🗣 Customers Say

Overall, users are pleased with the printer's exceptional speed and the value provided by the long-lasting INKvestment Tank system. However, a significant number of customers express disappointment over the lack of duplex (2-sided) and 11x17 scanning, alongside recurring connectivity issues for some.

Customer Reviews Summary

Users looking for a fast and efficient inkjet printer are generally impressed with the Brother MFC-J5855DW. Its most celebrated feature is its rapid print speed, which many compare favorably to laser printers, making it a workhorse for high-volume tasks. The print quality for standard documents is consistently described as crisp and clear. Many users, especially those upgrading from other brands like HP, praise the stable Wi-Fi connectivity and the easy-to-use mobile app, which allows for seamless printing from various devices.

The INKvestment Tank system is another major highlight, with customers confirming that the included ink lasts a surprisingly long time, offering excellent value and reducing the frequency of purchasing expensive cartridges. The ability to print on 11×17 ledger paper is a critical feature for professionals in fields like engineering and design, and it’s a capability that sets this printer apart in its price range. The overall build quality is often described as solid and durable, giving users confidence in its longevity.

However, the praise isn’t universal. The most prominent complaint centers on the scanner’s surprising limitations: it cannot scan 2-sided documents automatically or handle 11×17 paper, a frustrating oversight for a machine that prints in that format. Furthermore, users are divided on connectivity and setup, with a notable portion reporting persistent network drop-offs and a difficult installation process.

✅ What Are the Advantages of This Product?

  • Impressive Print Speed: Many users are genuinely surprised by how fast this inkjet printer is, often stating it rivals the speed of their previous laser printers. It handles both single documents and large print jobs quickly and efficiently, making it ideal for users who can’t afford to wait. As one user noted, “I was blown away with how fast this thing prints from my laptop or phone.”
  • Cost-Effective, Long-Lasting Ink: The INKvestment Tank system is a standout feature that delivers real-world value. Customers frequently express their satisfaction with how long the initial set of ink cartridges lasts, with some using the printer for many months of heavy use before needing replacements. This system effectively tackles the high cost of ink, a common frustration with other inkjet printers.
  • Versatile Paper Handling, Including 11×17 Printing: The ability to print on paper sizes up to 11×17 (ledger) is a game-changer for many small businesses, architects, and engineers. The printer features a 250-sheet capacity paper tray that can be adjusted for larger formats and a rear multipurpose tray for specialty media like cardstock and envelopes, adding to its flexibility.
  • Solid Build and Reliable Performance: Users often comment on the printer’s sturdy and robust construction, which feels more substantial than many competing models. For many, this translates into reliable day-to-day performance without the constant paper jams or flimsy parts that can plague other printers.

❌ What Are the Disadvantages of This Product?

  • No Duplex or 11×17 Scanning: This is the single biggest source of user frustration. Many purchase the printer assuming its duplex printing extends to scanning, only to discover the automatic document feeder (ADF) cannot scan two-sided documents automatically. Furthermore, the scanner bed and ADF are limited to letter/legal size, meaning it cannot scan 11×17 documents, a feature many assumed would be included on a device that can print that size.
  • Inconsistent Wireless Connectivity: While many praise its connectivity, a notable number of users report that the printer frequently disconnects from Wi-Fi or shows as “offline,” even with a strong signal. This requires them to restart the printer, their computer, or even reinstall drivers to get it working again, leading to significant frustration. One user summarized this experience, stating, “it keeps going off line and I cannot put it back on line without assistance.”
  • Occasional Print Quality and Paper Jam Issues: Some customers have experienced issues with clogged print heads, resulting in streaky, faded, or misaligned prints that require numerous cleaning cycles to resolve. These cleaning cycles consume a considerable amount of the highly-praised ink. Others have reported that the printer sometimes grabs multiple sheets of paper at once or jams when using thicker media like cardstock.

⚖️ How Does This Product Compare to Other Options?

