🗣️ Customers Say

Most users are highly satisfied with the Epson EcoTank ET-2980, praising its incredible ink efficiency and high-quality prints that save them significant money over time. However, a notable number of customers express frustration with initial setup difficulties, particularly with Wi-Fi connectivity and a lengthy ink initialization process.

Customer Reviews Summary

The Epson EcoTank ET-2980 receives overwhelmingly positive feedback from users, who frequently describe it as a game-changer for home and small office printing. The most celebrated feature is its supertank ink system, which eliminates the need for expensive and wasteful cartridges. Users consistently report that the printer comes with a generous amount of ink that lasts for a very long time—often years—delivering on its promise of significant cost savings and environmental benefits. The ability to visually check ink levels is another highly appreciated design choice, removing the guesswork often associated with traditional printers.

In terms of performance, the printer is widely praised for its excellent print quality. Both black-and-white documents and color prints are described as crisp, sharp, and vibrant. Many users, including homeschool parents and small business owners, note that it handles a variety of paper types well, including cardstock and photo paper, producing professional-looking results. The automatic duplex printing is another key feature that users love for its convenience and paper-saving benefits. The printer’s speed is generally considered fast for everyday tasks, easily handling multi-page documents and school assignments.

Despite the high praise, some users report significant challenges, primarily during the initial setup. The most common complaints involve difficulties connecting the printer to a Wi-Fi network and a setup process that can be time-consuming, sometimes taking over 30 minutes. The small size of the LCD screen is also a frequent point of criticism, with some finding it hard to read and navigate. While most users find the Epson Smart Panel App helpful for setup and operation, a few have experienced glitches or found it confusing. These initial hurdles, however, are reported as a one-time issue for most, with the printer performing reliably once fully configured.

✅ What Are the Advantages of This Product?

  • Massive Ink Savings and Efficiency: The most significant advantage highlighted by nearly every positive review is the EcoTank system. Users are thrilled to move away from expensive ink cartridges, with many stating the included ink bottles will last for years. This feature not only offers incredible value but is also seen as more environmentally friendly, reducing plastic waste significantly.
  • High-Quality, Versatile Printing: Customers consistently praise the crisp, vibrant, and professional-quality prints for both text and images. The printer performs well on various media, including standard paper, cardstock, and glossy photo paper. The addition of automatic double-sided printing is a frequently mentioned benefit that saves paper and adds convenience for users printing multi-page documents.
  • Modern Design and User-Friendly Features: The printer’s sleek, compact, and modern design is a common point of praise, with many users noting that it fits well in their home office. Features like the easy, mess-free ink refilling process, the ability to see ink levels at a glance, and the convenience of the Epson Smart Panel App for wireless printing from phones and laptops make it a user-friendly choice for families and professionals alike.

❌ What Are the Disadvantages of This Product?

  • Difficult and Lengthy Initial Setup: A recurring complaint is the frustrating and time-consuming setup process. Several users reported spending over 30 minutes trying to connect the printer to their Wi-Fi network, with some experiencing repeated failures. This initial hurdle proved to be a major source of frustration for some buyers, while the 11-minute ink initialization process also caught many by surprise and was seen as excessively long.
  • Small and Hard-to-Read LCD Screen: The printer’s small LCD screen is a significant pain point for many customers. They find it difficult to read and navigate, which complicates the setup process and makes it challenging to change settings directly from the device. Some users mentioned needing a flashlight to see the display properly, relying heavily on the mobile app instead.
  • Paper Handling and Design Flaws: Some users expressed disappointment with the paper handling, specifically the rear-loading paper tray. Unlike printers with an internal cassette, this design leaves paper exposed and can take up more space. Additionally, a few users reported frequent paper jams, especially when printing larger, double-sided documents, which caused significant frustration.

⚖️ How Does This Product Compare to Other Options?

Several users who switched from other brands, particularly HP, found the Epson EcoTank ET-2980 to be a major upgrade. The primary point of comparison is the ink system. Former HP users expressed frustration with the high cost of cartridges and subscription models, praising the EcoTank for its long-term value and massive ink capacity. However, some former HP users felt their previous printers offered superior print quality and a less ink-intensive setup. This suggests that for users prioritizing absolute print quality over long-term ink costs, some competitors might still hold an edge. Another user who replaced a Brother laser printer was impressed with the Epson’s color capabilities and efficient processes.

