HP Color Laserjet Pro 3201dw Wireless Color Laser Printer
Customer Reviews Summary
The HP Color Laserjet Pro 3201dw Wireless Color Laser Printer is generally well-received by users for its ease of use, setup convenience, and fast printing capabilities. Many users praise its compact design that fits well in small office spaces, along with its wireless connectivity, which allows for easy printing from various devices including phones and laptops. Users highlight that the print quality is very good for text documents, making it a suitable choice for home offices, schoolwork, and small businesses. Some reviews mention that the printer’s double-sided printing capability is a convenient feature for saving paper and improving efficiency. Overall, the printer seems to fulfill the needs of users who prioritize ease of use and practicality, especially in small work environments.
In terms of setup, users frequently mention that the printer is easy to get up and running. The setup process is straightforward, with many able to start printing within 10 to 15 minutes of unboxing. The wireless connectivity feature also allows for seamless integration with home networks, which many users find incredibly convenient. This means that multiple devices can connect without much technical knowledge, making it a hassle-free option for households and small offices. The print speed is another highlight, with users noting that it performs well for its price range, delivering high-quality text documents rapidly.
However, the manual paper feed for two-sided printing surprised some users, as it was not an automatic function. Users expecting automatic duplex printing expressed disappointment in needing to manually turn the paper over to achieve double-sided results, which can be time-consuming for larger print jobs. A few users faced challenges with connectivity, particularly when the printer was not in use for extended periods, necessitating reconfiguration. Complaints about toner costs are common, with many users pointing out that replacing toner can be expensive, and that the starter cartridges included with the printer are only partially filled, resulting in a need for early replacement. Paper jams are reported as well, especially when using the second paper tray, which can be frustrating for those trying to manage larger print loads efficiently.
Another point of concern is the cost of toner over time. While the printer itself is relatively affordable, users repeatedly mention that the replacement toner cartridges are quite pricey. This high cost of consumables could be prohibitive for people who plan to use the printer frequently. The starter cartridges that come with the printer are reported to have a low capacity, which means they may need to be replaced sooner than expected, further adding to the running costs. Despite these drawbacks, the majority of customers feel satisfied with their purchase, especially those who value the affordable upfront cost of the printer combined with decent print speed and quality. This printer appears to be a strong contender for anyone needing a basic color laser printer with good speed, compact design, and simple functionality, but it may not be ideal for users looking for high-end graphics quality or the lowest running costs.
PROS
- Easy Setup: Setting up the printer is a straightforward process that many users completed in about 10-15 minutes. A user said, “This printer was super easy to connect, even for a tech novice like me.” The user-friendly setup makes this printer accessible to a wide range of people, including those with minimal technical expertise.
- Compact Design: The printer’s size is compact enough to fit on desks or small shelves, which is a common praise among users. “I really love how compact this printer is, it fits perfectly on my desk,” commented one satisfied customer. Its lightweight nature means it can easily be moved if needed, and it doesn’t take up much valuable space in a small office or home setting.
- Print Quality: The quality of printed text is clear and sharp, making it suitable for documents and schoolwork. A user said, “Print quality is excellent for both black and color printing, especially for text.” The ability to produce crisp text and decent color quality makes it a versatile option for a range of basic printing needs, from simple documents to presentations.
- Wireless Printing: Many users appreciate the wireless feature, allowing them to print from multiple devices without hassle. “Being wireless means I can print from my phone or laptop without dealing with cords, and it worked perfectly every time,” said one user. This feature is especially valuable for families or small teams where multiple users need access to the printer without dealing with connection issues.
- Fast Printing Speed: The printer is capable of producing documents quickly, which is particularly appreciated for office use. Users have reported that “printing speed is quite fast, especially for a printer of this size and price.” Fast printing is crucial for users in a work environment who need their documents without waiting, making this printer a solid choice for efficient, everyday use.
- Double-Sided Printing Capability: Although manual, the ability to print on both sides of the page is a feature appreciated by environmentally-conscious users who want to save paper. “The double-sided printing helps reduce paper consumption, which is a plus for those trying to cut down on waste,” mentioned one user.
CONS
- Expensive Toner Replacement: Users frequently noted that replacing the toner is costly, and the starter cartridges that come with the printer have a low capacity. “The toner costs more than the printer itself, making long-term use quite expensive,” one user pointed out. The cost of toner has been a recurring complaint, with users advising potential buyers to consider the ongoing expenses before purchasing.
- Manual Double-Sided Printing: Some users were surprised to find that two-sided printing requires manual intervention. “The manual feed for double-sided printing is inconvenient, especially when you need to print many pages,” said one user. This can be especially cumbersome for those who are accustomed to automatic duplex printing and could deter users who need to print large double-sided documents regularly.
- Paper Jam Issues: A number of reviews mention issues with paper jamming, particularly when using the second tray. “I experienced frequent paper jams when trying to print larger documents, which was very frustrating,” a user reported. Paper jams can lead to delays and wasted paper, which diminishes the convenience factor for those who need efficient, uninterrupted printing.
- Connectivity Problems: A few users had problems with the printer losing its wireless connection after extended periods of inactivity, requiring a reconfiguration each time. “Every time I leave the printer idle for a week, it disconnects from Wi-Fi, and I have to set it up all over again,” noted one user. These connectivity issues can become bothersome, particularly for those who rely heavily on the printer and need it to be readily available.
- Limited Graphics Quality: While the print quality for text is often praised, users who need high-quality graphics or photo printing might find this printer lacking. “The color quality is decent but not suitable for photo printing or high-end graphics,” said one user. This makes it less ideal for users who require vibrant and high-resolution color prints.
Who Should Buy?
The HP Color Laserjet Pro 3201dw Wireless Color Laser Printer is well-suited for users looking for a reliable, compact, and easy-to-use printer for basic home or small office needs. It is ideal for those who print text-heavy documents, need a wireless solution, and are willing to trade off higher toner costs for convenience and quality. This printer is particularly good for people who do not print in very high volumes but need fast, quality prints whenever required. The compact size also makes it a good fit for small spaces, and the wireless functionality adds versatility for households or small teams. However, if high-quality graphics, photo printing, or low running costs are a priority, this may not be the best choice. Users who need more advanced features or frequent, high-volume printing might find better alternatives that offer more cost-effective consumables or enhanced functionality.
This printer is especially recommended for those who value simplicity and reliability over advanced features. If you need a printer that can handle moderate workloads, fits well in a small workspace, and provides consistent quality without too much fuss, then the HP Color Laserjet Pro 3201dw might be a strong candidate for your printing needs. On the other hand, for professionals requiring detailed graphics or those looking for economical long-term use, exploring other models might be more beneficial.
Do Users Recommend It?
Overall, users generally recommend the HP Color Laserjet Pro 3201dw for its combination of ease of use, compact design, and solid print quality for everyday tasks. They appreciate the affordability and wireless convenience, though many do caution about the high toner replacement costs. Those who need a simple and efficient printer for occasional use without heavy graphics requirements find it a great choice, while others seeking more cost-effective toner solutions or advanced features might want to consider other options.
Users also recommend this printer for households or small businesses where several people need to share one device. Its wireless functionality makes it particularly suitable for such environments, and the compact size means that it doesn’t require a dedicated, large space. However, many caution that the long-term costs associated with toner replacement should be taken into account before purchasing. Despite some connectivity and paper handling issues, most users find the overall experience positive, especially those who need basic printing capabilities at an affordable entry price.
In conclusion, the HP Color Laserjet Pro 3201dw is well-liked for its practicality and suitability for light to moderate printing needs. It is seen as a valuable asset for home offices and smaller workplaces that require quick, reliable prints without the need for extensive high-end features. For users who want an uncomplicated, plug-and-play experience, this printer delivers on most fronts. Yet, those wary of higher ongoing toner expenses or those who expect automatic duplex printing and perfect wireless reliability might need to evaluate their specific needs against what this printer can offer.