In direct comparisons, users frequently pit the MFC-J5855DW against HP printers, with many celebrating their switch. They cite Brother’s more stable connectivity and express relief at escaping HP’s restrictive ink subscription models, with one user stating they were, ‘So relieved to be free from shackles of HP.’ However, the comparison isn’t always favorable, as some users upgrading from older Brother or Canon models felt this printer was a step down, particularly noting the lack of 11×17 scanning that their previous machines offered.

🎯 Is This Product Right for You?

This product is an excellent fit for home offices and small businesses that require fast, high-volume document printing and the flexibility of printing on 11×17 paper. Its economical ink system makes it a great choice for budget-conscious users who print frequently. However, if your workflow heavily relies on 2-sided scanning or scanning 11×17 documents, this printer is not the right choice for you, and its limitations will likely cause significant frustration. Users who are less tech-savvy may also struggle with the setup and occasional connectivity bugs.

⚠️ What Are the Most Common Problems?

The most frequently reported problems include the inability to scan 2-sided documents, the printer disconnecting from the Wi-Fi network, and print head issues that cause lines or streaks in prints. Some users also find the initial software setup confusing and the paper output tray design to be flawed, causing printed pages to become disorganized. A shortage of genuine LC406 replacement ink cartridges has also been a point of frustration for some.

🏗️ How Durable Is This Product?

User reviews suggest the Brother MFC-J5855DW has a solid and durable build quality. Many describe it as a “workhorse” or “beast,” noting its heavy and substantial feel compared to flimsier models from other brands. While some users have reported mechanical failures or issues with the print head after a year or two of use, the general consensus is that the physical construction of the printer is robust and designed for steady office use.

☎️ Customer Support & Warranty

Experiences with Brother’s customer support are mixed. Some users report positive interactions, finding the tech support representatives to be helpful and knowledgeable in resolving setup or connectivity issues. However, a significant number of customers describe a frustrating experience, citing long hold times, unhelpful chatbot interactions, and support agents who were unable to solve their problems, sometimes blaming the user’s network or computer instead of the printer itself.

🤔 Is This Product Worth It?

For the right user, this product is absolutely worth it. If your primary need is fast, reliable printing for documents and the occasional 11×17 output, the Brother MFC-J5855DW offers exceptional value. The long-lasting ink, speedy performance, and sturdy build make it a powerful tool for a home office or small business. However, its value plummets if your workflow depends on duplex or 11×17 scanning. The absence of these key features is a major deal-breaker that leaves many users feeling misled.

❓ FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

  • Can the Brother MFC-J5855DW scan 11×17 documents?
No, it cannot. The scanner glass and the automatic document feeder (ADF) are limited to a maximum of legal-size paper (8.5″ x 14″).
  • Does this printer scan both sides of a page automatically?
No, it does not support duplex (2-sided) scanning. You must manually flip the pages to scan both sides.
  • Is this printer easy to connect to Wi-Fi?
Many users find the Wi-Fi setup to be very easy and the connection stable. However, a significant number of users have reported issues with the printer frequently going offline, so the experience can be inconsistent.
  • How long does the ink really last?
The “up to 1-year of ink” claim is based on an average print volume. For users with moderate printing needs, the included starter cartridges can last for many months, offering excellent value. However, heavy users or those who print a lot of color graphics will go through ink much faster.

LOVE THIS PRINTER

After two recent attempts with failed Canon printers that were pieces of junk (and for years I did have a Canon printer I really liked until it just plain wore out), this Brother printer is such a relief! It is very attractive. It does have a larger footprint than many inkjets, but it feels well made and not flimsly like the Canons. I don’t mind the size, but if space is an issue, that could be a consideration. Out of the box WiFi wireless hook was easy to accomplish, as was installation of the scan software and wireless connection to printer. Very good directions. This printer has a very deep paper tray so unlike the Canon I don’t have to keep reloading paper all the time. This printer prints so much faster than the Canons. I realize it has only been a couple of weeks, but I truly love this printer. If things go south, I will provide an update – but as of now, I am beyond happy with this purchase. (Because of my bad experiences with Canon, I actually did buy the insurance protection on this one, just in case).

