It has a pretty good form factor for a portable printer. It feels like a really old school “laptop” from the 80s. It is plenty fast for basic page printing. The price? It’s kind of up there for an inkjet printer, but it’s the portable aspect that drives the price. Mine didn’t come with a battery, but it’s nice to know it’s possible.
I use Canon cameras professionally, and what is true there is just as true here. Their grip on software and UI is tenuous at best. Their software has always felt clumsy and years behind the market. Always. The setup instructions are not great, particularly that they push you towards hooking up to your wifi at home rather than your phone or tablet or whatever, which is strange given the portable nature of the marketing. The on screen wireless setup will direct you to input your wifi password. That’s great, but I got this to print from our phones downstairs so we didn’t have to run upstairs every time something printed. If this is what you need it for, you have to back out of that and choose another path. That in itself was fairly straightforward. You just have to have the app. Once you do have the app, the printer generates a QR code to connect. That part is wonderful. It just works.
You don’t get many pages out of an ink cartridge and they are quite expensive, so this shouldn’t be a primary printer unless you don’t do a lot of printing at all. On another note, the print head is separate from the printer itself (you install it before the cartridge), so that is wonderful. If the head clogs permanently, you just pop the old one out and pop in a new one.

Small footprint, decent print quality

Her primary needs are for document printing, but she wanted a small printer that didn’t take up a lot of space and bonus if it was portable. I have not purchased the battery to fulfill the last criteria, but having that potential was instrumental in my decision to choose this model. I’ve been happy with the print quality and durability of my current Canon printer, so that was also a factor.
This model, the TR160, has top down paper feed. Controls are straightforward. There is a quick start guide that walks through the set up process for installing the printer head and ink cartridges. This was easy with the visual guide, but it did require some time to fully complete. I wish there were audio instructions as well, as the web instructions were silent. Once the set up was complete, it moved into connectivity. I chose to connect to my phone and used the Canon Print app to print a picture from my photos album and a document from my files. The app’s interface is intuitive and worked great, however there are some limitations in the app. For example, if you want to print 4×6, you need to use that size paper. I can’t figure out a way to print two 5×7 images on one letter sized piece of paper with the options in the app. For my daughter’s use, that will likely never be a problem. For someone who wants to print images, you might have a better user experience with more flexible options when connection through a computer.
The size of this printer is great- it is smaller than a standard laptop and just a few inches thick. It is somewhat heavy though, and while it would be great to use in a car, I don’t think I’d want to carry it in a backpack or tote bag every day. There are smaller, more portable printers available if on the go printing is your main priority. But to occasionally carry into a cafe, or client’s office, this would be fine.
My prints were on basic quality, plain printer paper. -

I don’t print a lot, but when I do need something printed I don’t want to look for an officer center. I just want to print the document and move on. Bringing my printer from home wasn’t really an option due to size.
I saw this printer advertised and decided to give it a try. So glad I did, it is perfect! Setup was very straight forward. I was printing in no time. The paper capacity of this printer isn’t near my bigger printer at home and it is little bit no frills. (One sided printing.) but the quality of printing is definitely on point and you can’t beat the portability of this printer. I can pack it in my carry-on and easily take it with me. Canon even makes a battery pack for this printer to truly take it anywhere. (I haven’t tried that though.)
Bottom line, if space is tight, but you still need to print, this a great solution. This is an easy 5 out of 5 stars!