🎯 Is This Product Right for You?

Based on user feedback, the Epson EcoTank ET-2980 is an ideal choice for home users, families with school-aged children, homeschoolers, and small business owners who print frequently and want to minimize long-term ink costs. Its ability to produce high-quality color documents, photos, and crafts makes it highly versatile. However, users who are not tech-savvy or have low patience for a potentially complex setup process may find it frustrating. It is also less suitable for those who need to print very large, multi-page documents regularly due to potential paper jamming issues.

⚠️ What Are the Most Common Problems?

The most frequently reported issues with the Epson EcoTank ET-2980 are Wi-Fi connectivity problems during setup, a slow and ink-consuming initialization process, and paper jams, particularly with double-sided printing. Some users also experienced “system error” messages that required a restart or, in worst-case scenarios, a full hardware replacement. The small, dim LCD screen is another common source of frustration, making it difficult to operate the printer without the mobile app.

🏗️ How Durable Is This Product?

Users have mixed feelings about the product’s durability. Many describe the printer as having a sleek, modern, and well-built feel, with components that seem sturdy. The automatic, motorized output tray was seen as a premium feature by some but a potential point of failure by others who worried about its long-term reliability. However, a key concern highlighted in negative reviews is the risk of early hardware failure. Some users reported critical issues like malfunctioning components or opaque ink windows within weeks of purchase, raising questions about its long-term reliability.

☎️ Customer Support & Warranty

User experiences with Epson’s customer support reveal a significant inconsistency in service quality. Some users who encountered technical issues found the support team helpful and competent, guiding them through troubleshooting steps effectively. However, others described the process as “painful and adversarial.” One user reported being asked to provide multiple photos and a credit card for a “free” warranty replacement after a hardware failure, which led them to return the product instead. This suggests that while support is available, the experience can be inconsistent.

🤔 Is This Product Worth It?

The overwhelming consensus from users is that the Epson EcoTank ET-2980 is absolutely worth it, provided you can get past the initial setup. The long-term savings on ink are so substantial that they outweigh the upfront cost and the initial setup headaches for most. Users who print regularly for school, work, or hobbies feel that the value, print quality, and convenience make it a smart investment that pays for itself over time.

❓ FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

  • How long does the ink that comes with the printer really last?
Many users confirm that the included ink lasts for a very long time, often for a year or more, even with regular printing. Epson claims it can last up to three years, and while long-term reviews are pending, initial usage suggests the ink is very efficient.
  • Is the printer difficult to set up?
This is a point of contention. While many users found the setup easy using the Epson Smart Panel App, a significant number reported difficulties, especially with connecting to Wi-Fi. The process can be time-consuming, so it’s best to set aside at least 30-45 minutes.
  • Can this printer handle cardstock and photo paper?
Yes, numerous users have successfully printed on heavier paper like cardstock and various types of photo paper, reporting excellent, high-quality results for crafts, school projects, and photos.
  • Does the printer come with a USB cable?
No, the printer does not include a USB cable. If you plan to connect it directly to a computer, you will need to purchase a USB-B cable separately.

Theoretically great – But a Failure

Bought an Epson ET-2988. I love the concept of ink cost savings. However, the overall product and customer experience was unacceptable and I’ve returned it. I’ll buy another brand.
I used the app for setup, updated the firmware, printed a test page, and registered the product through the app. Despite this, on a regular basis the printer would not print and the screen said, “Printer restarted due to a system error”. I would unplug it and restart it and it would work fine – for a single print job, then the error returned and it would not print. I checked the Epson troubleshooting info and knowledge base and found no steps I hadn’t already taken. I contacted Epson tech support. That form includes a field asking for the specific error message being displayed and I entered it. Despite this, the response I got from Epson asked me to provide a photo of the same thing. That’s silly, but I did it. I then got a response telling me I needed to call live tech support. I did that. After providing the serial number (for my registered product) and recapping everything I already had listed in the email, the tech support person said that this was a “hardware failure”.
The process they laid out for me was this…1) Take photos of the printer, the ink tanks, the receipt, the serial number and email them; 2) Call to review them and confirm warranty status; 3) If I pass this check then I would qualify for a replacement printer, but would have to provide a credit card before they would ship my “free” replacement printer. My solution was to tell them I was returning the printer to Costco and I wouldn’t bother with Epson again. I may have had a lemon, but their process was painful and adversarial, so I won’t buy from them again.

