Customer Reviews Summary

The Canon PIXMA TS702a Wireless Photo Printer has garnered a wide range of reviews, highlighting its versatility and performance. Customers appreciate its excellent print quality, which is particularly notable for both text documents and photos. Many users utilize this printer for edible image printing, citing sharp, vibrant images on frosting sheets and wafer paper. The device’s ability to handle diverse printing materials, including cardstock, CDs/DVDs, and high-quality photo paper, adds to its appeal. Additionally, the printer’s wireless capabilities and compatibility with modern devices like smartphones and tablets have been commended, allowing for easy integration into various workflows.

However, not all feedback is positive. Setup challenges are a recurring theme, with customers often struggling to connect the printer to Wi-Fi or their devices. The lack of a backlit LCD screen further complicates the process, as some users resorted to using flashlights to navigate the printer’s settings. Despite these issues, many reviewers ultimately found the printer’s performance to outweigh its initial difficulties, especially given its competitive price point. Once set up, the printer’s reliability and ability to produce consistent, high-quality prints left a lasting impression on most users.

The printer’s compact size and dual paper feeding options (top and bottom) are well-received features. This design not only saves space but also enhances user convenience, particularly for individuals with varied printing needs. However, complaints about the device’s ink consumption and frequent error messages have been noted. Several users also mentioned the need for improved software support and more intuitive troubleshooting guides to address common errors. Overall, the Canon PIXMA TS702a is seen as a solid choice for home and small business use, particularly for specialized needs like edible printing or printing on unique materials.

PROS

  • Excellent Print Quality: Customers consistently praise the sharp and vibrant output, especially for photos and edible images. One user shared, “The images are amazing and very detailed, perfect for my cake business.” The high resolution ensures that even intricate details are rendered beautifully, making it ideal for professional projects.
  • Versatile Media Handling: The printer supports various materials, including cardstock, CDs/DVDs, and frosting sheets, making it ideal for specialized projects. This flexibility allows users to experiment with different printing techniques and expand their creative capabilities.
  • Compact Design: Its small footprint allows it to fit into tight spaces, making it a practical choice for home offices or small businesses. Users frequently highlight how it fits seamlessly into crowded workspaces without compromising functionality.
  • Dual Paper Feeding Options: The ability to load paper from both the top and bottom trays offers flexibility for different printing needs. This feature is particularly useful for multitasking, enabling users to switch between media types without interruption.
  • Affordable Price: Many users find the printer’s price reasonable for the features it offers. “Great value for the money,” commented one reviewer. Its cost-effectiveness extends to its relatively low maintenance requirements compared to other printers in its class.

CONS

  • Difficult Setup Process: Numerous reviewers mentioned challenges during installation, particularly with Wi-Fi connectivity. One frustrated user said, “It took me hours to figure out how to connect it to my router.” This issue often stems from unclear instructions and limited on-screen guidance.
  • Non-Backlit LCD Screen: The small, unlit display is a common complaint, with several users needing additional lighting to read it. This design flaw detracts from the user experience, especially in low-light environments.
  • High Ink Consumption: Some customers observed that the printer consumes ink quickly, especially for high-quality prints. Users who frequently print photos or detailed graphics may find themselves replacing cartridges more often than expected.
  • Frequent Error Messages: Issues such as paper misfeeds or connectivity errors disrupt the user experience. Many users expressed frustration at the lack of clear solutions provided in the manual or online resources.
  • Slow Duplex Printing: Printing on both sides of the paper is noticeably slow, which might not suit users with high-volume needs. For those relying on efficient printing for office tasks, this can be a significant drawback.

Got to use as an edible image printer

So far so good with this printer.
Setup was easy.
My first print was easy.
I wish the app included for setup was as detailed as other printer apps where you can edit how you need your image to print, but that’s not a huge deal.
I agree with others, it does need a backlit screen that makes it difficult to use.
I ordered wafer paper 8.5×11 and the “mayway 281 XXL” edible ink cartridges and Wala! I’ve got edible images for cakes. It prints very fast, I was surprised.
I think for the cost, I would recommend this printer.
I’ll update if I have any issues but I hope I don’t. ??

Love this as an edible image printer!

Delivery was on time. Set up was incredibly easy. I chose not to include my phone in the set up as I prefer to edit and manipulate images on my laptop before printing. Installing ink – again no problem. I printed images for the first time today for a construction theme cake. They are BEAUTIFUL and look exactly the same as the original which I printed from my hp printer on paper. Print quality is excellent. Incredible value under $100! I’m so happy I made this purchase for unlimited cake design possibilities.

