SET-UP 4.0 ~ OPERATION 4.5 ~ PRINT QUALITY 4.0 ~ WI-FI 5.0+

Overall, a good product in my opinion, once you get through the setup procedure. Having to go online for a somewhat cumbersome process was a bit irritating. I wish a printed manual was included in the box but unfortunately each time you have a question or issue, you have to go online. You can print the manual from online but then you would need to order more ink cartridges from all the printing. As for the printer’s functions, they all work great and easily, from printing to copying to scanning. (I haven’t connected the fax line.) And the wireless feature is GREAT – I can now easily print from my phone, iPad, laptop and computer. All in all, I recommend especially if you’re looking for a good wi-fi printer.
HINT: Write down the pre-set password that’s on the back of the printer as soon as you take it out of the box. When you reset your password to a more secure one, you’ll need that number. I didn’t realize that until I already had my printer set up against a wall, so I had to practically stand on my head with a flashlight and magnifying glass and read it upside down while trying to write it down on scratch pad.

Great home or SOHO printer

The printer comes well-packed in a heavy-duty cardboard box with styrofoam. The printer is heavier and seems more rugged or well-made than my old Canon home printer. I’ve uploaded a photo showing what comes in the box. Basically, it’s just the printer, a phone cord for the fax machine function, a set of ink cartridges, and the paperwork. The only physical assembly is pulling off a few pieces of adhesive tape, plugging it in, adding paper, and inserting the ink cartridges. It’s very simple to get up and going. There is a setup sequence you need to go through to prime the print nozzles and do an alignment check, but everything is done on the printer touchpad and is quite simple. In total, it took about 15 minutes from unboxing to finished setup. The only hitch I found was that I had to click on the setup tool icon to initiate the wifi setup. Also, entering my wifi password using the touchpad was a bit tedious because I have large hands and fingers and kept mistyping. Setting the wifi password is a one-time thing, so it’s no big deal. The control panel tilts upward several degrees, which makes it easier to access.

The print quality is very good. It’s at least as good or better than the five-year-old Canon Pixma this printer is replacing. I printed a color test sheet of the Amazon home page, which you can see in my photo (I intentionally blurred my zip code in the photo, the entire print was clean and crisp). The color accuracy looks quite good. It took about 20 seconds to print a color page with images on it. Printing a B&W page of text took about 8 seconds for single-sided and about 27 seconds for double-sided page. Again, it seemed considerably faster than my older Canon Pixma. The B&W text came out very crisp and sharp and, in my opinion, looks nearly as good as from a laser printer.

Loading the paper is simple and holds quite a bit of paper. Once the paper is loaded, however, you can’t see the paper. So you won’t know how low you are unless you slide out the paper holder to look. The documentation refers to the included ink cartridges as ‘Starter Cartridges’. I checked the price of a replacement set, and they are not cheap. I hope they last a while.

There is a driver package for the software that you download from Brother’s website. I’m on a Mac, and the download was a DMG file to install. Again, it was very straightforward, though it involved a few steps to get it installed. Once installed, you’ll have an app called Brother iPrint & Scan that has only two icons, one for printing and one for scanning. Printing from my word processor was the same as with the old printer; just select the Brother printer from the list of available printers, set your print options and press print.

This printer has a built-in paper cutter to cut a sheet in half. That could be useful if you print shipping labels, I suppose. It also has a built-in fax machine. I don’t intend to use either of those functions. Strictly based on use as a home printer, I’d say this is the nicest inkjet I’ve owned and just as nice as the bigger inkjets at work.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRINTER

Have, unfortunately, owned this Model since end of November 2023. It was not inexpensive. But since December 1, I’ve discovered that their “Apps” don’t support Android Samsung phones or Tablets. I have been frustratingly unable to Register the printer and the multiple scan codes are useless.
Replacing Ink cartridges for this model is not possible. I surmised that with so many issues on this machine, including the need to buy a Magnifying Glass to read the screen, all of these problems have led me to understand that this model is sorrowfully outdated.
I set it up in WiFi and the teenie little window on printer “Confirmed” .
I’ve been printing via wifi for 2.5 months but the Brother website cannot recognize this model.
I’ve tried to find the ink matched to this machine on: Brother.com, Office Max, Staples, Amazon and their Refresh Ink program. There are no compatible ink cartridges available for replacement on model MFC-J1800DW
Customer Service is open M-F, 9-5, of course, when customers are home doing nothing. They offer: No Weekend support, No Holiday support , No Chat option nor an email address to contact support.
It’s going to recycling as soon as my new, HP Printer replaces it.

Great item.

I have always liked Brother printers. This all in one is no different. It is easy to set up, use and maintain as well as easy to load onto the computer. Unlike other printers I have had, this loaded itself without the need to download further software and it prints brilliantly. I will ALWAYS recommend Brother printers for these reasons.

Can’t connect to computer.

I don’t use it much but it’s a nice machine. Only lets to save to Onedrive via wifi or something… (haven’t used it in a while so I don’t recall precisely.) Tried out the “cut” feature, that was cool. The one thing I’m NOT happy with (besides no option to save to computer) is what they call the “USB” connection…. it is NOT a USB plug, it’s the same type of plug you have on a landline telephone. Can’t plug it into my computer for direct printing/saving so that is a HUGE problem…. If I had known this upfront, I would not have bought this printer.

Great Printer

This is one of the easiest printers I’ve ever set up. The print and cut feature is exactly what I need. Would highly recommend to those who may need a printer with this feature.

Versatile and Efficient

The quality of prints from this printer is very good! An added bonus is the half cuts that it does. These are perfect for invitations where a full sheet is not needed. Print speed is very efficient as well.

Superb MFC device with touchscreen controls. Priced just right-colors print rich and bright.

Brother is one of the most reliable computer related-electronics Brand that I’ve owned . This 5in1 printer does not disappoint. Product is simple to set up and it provides optimized performance. Printer is quality manufactured, well designed, competitively priced and most importantly ideal for home office use. Its compact design fits right in on my small desk space. This device is immensely appreciated because it arrived just in time to replace my recently nonfunctional sixteen year-old BROTHER MFC 3360 C printer. This all in one Multifunction device consolidates printing/copying/faxing/scanning along with a unique print and cut functionality.

Although it’s not a laser device, this product prints at the right speed for what I need. I am totally confident of product’s reliability and longevity. Therefore I highly recommend…

A good printer!

Brother makes an excellent printer. It’s wireless, copy, fax, scan, and print all from one device. Even better there’s a paper cutter to cut paper in half. It connects to all of my devices and I can print from anywhere wirelessly!