Slow setup, poor quality prints, wasted ink

Printer does print, but there are much better options out there.

Setup: It took over 45 minutes to set this printer up! There was an initialization step that took 11 minutes alone and it took just under 10 minutes to get it to connect to my Wi-Fi. Strange that this was the time it expected to take (there was a countdown clock), it wasn’t because I was having trouble. The scanner alignment step also failed, and I had to redo it.

Print Quality: Very mediocre. When it printed the alignment page, I thought something was wrong because it was such bad quality, so I printed a second. It looked the same. When I compare it to my old HP Smart Tank, the HP printer has MUCH better print quality.

Ink: I was surprised to see that setting up the printer wasted about a quarter of my ink! I’m wondering how many years of ink I am really going to get from this bottle….

Firmware: The instructions told me not to accept the update during setup and to do it from my phone afterwards. However, when I go into the app and try to update it post-setup, it fails every time. Not sure what’s going on, but hoping it eventually updates.

I think I will stick with HP in the future – they have better quality prints, and the setup doesn’t drain your ink…

Good for basic needs

I really wanted to love this printer. I received this printer through Stellar Reviews to test out the product! It has a modern look, easy-ish to set-up and prepare for printing, and I could print things from my phone! However, when I started to print various items, it was not as smooth. It did very well with printing documents with not a lot of pages. If you only print things occasionally, this would be the printer to use. But, I was wanting to print a larger document, double-sided, and I can’t remember how many times it jammed up it was so many. It was about a 150-page document, and it took a lot of time to get it printed. I ended up just printing it single-sided just to get it done because I didn’t have time to do it anymore! I found during this process that it isn’t easy to print a range of pages. You have to go through the whole document and pick and choose which pages you want to print. I thought it was cool you could see all the pages (this is on an app on your phone) but when it was a larger document, it wasn’t as convenient. I did think that the amount of ink that comes with it was great. I did find that the LCD screen on the printer was exceptionally small and hard to read at times. Overall, I think it is great, I just don’t love how challenging it was to do double-sided.

Print great pictures and allows for duplix printing.

I like the print quality, however, the LCD screen is too small to be usefull. Fortunately, the Epsom Smart Panel app makes most funtions easy to accomplish.

Great printer

This printer was incredibly easy to set up. The step by step illustrated instructions were very detailed and the app also assisted with the set up to make it very painless. Filling the ink cartridges was also really easy and mess free! I was skeptical about spilling ink but it didn’t spill at all. It prints colored pages beautifully and works well with thicker paper like cardstock. I’ve used almost every feature of this printer and each exceed my expectations. It’s a great printer and I will be recommending to friends and family. 10/10
I received this product in return for my review from Stellar. My opinions are all my own.

print your heart out

It’s been a while since I’ve had a new printer. My old one worked but was clunky and finicky. I was glad to unbox the Epson EcoTank ET-2980 to discover how easy it was to set up. It was straightforward and directions were easy to follow. After downloading the app, it found the printer right away. I love that you could choose your layout (tiles or display cards) and which features were on your app home screen. The panel on the printer is also pretty easy to use.
I’ve printed a couple of things (black and white pages for my kids to color and a colorful page for them to follow) and then copied them to start using the printer and everything has come out crisp.
The printer came with a lot of ink and it will be great that it should last a long time! I love that you can see how much you have left easily. I tend to be the one who definitely needs to print something and remember my old printer is out of ink causing me to be in a bind.
The printer itself looks sleek on my bookcase in my home office / flex room and doesn’t take up too much space. This is a great printer and I’m looking forward to putting it to work!
Thanks to Stellar for allowing me to test the printer in exchange for my review.

Easy to set up and easy to use

Thanks to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for providing me with this printer.
It arrived during a home disaster, and I honestly dreaded getting it set up. But we needed to print some things for insurance, so I pulled it out of the box. To my surprise, set up was a breeze! I was quickly printing the documents we needed without any trouble, and the quality was great.