Perfect for my edible image printing

I purchased this printer to print edible images for my cakes!! Instead of using the cartridges that came with the printer, I purchased separate cartridges with edible ink and this printer has nearly paid itself off already!! It is absolutely perfect in size, quality, speed and especially that it’s Bluetooth!!!! I highly suggest this printer for any baker wanting to print edible images.

So far, so good!!! Update: better and better

I bought this printer mainly for printing ID cards using brainstorm’s MP tray. It works beautifully; see the video. The print is almost perfect, with the exception of a little Cyan ink spill on top of the reverse side (not shown). I also printed some 5×7 photos, and they are slightly better than my HP OfficeJet 3830. It appears that this printer prints with a higher resolution. To be fair, I was using the Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II on both printers.

Here are the bad parts Canon can improve (if they care):
1. The LED/LCD screen is almost NOT readable! I thought I had received a lemon and was about ready to return it. Now I can get by with a flashlight, hahaha!
2. The WiFi setup instructions suck, big time! Canon video instruction also sucks! I ended up watching a video that shows how you can connect it with onscreen instructions to do it manually. P.S. the setup process does not work with dual-band WiFi. Just spend a minute to do it manually by entering the password for your WiFi, a minor hassle.

Other than that, the printer is excellent (so far)!
1. Good print quality
2. Large input tray, plus top loading
3. Multipurpose tray for CD (included) and ID badge from the third party
4. Relatively fast
5. Cheap (not sure about the ink yet)

Update (02-08-23): I tested it with 120 lbs 325 GSM cardstock, and amazingly it works beautifully! Settings: 5×7, rear tray, cardstock, best quality. Another pleasant surprise – the printer prints 2-sided documents pretty fast. The draft quality looks fantastic. Lastly, the bundled ink lasts for a long time. I printed 10+ full-color 5×7 photos, and it is still 1/3 being used. Will see.

If you are not 100% happy with any desktop inkjet printers that are 3 years or older, recycle them and get this one. 🙂 P.S. this may be true for any newer models, Epson, HP, Brother, etc. Technology is just making them so much better nowadays. I chose Canon because of its multipurpose tray.

Bought for edible images

I bought this for edible images and bought frosting sheets and edible ink and made really cute cookies on my first try. I’m giving 5 stars because the printer has done exactly what I bought it to do. So far so good as it relates to results, but I did have a little trouble setting it up and connecting it wirelessly to my android which is what I have been printing from but I finally got it..BUT I still cant figure out how to get it to print from the top feeder no matter what I do and I feel I’ve done everything. It keeps making me feed from the lower tray. It’s a problem because edible sheets say to put them in the top loader. Even though I’m having to use the lower feeder the images are coming out pretty good.

Great.. but something’s weird

I have a Win 10 PC. The printer replaces my 4 year old iP7200 which stopped printing in color and problems with the paper rollers. The TS702a is an excellent printer in terms of print quality….once you get it installed.

The installation setup was puzzling. I carefully followed all the steps in the Getting Started booklet, downloaded the set-up file, clicked Start Setup and went through the motions, selecting UBS cable connection, but the driver installation failed. Next thing I know, the printer is printing out the alignment patterns. The little screen (why Canon couldn’t rig up a tiny backlight for illumination is beyond me) then went to normal configuration showing the 5 squares for each color. I had to add the printer to my Windows Devices directory in Settings and was able to print out a test page. However, the driver was not listed in the Control Panel-Programs directory. OK..let’s see what happens. I picked out a sample text from Documents, selected Print and, voila, out it came.

I decided to delete the printer from the Devices list and delete the downloaded setup software and start from scratch, this time setting it up for wireless connection to my router. Same thing… everything went well except the driver installation failed again. But, as before, I was able to operate the printer (after reinstalling it in the Devices directory), but the driver still was not listed in the Programs directory. Hey…if it works, let it be! I’ll be calling Canon tech support about all this.

Draft print speed is very good, but duplex printing is very slow. It takes a full 15 seconds to go from the end of printing on one side of the page to the start of printing on the other side. On my old iP7200, the cycle was completed in less than half the time. Very disappointing.

Finally, you have to remember to pull out the output tray before you print or you’ll get an error message on your monitor. With the iP7200, there’s no tray, but a door that opens automatically if you forgot to do it when you start to print. But the main thing is that if it prints text well and has good, accurate color graphics and photos, I’ll be happy.
