The Brother MFC-L2900DW is a compact, monochrome laser printer that has earned a strong reputation among users for its reliability, speed, and versatility. Designed for both home offices and small businesses, this all-in-one printer offers printing, scanning, copying, and faxing capabilities, making it a versatile tool for a wide range of tasks. Customers frequently praise its fast printing speeds, ease of setup, and affordable operating costs, which make it a cost-effective choice for high-volume printing needs.

Many users highlight the printer’s wireless connectivity as a standout feature, allowing them to print from multiple devices, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops. The automatic duplex printing and single-pass duplex scanning features are also highly appreciated, as they save time and paper. Additionally, the compact design of the printer makes it a great fit for smaller workspaces, while the high-yield toner cartridges ensure low running costs over time.

However, the printer is not without its drawbacks. Some users have reported challenges with the initial setup, particularly when connecting to Wi-Fi or installing the Brother software. A few customers also expressed frustration with the lack of color printing, which can be a limitation for those who occasionally need color documents. Additionally, while the majority of users are satisfied with the printer’s performance, a small number have criticized Brother’s customer service, citing long wait times and difficulties resolving technical issues.

Despite these minor complaints, the Brother MFC-L2900DW has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with many users praising its durability, print quality, and ease of use. Whether you’re a small business owner, a remote worker, or a home user with high printing needs, this printer is a reliable and efficient choice.

PROS

  • Fast Printing Speeds: One of the most praised features of the Brother MFC-L2900DW is its impressive printing speed, which reaches up to 36 pages per minute (ppm). This makes it ideal for users who need to print large documents quickly. A customer shared, “It’s lightning fast! I can print a 50-page document in just a couple of minutes.”
  • Easy Setup: Many users found the setup process to be straightforward and user-friendly. The touchscreen interface and QR code setup make it easy to connect the printer to Wi-Fi and install the necessary software. One reviewer said, “I had it up and running in less than 15 minutes, even without reading the manual.”
  • Wireless Connectivity: The printer’s Wi-Fi compatibility allows users to print from a variety of devices, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops. This feature is particularly useful for users who need to print on the go. A user commented, “I love being able to print directly from my phone without needing to transfer files to my computer.”
  • Duplex Printing and Scanning: The automatic duplex printing and single-pass duplex scanning features are highly appreciated by users. These capabilities save time and paper, making the printer more efficient. One reviewer noted, “The double-sided printing is a game-changer. It’s so convenient and eco-friendly.”
  • Affordable Toner Costs: The high-yield toner cartridges offer a low cost per page, making the printer economical for long-term use. Many users appreciate the savings compared to inkjet printers. A customer shared, “The toner lasts forever, and it’s much cheaper than inkjet cartridges. I’ve saved so much money since switching to this printer.”
  • Compact Design: The printer’s compact size makes it a great fit for smaller workspaces. Despite its small footprint, it doesn’t compromise on functionality. One user said, “It fits perfectly on my desk without taking up too much space, and it still has all the features I need.”

CONS

  • No Color Printing: One of the most common complaints about the Brother MFC-L2900DW is its lack of color printing. While it excels in black-and-white printing, users who occasionally need color documents may find this limitation frustrating. A reviewer mentioned, “I wish it had color printing for some of my kids’ school projects. It’s the only downside for me.”
  • Initial Setup Challenges: Some users faced difficulties during the wireless setup and software installation. A few customers reported issues with connecting the printer to their Wi-Fi network or installing the Brother software. One user shared, “It took me a while to get it connected to my Wi-Fi, and the software felt a bit outdated.”
  • Customer Service Issues: A small number of users reported poor experiences with Brother’s customer service, citing long wait times and unresolved technical issues. One customer said, “I spent over two hours on hold, and the issue still wasn’t fixed. It was really frustrating.”
  • Loud Operation: While the printer is fast, some users noted that it can be noisy during operation. This is a common issue with laser printers, but it may be a concern for users who need a quieter environment. A reviewer mentioned, “It’s not unbearably loud, but you can definitely hear it printing.”
  • Limited Paper Tray Capacity: The 250-sheet paper tray is adequate for most users, but some found it insufficient for larger print jobs. One user commented, “I wish the tray could hold a full ream of paper. I have to refill it more often than I’d like.”

Who Should Buy?

Additionally, its affordable toner costs and compact design make it a practical option for those with limited space or budget constraints.

This printer is particularly well-suited for remote workers, students, and small business owners who need a reliable and efficient printing solution. However, if you require color printing or frequently print high-resolution images, this may not be the best fit for your needs. Credible HP Alternative

I replaced a 12 year old HP Laserjet with this Brother multifunction. The old HP, with a smaller form, printed faster and quieter. But it didn’t duplex, and I lost scanning ability years ago in my Apple Macintosh environment. From research into my defunct but list-active Mac user group Brother emerged as the most Mac friendly printing environment for this class of printer…so I assume/hope that they will maintain their scanning software for future OS compatibility.

Compared to a business class laser (I have a Ricoh Aficio color duplexing printer), this machine’s duplexing is slow and laborious. An unfair comparison in a way but I make it just to set expectations. The great news is that the 2900 and its brethren offer duplexing at a very reasonable price and that’s a win.

Setup is straightforward except choose your password wisely because the only way to edit it is to reset the machine to factory. Gimme a break! Using the onboard UI is mostly easy but logging into the device in a web browser will be more efficient plus it lets us see full ranges of settable options on a single large screen (your computer monitor).

We don’t fax often but wanted the ability since we’re aging and medicine still relies on faxing over email.

I’m not a heavy office user (retired) but as long as I was buying a new machine, having duplex auto document feeding to duplex printing feels like a potentially welcome ability. I suspect it’ll process relatively slowly but hey, this is not an office class machine.