Worthwhile long term investment

A printer is a must-have in my life- I work from home, home school, and have toddlers who consistently want to draw, color, or craft. The EcoTanks from Epson have been something I have seen recommended by other home school moms for the past few years, and I was beyond stoked to get a chance to try one for myself thanks to the Stellar Product Testing Panel. This printer absolutely lived up to to all the hype.
First, I love the way it looks. It is so aesthetically pleasing- solid white, with just a sleek (yet functional!) LED button control panel. The window where the inks can be seen is also ridiculously amazing as it makes it incredibly simple to check your ink levels.
Speaking of the ink levels—refilling this is absolutely one of my favorite things. The refill ink is incredibly cost efficient, and seems to last for a long while. I’ve not even gotten close to needing to refill yet! When you’re setting up the printer, make sure you read the instructions around installing the ink carefully. At first I thought these were squeezy bottles- they are not! Thankfully both the printer and the instructions make this abundantly clear. Overall, the ink makes the value of this printer incredible.
The print quality seems pretty solid-–I haven’t seen any smudges, gaps, or bleeding so far, it’s been nothing but crisp and clear. It looks quite high quality.
Setup was a little troublesome, we did get an error message a couple of times, but after a couple tries, it cleared up and we were able to make it through. The color LCD screen is pretty nifty. My husband set up the entire printer with just the LCD screen, although I promptly downloaded the app myself and it made everything even more simple and fast.
With all that being said, this printer does miss the mark for me in one way. My previous printer had a drawer where the paper would live, and I miss that feature quite a bit. With 6 kiddos, someone is always trying to grab the printer paper. This printer keeps that printer paper top of mind for them since it is always visible in the tray. If this printer had a paper drawer to keep the printer out of sight (and out of mind), this would be the perfect printer. Even so, I have found this printer to still be a solid 5 stars.

AIO with Ink SuperTank!

BACKGROUND: For the past 3 years I have been using an Epson XP-5200 Inkjet AIO printer that has served its purpose of occasional printing, copying, and scanning. The only issues I have with the XP-5200 are the very expensive 222 ink cartridges that seem to just evaporate ink away with minimal use. Therefore, I was absolutely enthusiastic for the opportunity to receive and evaluate Epson’s EcoTank ET-2980 ink jet printer. I had been researching these types of “SuperTank” printers for quite a while and planned to purchase one the next time I needed to replace ink.

UNBOXING & SETUP: Very simple and no issues following the “Start Here – Installation Guide”. About a dozen small stripes of blue shipping tape to remove preparing the printer for the next step of ink installation. Following the well written and pictured guide, filling the four large ink reservoirs also went without encountering any issues. No spills, drips, or splatters of ink; nice! (Must mention that Epson’s pictures of their filled tank’s colorful black, cyan, magenta, and yellow ink levels, in reality, all appear a dark gray color.)

EPSON SOFTWARE: You have the option of downloading the required drivers and software by way of mobile phone (iOS or Android) or by way of a PC. Since I have no current need to use my phone for printing, I downloaded (ET2980_Lite_NA) by way of my laptop from Epson’s Support website. Again, zero issues encountered. And once the ET-2980 had internet connectivity, it proceeded to update its firmware.

APPLICATIONS: Referencing Window’s System Installed apps, 10 default Epson apps were installed. ET-2980 Series Guide, ET-2980 Series Printer Uninstall, Event Manager, Photo+, Printer Connection Checker, Scan 2, Scan PDF Extensions, SmartStart, Software Updater, and EpsonNet Print. In addition, six Epson ICONS were placed on the PC desktop.

SPEED: This is one of the fastest home printers at this price level. Monochrome at 15-PPM (Pagers Per Minute) and Color at 8-PPM. According to Epson, the ET-2980 is using heat-free MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) chips that are super-efficient and are designed to save energy while increasing speed. Got to love new technology!