An Update Four Months Later: I still LOVE this printer. Quality! Unbelievable speed of printer and scanner saves so much time! I will never go back to Canon or HP cheapo printers. I am definitely now part of the Brother Printer Family. Black ink has been replaced once (and I print a LOT) and color ink still half full. Paper tray holds so much paper so not constantly having to reload paper. Nice quality print. I actually can not say enough good things about this printer after four months of fairly hard use.

An Update Almost Ten Months Later: I still LOVE this printer! I recently ran into an issue with the document feeder making dark lines on scans. I found an easy-to-understand tutorial from Brother on how to solve this issue – and yes, it worked. I print and also scan a lot, and this printer handles it all with ease. SO incredibly happy I decided to try this printer even though I had no prior knowledge of Brother products. Very strong 10 out of 10.

Good but lacks two sided scanning and the name is misleading

I admit it: I have an abnormal attraction to printers. I’ve owned probably three dozen of them: Color laser, black and white laser, large format inkjet, regular inkjet, portable, thermal label printer,….I go as far back as dot-matrix printers (although I didn’t own any of the Okidata printers that were famous for catching fire). So I know a bit about them and put them through their paces pretty well.

But when I saw this one, I made a huge wrong assumption: I assumed INKvestment tank meant it was the kind of printer that used ink tanks in place of cartridges . Wrong. Still uses cartridges – although the ones that come with the printer say they contain up to a year’s worth of ink (estimated at 300 pages a month). So I was a bit disappointed when I pulled the thing from the box. Hmm…I have to learn to read better up front. But it feels a bit like its misrepresentation done on purpose…

IN THE BOX: Printer, phone cable for FAX setup, 4 ink cartridges.

SIZE AND CAPABILITIES: This is a physically big printer. It will scan 8.5″ x 11″ sheets but can print up to 11″ x 17″ sheets. I’m not a huge fan of mismatched scanning and printing capabilities: I like my large format printing matched to large format copying or scanning.

This printer has a solid build and feels substantial. It offers one built-in paper tray and a back direct feed drawer that can handle 11″ x 17″ paper

SETUP: Easy as far as printers go. Install the ink cartridges. Connect it to the wireless. Install the software drivers on the computer. Print. It all went very easily, more than some of the other printers I’ve recently tried to install. Point: Brother. I’m out of space in my computer room, so I set this up in an adjoining bedroom. I read the instructions and followed them. Everything worked fine.

USE – PRINTING: Printing in standard mode on 20 lb copy paper, the thing is really speedy and the quality is good. Best photo quality on a 4″ x 6″ through the back feed input looks great although the paper feed pulled the paper in slightly cockeyed.

USE – SCANNING: I was able to choose between scanning to the computer or a USB stick. Full page scans went fast…just a few seconds for 200 DPI and about 12 seconds for a 600 DPI scan in color. I could choose between PDF and JPG in color, greyscale or B&W, but could not choose a quality setting on the JPG compression itself. At 600 DPI and viewing at100% on the screen, there is some obvious artifacting but probably not detrimental to a print. Color reproduction was very good.

The biggest flaw here is the lack of two-sided scanning. At this price, the scanner should have that built-in. Especially with the 8.5″ x 11″ scanner.

USE – FAX: Kind of useless (I guess) now that I don’t have a home phone line. I wonder if I could set this up through my cell phone somehow…

EVALUATION: Except for the tricky naming that makes me believe that this is a ink TANK solution, this is a good general-purpose home-type printer. It has a solid build but lacks what it should have at this price point for a BUSINESS SCANNER: a two-sided scanning option. That and the fact that it refers to tank but offers cartridges instead seems misleading and lowers my score for an otherwise good printer.

OMG!!! REALLY SLOW COLOR PRINTING!!!!!

