You?

The Brother MFC-J1010DW is an excellent choice for a wide range of users, including students, home office professionals, and small business owners who need a versatile and reliable machine for moderate use. Its strong performance in document printing, scanning, and copying makes it highly practical. However, if your primary need is high-quality photo printing or you require duplex (two-sided) scanning from the automatic document feeder, you might want to consider other models, as these are noted weaknesses.

🤔 Is This Product Worth It?

Based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback from users, the Brother MFC-J1010DW is definitely worth the investment, offering a rare balance of affordability, all-in-one functionality, and dependable performance that stands out in the crowded home printer market. Its combination of high-quality performance, user-friendly features, and freedom from restrictive ink subscriptions makes it a standout product in its category. Ultimately, users feel it’s a smart and practical choice for anyone who prioritizes long-term value over flashy features and is tired of the ink-related headaches common with other brands.

❓ FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

  • Can I print in black and white if a color ink cartridge is empty?
No, based on numerous user reviews, the printer will not allow you to print in monochrome if any of the color ink cartridges are empty. It is recommended to have a full set of cartridges to ensure uninterrupted printing.
  • Does this printer support duplex (two-sided) scanning from the document feeder?

Good printer, sucks ink

I do like Brother printers, and this one is high on the list. Easy to set up (I added a wifi range extender to give uninterrupted wifi to my phone) easy to understand. I am a HEAVY printer for just a few weeks of a year. This machine ran non stop for a few hours, and did get to the “grey” phase of print quality that all Brother mfc machines seem to get. I may be able to adjust density/quality if I use a pc. I was able to make decent additional copies using the copy function and increasing density. But that causes increased ink use. I went through the included black cartridge AND an “XL” black cartridge. The XL cartridges only allow 250 pages – not as XL as I need.
While I am intrigued by the auto refill option offered by Brother, I am unsure as to which level I should get. It will automatically increase your level based on what you print, but won’t automatically reduce that level based on reduced use. And it is a bit intrusive, knowing a company can see how much I print. That option can be turned off in the mobile connect app though.
The machine CAN easily 2 sided print, but in order to do 2 sided copying, you either need to put each side on the glass, or run the machine as 1 side to 2 side. The ADF is very good using 24lb paper, with printing being speedy. The lower tray can barely hold 150 sheets, fewer means no jams.
I haven’t scanned yet, but the machine apparently can scan direct to a file without futzing with another program.
We use our mfc-j6920dw for faxing. But the color touchscreen and nice buttons on the 1010 would make faxing a breeze.
The machine has a small footprint and runs quietly. The wireless functions are good with the wifi extender, and the mobile app is very nice with my S24+ phone. I can print right from my Google Drive, very handy for me. Ink prices vary, but the LC401 cartridges are available in plenty. I got 5 xl black cartridges for under $40, a nice deal. I’m still on the “starter” color cartridges. For the price, this machine is quite good.

Fraudulent Advertising

This printer is satisfactory for everyday printing, scanning, and copying. I have never printed any photos, so I can’t comment on that function. I use this printer for work at my home office. Everything was normal until I started running low on ink. But, being a gullible consumer, I had signed up for the “Refresh” option to have ink automatically delivered when it was running low.

I purchased this printer in April of this year. On the 18th of July, I started getting nervous since I was under the impression that my black ink would be replaced by now. I call Brother customer support to ask about the status of my refill. The representative told me that until the ink reaches the 20% level, the auto-order service does not activate. I explained that this printer is used for work and I could not afford to run out of ink. He assured me I had plenty of time and not to worry! The very next day, my black ink ran out, and my projects came to a halt. I am now functionally out of business! I called again and was greeted by the auto attendant, that told me my call would be returned within 30 minutes. My call was never returned, even after 2 more calls. I went to the Brother website to order ink and found their proprietary brand ink was very poorly rated! This forced me to order ink from Amazon that was generic for this model printer. After making the purchase, I received an email from Brother stating that the refill was being shipped (the expected time of delivery was unknown!). I have now lost 2-3 days of production due to Brother’s incompetence. DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID!

Nice compact all-in-one

I got this printer/copier/scanner for my home to use whenever needed for school for my child and our personal use. It was extremely easy to setup and connect to my wireless network. Looked up many printers and ended up deciding on this one because it is one of the few ones in this category and price where you can do two-sided printing, and easily. The ink is also affordable, which is what turns me away from other renowned brands. I have used Brother printers at work for years and they have worked great, so I’m hopeful this one will too. The reason I deducted one star is because the color printing is veeery slow. It gets the job done, but you have to be patient.

Works well, easy setup & use, WiFi & USB connections

I’ve had this printer for about a month. So far so good. The setup process was super easy and probably only took about 15-20 mins max. It works great and I had no issues connecting via WiFi. I like that it has a USB connection option – which many don’t – in case I have issues in the future with WiFi printing. While there are a lot of buttons on the printer itself leading to an over complicated interface, it’s actually very easy to use. The print quality has also been great so far. It prints colors nicely though I mainly use for black and white. Knock on wood, I’ve also had no error messages. While it’s obviously not for big jobs, it prints pretty quickly all things considered.