This printer was great…until replacing the toner.
The first month or so of owning this printer, I would’ve given it 5 stars. The starter cartridges it came with put out AMAZING prints. Then one day, they run out and I’ve only ever replaced them with the same HP brand 218a cartridges. The first time i bought the XL version of each cartridge totaling somewhere around $500). After replacing, prints came out terrible and I mean AWFUL! Colors were way off half the page was faded to blank , unlegible even. I figured, hmm, I must’ve gotten a bad cartridge (or cartridges) even though they were unopened/sealed from HP. Nonetheless, I threw them all out, then bought a new set of the regular 218a HP brand cartridges (totaling $300-400). Installed them in the printer, and wouldn’t u know the prints still came just as bad as they were before. So in total I’ve spent well over $1,000 on this printer to not even use it anymore. I’ve tried trouble shooting every possibility every trick in the book, to no avail. I think it’s shady of HP that CLEARLY the starter cartridges the printer came with are of far better quality than those they provide as replacements, leading you to believe you have a great printer until u replace the ink. By that point, it’s too late to return, I’ve wasted over $1,000 over this garbage printer & toners, and still am unable to print one single page of a properly colored print out.. I was a fan of HP printers all my life but this purchase/experience may have just added them to my blacklist of “will never buy again” if it’s got the “HP” logo on it. They’re theirs and clearly have some deviant practices going on, from my experience. So in conclusion, my message would be to avoid this printer at all costs. Don’t trust Amazon’s “preferred choice” logo that I fell for and trusted. I wish someone would have informed me these issues before I bought this thing – i would’ve saved over a grand that’s been stolen from me, along with all the headaches.