All in all, with limited experience so far, the 2900 seems like good value for the cost.

Laserjet Quality

This printer is so much better than the inkjet our family struggled to keep running. The brother is quiet, and was truly plug and play. We got the admin set up and the print quality makes me wish I bought this years ago! Husband also has used it more than I have in the last month even though he said he never needed to print anything; the wireless print feature suckered him in. Printing from any location in the house is so convenient. Havent had any issues with jams, connectivity, or noise; this printer is a gem.

Excellent

Small office. I’ve been buying Canon all-in-ones for years. And replacing them frequently. They last 2-3 years. They are poorly made. The word jalopy comes to mind. This printer is excellent and well-made. Maybe because most Brother all-in-ones are made in Tennessee.

Loving it!

Have always had issues with printers, but this one worked immediately and did not cause any headaches.

Best printer/scanner/copier/(fax) for me!

Fast and quiet. Double sided scan and print. It is very fast so open paper catcher first. Stops quickly and quietly – my old brother took many minutes to quiet down. Prints black only, but that’s great for almost all I do. My wife has an Epson color ink jet for charts and portraits.
Easy to install especially if using usb plugin to get started. I couldn’t be happier, except for the control panel light on often and some online? activity. WiFi compatible, too. Other modes I don’t use.
Had to set a function for double sided as every print job always reverts to single sided. 2->1 and 1->2 takes some fiddling as not permanent setting or intuitive.

Brother laser printers are beasts

I previously owned a Brother HL-5170DN laser printer released in 2003. That beast was 21 years old. It still works, but I was finding the lack of remote printing to be a limitation, speed was slow by today’s standards, and the print quality was simply deteriorating. I also wanted to consolidate my separate scanner and printer with a sheet feed based scanner.

I purchased this Brother MFC-L2900DW because I wanted to combine printing, scanning, and copying with the ability to print from my iPhone and iPad as well as my computers. My requirements were duplex copying, scanning, and printing.

Setup was totally easy and so far this printer is working as expected with absolutely no problems just as the former Brother laser printer had done. Hope I get another 21 years out of this one.

When considering a printer, especially for home use, if you do not need color printing, a monochrome laser printer is totally the way to go. Much longer lasting and much lower supply costs.

Performs Well

Very pleased with the performance, design and features for the price, particularly the duplex print, copy, scan and fax capability. This printer replaced a MFC-L2740DW that was used for several years in a home office and performed reliably. The 2900 has a few new features including a larger LCD display and simplified wifi setup.

Versatile, efficient, impressive and reliable.

The Brother MFC-L2900DW is a versatile and efficient monochrome laser printer and it is perfect for our small office and home. It has many features we like so let me try to keep it short while I further explain.

This printer has a compact and sturdy design, so it is perfect for small spaces. Its sturdy build guarantees durability, while the control panel LCD screen provides easy navigation and operation.

This printer offers impressive print speeds of up to 36 pages per minute (ppm), so it is quick, efficient and quiet. The print quality is sharp and clear, with great resolution, and it works great with documents with a lot of text on them.

It is easy to connect in different ways including USB, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi and the wireless setup is very easy all I needed was the Wi-Fi password to link it and using the Brother application on my cell I was able to setup. It does seamless printing from various devices, including smartphones and tablets, via Brother’s Mobile Connect App.

This all-in-one device includes printing, scanning, copying, and faxing functionalities. The automatic document feeder is fast and since it has single pass duplex copy and scan it does just that, with one pass it copies and scans both sides, making it very efficient. The printer comes with a 250-sheet capacity paper tray so we do not need to refill the tray often.

The MFC-L2900DW is designed with cost efficiency in mind. It uses high-yield toner cartridges, which can significantly lower the cost per page. Additionally, the printer’s energy saving features contributes to reduced operational costs. And since our office prints a lot of documents and most are black and white this printer is the best choice for our small office because it is not only reliable and affordable to print, it also copies, scans and faxes.

It is fast with multi page copy, scan, and fax jobs and we really like that we can print from and scan to different cloud based apps using the touchscreen. The printer has an advanced security feature to keep my network safe too.

The Brother application on our computers is useful to do everything it even sends me to pages to help me out on how to do certain things such as how to scan. I can do most things from my computer without getting off my chair. I can also purchase supplies, photo print and have access to other tools.

Overall the printer does a great job, it is reliable and consistent. It is fast and gives high quality prints and best of all it is multifunction in case we want to print, scan, copy or fax. We are enjoying the wireless connectivity so we can move the printer around without needing to connect it via Ethernet or a USB cable yet they are available too. Using Brothers high yield toner is also the way to go, we do not

Brotherbeats them all!

I had to replace an older Brother multi-function monochrome laser printer (MFC-8690DW) and purchased a Canon as a replacement. After more than a week of battling with the installation (allegedly due to conflicts with both Windows and McAfee, according to the Canon techs I spoke with), I returned the Canon and bought this Brother MFC-L2900DW. The software installed smoothly, without any incidents, and has been working well without any problems. While a bit more expensive. it was worth the money. Brother mfc printers are highly reliable and easy to work with, and that’s from someone who has had owned several for over 15 years.
In short, you can’t go wrong with Brother!

worst customer service to work with

This product arrived and was easy to set up. However it quit working after 2 weeks. The problem was with the drum. Called and waited on hold with customers service over 2 hours worst service ever. Sent out a drum put in new drum printed 10 pages and the same problem. I did a live chat with customer service and after another 1 1/2 hours waiting on one to be available they sent me a new one printer without the drum in the unit. I tried to put the drum they sent as a replacement into the new printer and could not even get this one to print anything. This printer is a piece of junk and I would not recommend buying a brother unless you have over 2 hours to sit on hold to work with customer service.