It took a long time to set up. The physical machine was easy enough to set up and add the ink, but then you need to connect it to your computer, egt updates, download software, etc, which all takes time. It was not difficult, compared to what I went thought with my numerous Canon printers. The print quality is very good and the photo print was nice…actually the best I have seen from any printer that I have owned. But the issues I have had so far:
1. I set it to print just one copy of a letter and it printed 2 copies
2. I had a lot of trouble printing envelopes. I had to cancel the print job and then it printed the envelopes.
3. I tried to get help from Brother. Phone: “please wait 20 minutes”, chat: I had to keep asking if anyone was there. I suppose the techs are on many chats at the same time.

I will attemp to see what tricks I must do to get it to print the correct number of copies and what magic needs to be done to print envelopes and report back.

Update: I need to print an image 1.7 times larger on 2 or more sheets. It seems to be impossible to do on this printer! I have tried for an hour, no luck. It will print a gigantic enlargement of 4 sheets, but not what I need. USELESS. I will keep trying, or will return. I was able to do it with my Canon. Maybe I will not toss the Canon! Update: got it work using Foxit PDF to print. You need to convert the image to PDF, then open with Foxit, then use Foxit to control the printing. Whew!!!
And more: I often print duplex. The pages shoot out of the machine quickly but all over the placeand not in order. As new sheets come out, some shoot over the previous sheets and some slide under, so in the end, I have to make a stack of printed sheets and try to put them in order. Yes, they print faster than my Canon, but then I have to waste time putting them in order. If anyone knows how to fix this, please reply.

Right now I am trying to print 30 color copies…..it’s printing about 1 page in 3 minutes!!!!! Normal quality, nothing special…VERY VERY SLOW. (I found that you much uncheck the no margins box)

FURTHER UPDATE AFTER ABOUT 4 MONTHS: the black is running low already. One year? NOPE! and.. THE INK IS VERY EXPENSIVE! Genuine Brother: a set of all 4 costs about $130!!! I will go with genuine because buying the generics has cost me a few printers because the print heads get ruined.

update: colors ran out at 8 months; had to buy new, small inks for $70 because no one had the XL size. All-in-all, I’m getting used to the printer and I like it. Went from 1 star to 3.

Fantastic printer, so happy with this purchase!

We were shopping for a new home printer and at first bought a Canon. After 2 hours on the phone with customer service and another hour trying to set it up ourselves, we gave up and returned it. Wouldn’t connect to the wifi, wouldn’t connect to our computers, issues issues issues.

We bought this Brother as a second try and just set it up in 10 minutes, literally connected to the wifi, our phones and computers in minutes. Also printed this photo quickly from my phone, the quality is impressive. Full sheet color took about 30 seconds, black and white in like 2.

Absolutely 5 stars, would buy again and recommend for anyone looking for an easy to set up home/small business printer.

Very good printer and scanner. Superior tech support from Brother.

This was my first new printer in several years, and my first tank printer. It does use cartridges, though they are huge compared to what I had before. Print quality is very good, more than adequate for my needs. It is FAST! I was astounded at how quickly it will print out a page, even in full color.

Getting it set up was a bit of a challenge for me, since unlike my previous printers, all of the software has to be downloaded and all we have is slow DSL. I connected it to my wife’s computer with a USB cable, and that was pretty straightforward. Connecting it to wi-fi was easy, though I had to scan the network several times. When connecting to my computer in another room, I was unable to add it in Windows, so I had to download the software and use that to connect to it. Windows could find it on my network, but kept asking for a WPS PIN for the printer, which apparently does not exist.

I called Brother tech support twice with questions that I could not find answers to in the manual, and they were very courteous and knowledgeable. Much better than most help desks that I have dealt with.
Online documentation leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion, but the superior tech support makes up for that.

I may update this review after I’ve had more experience with this unit, but so far I am quite happy with it.

Constantly clogged printheads out of the box, total trash–STAY AWAY!!!

!!PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK!!