While I can’t speak to its longevity given the limited time I’ve owned it, I will note that the printer tray is not made out of the most durable plastic. I accidentally damaged the tray during set up when a tiny little plastic piece (the hinge) broke off, so now the tray doesn’t extend all the way out. This was not because it was hard to install the tray, rather I was just being careless and bent it in the wrong direction like an idiot. Fortunately, it has not caused any issues with printing.

Overall, this printer has done its job well so far and provides good value considering the price point. If you searching for a home office printer and getting sick of reading way too many reviews that led me to believe they all sucked, then I would recommend ending your search and getting this one.

A Perfect Printer for Home and Small Office – Brother MFC-J010DW!

I rarely give a perfect 5-star rating, but the Brother MFC-J010DW has genuinely earned every single one of them. As someone who juggles both work-from-home tasks and personal printing needs, finding a printer that ticks all the boxes – reliability, efficiency, quality, and ease of use – has always been a challenge. The MFC-J010DW doesn’t just tick them; it excels at them.

Setup was an absolute breeze. From unboxing to printing my first document, it took mere minutes. The wireless connectivity was seamless, connecting to my home network without a hitch, and printing from both my laptop and mobile devices has been incredibly straightforward thanks to its intuitive app and direct print capabilities.

Print quality is consistently superb. Whether it’s sharp, crisp text documents for work reports or vibrant, true-to-life color photos for family albums, this printer delivers. I’ve been particularly impressed with the detail and clarity it achieves, even on standard paper.

The MFC-J010DW is a true multifunction workhorse. The scanner is fast and accurate, perfect for digitizing important documents. The copier function is equally impressive, producing clear duplicates quickly. And the automatic duplex printing (two-sided printing) is a game-changer, saving both paper and time – an absolute must-have feature for any busy individual or small business.

Ink efficiency is another major plus. I’ve found the cartridges to last a surprisingly long time, which is a welcome relief compared to previous printers that seemed to guzzle ink. This translates to real savings in the long run.

Finally, the compact design means it fits perfectly into my home office setup without being an eyesore. It’s quiet in operation, which is great for not disrupting calls or concentration.

In summary, the Brother MFC-J010DW is an outstanding printer that offers incredible value. It’s reliable, versatile, produces high-quality output, and is incredibly user-friendly. If you’re looking for a printer that truly does it all, flawlessly and efficiently, look no further. This is the one!

Hard to print envelopes and greeting cards.

Printer does well with overall black and white and color printing. Unfortunately I purchased it solely for Christmas card and envelope printing. I did not realize that not all printers have rear feeding tray. Also envelopes supported by this printer are only few sizes. If you set the plastic tabs in the paper cassette off the little holes the printer will say that the paper size is mismatched. Even if your envelope is smaller the clip has to be inside it’s notch. I learned it after messing with the printer for about 45 minutes…. also if you’re greeting cards are thick or have any glitter on them you can only print them one at a time. And also the wheels that pick up the paper will get so dirty from the glitter that after three or four greeting cards paper will keep on jamming… also if you would like to connect the printer with USB the cable is hidden underneath the scanner bed, but access is on the right hand side…

Great compact printer

This is a great little printer and I am very pleased with it. First the only negative. It ships with aftermarket ink cartridges, not Brother. The printer would not recognize them and would not set up. Thankfully I also ordered a replacement set of Brother Ink cartridges, so once I pulled the aftermarket cartridges out and replaced them with Brother cartridges, the printer was a breeze to set up. If you buy this printer make sure that you also buy a set of Brother replacement cartridges as the same time. This printer is a good build quality, a compact size, was easy to program and set up and I am very happy with it. Brother – shame on you for not shipping Brother Ink Cartridges with your printer, which is the reason for 4 stars.

Excellent value for the money!

Weighing the cost versus performance this is an excellent ink jet color printer, copier and scanner.

The set up was very easy and the wireless connection no problem.

The use of individual ink cartridges gets around the waste of having a tri-color cartridge.

The intuitive buttons and LCD screen makes for easy “no brainer” operation with visual ink levels and ques. This may be old school to some but after using the HP “neuvo” status link with an iPhone link left the decision to switch to this Brother unit.

And it fit the shelf where my previous HP ink-jet all in one printer resided!

Note: I was a long time HP printer user.

It’s OK?

I dislike that I had a very hard time getting the printer to connect to my devices. I still have not been able to connect the wireless on my phone or laptop that app continues to give me an error message. This is one of the main reason why I brought it was because it was wireless but as of today I have not been able to connect it. In order for me to scan or print my document I have to connect it with the cable for it to work. Yes! I have updated the software it says is the most current firmware but continues to give me error messages that I get so frustrated. About the free ink it is ridiculous they tried to charge me when it says I am suppose to get free ink for 3 month this is a joke. I done all the process to get my free ink and have not receive not even one refill. It is so frustrating when a company advertise a bonus to get their product but do not follow through on their commitment. It is very upsetting. The quality of the printer is good and it does scan very well. Suggest that a better break down should be given to connect your wireless printer since your link takes you to different link and never get the solution resolved.