B/W & COLOR PRINTING: Both Monochrome and Color plain paper print jobs are detailed and excellent looking using the default “Standard” print mode. With our XP-5200, I had to turn off color and set B&W to “draft” just to save ink. But I intend to use this ET-2980 in “Standard” print mode while monitoring ink usage. Only time will tell if I am able to attain a few years of occasional use before being required to purchase another set of four 502 ink bottles. Per Epson “Up to 3 years of ink included in the box.” We’ll see…

HIGH-QUALITY PHOTO PRINTING: I was able to print high-quality photos on select media that looked great. Initially, I did encounter multiple lines through my 4×6 photos. Evidently, my 4×6 Glossy 68# photo stock was not playing nice with this printer. But trying my last two sheets of 50# Glossy 8.5×11 worked beautifully without the lines I had been experiencing. Color prints were impressive and appeared fairly accurate to the original JPG.

EPSON SCAN 2: I thought I was thoroughly familiar with this application from my prior scanning pictures to JPEG’s for archival with my XP-5200. But something had changed with this app or printer because the JPEG scans of photos looked washed out and lifeless. A few additional tweaks were required in the default “Photo Mode” by way of the app’s “Advanced Settings”. I had to set “Unsharp Mask” to “Middle”, and turn on “Color Restoration”. Picture scans now appear great and similar to those from the XP-5200.

REAR LOADING PAPER: Although I recognized the ET-2980 was a “rear paper loading” only printer, lacking an internal paper feed tray/cassette, I did not anticipate how much additional space would be required to find a suitable printer placement location. The cabinet area where our XP-5200 printer was located would not accommodate this new ET-2980 and now it had to be relocated to another room. That is due to the paper media being raised up and rearward tilting requiring a lot of additional placement space (see pics).

Recognize that using an internal paper tray not only provides a scaled back overall footprint, it will keep your paper media flat avoiding curled paper edges. And I will also mention having a rear loading option does greatly assists with proper paper flow when using heavier stock, example photo-paper. I just wish this new printer had both options (tray & rear loading).

STAR RATING: After a week of putting the Epson ET-2980 Supertank Inkjet printer through its paces, it earned itself a solid 4-Star Rating. Now if you can live with the additional space requirements, due to not having a paper feed tray/cassette, then this ET-2980 printer should be an excellent option for your home printing and scanning requirements.

EPSON SUPPORT: A cannot complete this review without personally thanking Epson Support personnel who assisted with providing resolutions for my Color Photo lines and poor Scan issues. Communicating by phone with a representative, who was able to provide working solutions, was an easy and ultimately beneficial experience. A big “Job Well Done” goes out to Matt for his knowledge, willingness to listen, and finally for his overall professionalism.

Great for the Casual User

EcoTank is the way to go – period. This is my second EcoTank printer and I’m not sure I’d buy anything else at this point. I should specify that there was nothing wrong with my first EcoTank, my daughter declared it her own and this ET-2980 was a nice upgrade.

INK: The feature we appreciate most is not only the seemingly lower cost of the ink but also how long it lasts. We print several times a week and there’s no doubt we’ll get 3 years out of the included cartridges because that’s about how long the ink lasted in our first EcoTank.

PRINT SPEED / QUALITY: The Epson EcoTank ET-2980 Is plenty fast for a home office printer. It boasts 15 PPM for black and white while being able to also pump out 8 PPM in color. This is more than enough for a light workload printer and the quality is also great for photos in a pinch. We use the printer for anything from return shipping labels to birthday invites.

USE: Unfortunately, this style of printer needs more attention than one that feeds paper from a bottom tray. Being a top loader is probably the biggest downside. Top load printers notoriously have less capacity for paper and require the front tray to be extended in order to print. This style defiantly saves on space but I wouldn’t recommend leaving paper in the top feeder for extended periods due to the amount of dust that can collect – this can cause issues with the print head down the road. If you’re someone who doesn’t print often and you don’t mind getting the printer ready for the occasional print job – this printer is for you. If you want a printer that is ready to go any time of the day – you should look at printer with bottom feed capabilities.

DISPLAY: It’s not a deal breaker because most of the time you will use the Epson Smart Panel App but I wish Epson would have included a larger display. If you ever need to troubleshoot from the printer itself, you may find the display as frustrating as I did.

SUMMARY: If you are a casual printer that needs a scanner on occasion, the ET-2980 is a great option. It excels at the basics and the included app makes setup and setting management a breeze. The top load feeder is also great for heavier paper stock like photo paper and card stock.