I got this printer on 7/30/2023 & at first it was okay, but got jammed almost every time I tried to use *regular freaking cardstock* (a problem mentioned in other reviews). I have been using it a lot more over the past week and FAR more than half of the ink’s supposed huge printing capacity has been used in cleaning the nozzles *EVERY time* I try to print something now! IT IS INFURIATING!

If I had to guess I’d say more like 75% of the ink has gone to cleaning, 15%ish to bad printouts, with the number of available copies reduced by 100 pages or more each time I have to clean it, & now it won’t even print black on a regular piece of paper or colors on the highest quality setting! Absolute piece of junk & I guess no one has mentioned this in their reviews as often as other issues because they hadn’t used it long enough yet. It never set for more than a few days without being used (an issue which can clog printheads) and I am still using the manufacturer’s ink that came with the printer! I am certain Amazon is messing with the ratings on this trash, there is no way they aren’t .

!!PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK!!

Setup process – Are you kidding me?

Have not even been able to print yet, but the setup process is archaic and confused. The icon to connect to the network is tiny and hard to see, but once connected to my router I had to go to Brother’s website to get the setup software and provide the long model number. Then it wanted to update the firmware, for which I had to get the password off the back of the machine. Oh, and it had the “if you can’t find it contact your network administrator”. They seriously think that the most common use of this printer is in an office with an IT department? The best part was when the firmware updated it rebooted my entire machine with no warning. Lost last minute data and the web pages I had been working on. When will these companies learn to actually test and get feedback on their setup process in the real world?
Once I use the printer I hope that I can raise my rating a bit, since I bought this Brother printer to get away from the HP scam of printer ink sales. We shall see…

Nighttime possession.

After set up and printing a few things to make sure it worked, I turned it off my new printer and forgot about it til the middle of the night when I was awaken by strange noises. The click, clacking of the printer seeming to try and print something, Neen thought it was OFF. I finally had to unplug it to get it to stop. I left it unplugged the rest of the night and through all of the next before plugging it in again. That night it happened again. My printer was possessed.
I called Bother and they quickly arranged for a new replacement to be sent. Unfortunately, this one was broken in a different way. It wouldn’t print properly, and after literally hours on the phone, with tech services at Brother, and with several different reps we still couldn’t get it to work properly. So I ended up sending this one back too. It’s been 2 1/2 weeks and I’m still waiting for my refund, so I guess I’ll have to call them again. But I’m putting it off, because every time I’ve had to call it’s been at least a 25 min or more wait for a rep. The last time it was over 45 minutes. That’s not great customer service in my opinion, even thought they were fast with the first replacement. They need more phone help.
If you buy a Brother printer, I hope you have better luck than I did.

GypsieBlueNovember 2, 2022

very disappointing

This printer/ MFC is terrible. The print quality is dull, blacks are grey, blues, and other colors are faded and not bright. I have printed over 1100 copies on this machine since I received it and run diagnostics and called the help desk, but no one can help me. I expected so much more from brother machine. It prints very slowly – taking over 2 mins to print 14 pages, not the 22 pages per min it claims. It doesn’t perform as advertised/ promoted. I wish I had thought to return this item earlier. It is basically a very expensive paperweight to me now. I would never recommend this item to anyone – unless I wanted to frustrate them.

First impressions, easy setup and a tip

Unpack, plug in, load paper, load print tanks. Takes a bit for it to wake up and recognize the tanks. From there print a test page, all OK. It then searches and finds your local network. Log in. Go to computer, remove old printer as default and search for new device. That’s pretty much it so computer and printer get along fine.
TIP: before you set up the printer there is a default password on the back of it. Write that down. It will ask you to change it if you want to prevent unauthorized access. The printer will keep asking you if you want to change it. I just didn’t want to move it (its heavy) so I’ll tend to it later. Prints quickly and pretty quietly but the scan part seemed a little slow.

I want to print 11 x 17 from the auxiliary paper tray. I set the tray to auto-recognize but couldn’t verify as I don’t have any 11 x 17 paper at the moment. We’ll see if I did it right. If not, pretty sure the machine will tell me about it.