Great so far!
Pros – connected printer via ethernet and let me tell you this is the easiest install and set up ever. From plugging in to test pages on three different computers took about 10 minutes. I’m guessing the negative reviews about set up have to do with maybe wireless config and or user error. Print quality is sharp, speed is fast, and printing is quiet.
Con – Only concern is toner availability which seems to be hard to find but considering this is the #3 selling printer I am sure HP and/or 3rd parties will have sufficient supply soon.
Sidenote, during set up, the printer asks you about auto updates. Anyone looking to install third-party cartridges in the future may want to disable auto update FYI.

The worst customer service from Amazon and HP
I received the printer and got it connected and it worked beautifully for 3 pages. After that it would not print because of low toner levels. I was expecting a printer with toner to start right away. Not to spend $300 more for toner cartridges. HP (after a 2 day chat) determined that the cartridges are expired and that is why they do not work. They referred me back to Amazon to get new cartridges from them. I bought it from the HP store on Amazon. Chatted with Amazon…..their only option is to return the entire printer and reorder. I will definitely be going to a store to buy a new printer that isn’t HP. Both of their customer service experiences have been the worst!!!

Set-up NIGHTMARE
So I decided to buy it, even though it’s nanny ware makes you buy expensive HP cartridges and set up was supposed to be fun. It was MORE than fun. I have over thirty years experience as a user. Not an IT guy. But I have built several computers for example. Essentially you get no paper manual. And my firewall flagged the install download as a problem. Then after having to check/download new firmware and printing a few test pages successfully the thing had a bleeping brain fart, lost all the settings I put and, and won’t return to the setup walk through on the printer so I can’t reconnect to my wifi. And I waited to open it so today is my last day to return to this pos. Nice job HP. Maybe I should just dig that Laserjet 3 out of my garage and fix it instead.
Update – Aug 2024. Silly me, I updated my mesh wifi system in the house. Spent a half hour trying to figure out how to update the wifi network name…like an idiot I changed it…to no avail. Paper manuals? Google search? HP help? Left a number for a call back between 9-5pm EST? YouTube video? Nothing. Completely useless. Finally found ‘reset to factory settings’ buried in a menu and hit it. Then it went through set-up (language, date, time…) and finally…in conjunction with the HP Smart app…which you have to have to tell it to do WiFi setup…it finally took the change.
Then I had to add it as a new printer in windows and as a part if that it asks for your pin…the printer has a pin printed on the tag inside the front door but it’s NOT that one. When windows is setting up the printer the printer generates a NEW pin that appears on the screen and you have 30 seconds to enter it on the computer. Note that I didn’t have to do anything on my iphone at all and it kept working fine.

Decent print quality, atrocious customer support
I purchased this printer for use with the current release of MacOS. The printer setup was easy enough, but there was one glitch: despite a full paper tray, every time I printed a page, the MacOS print queue produced an out-of-paper error message. I spent 7 hours on the phone with HP troubleshooting this. They decided to send me a replacement printer and offered me, for my inconvenience and agreement to keep the printer, one set of high-yield color toner cartridges (Black, Magenta, Cyan, Yellow). A supervisor approved this complimentary order. When they emailed me the order confirmation, I saw that the order included only a high-yield black cartridge, which was not was agreed to. I called HP back and am on the phone with them as I type this. So far on this issue of the complimentary toner, I’ve been on the phone for 1 hour and 19 minutes and still counting. See my iPhone screenshot attached. Utterly disgraceful.

So Far So Good !! HP3201dw is an Excellent Model and a Great Value
I ordered the HP 3201 DW and so far it has met my expectations. I upgraded to a laser printer for my home office needs and after reading the pros and cons, I took a chance on this model and after a week, I have to say things are going well. The colors are vibrant, the printing is quick and relatively quiet. I have an IMac so the setup was instant and easy. I plugged it in, my wife hit a few buttons and wah-lah .. wifi printing. No HP downloads and it even works with Samsung. I print directly from my Samsung cell phone with no challenges at all. I am pleased with the delivery, ease of use, quality, size, price and appearance. This is supposedly the “newer” version and I did purchase the extended warranty just in case.

Terrible setup, terrible toner cartridge policy, then offline
I spent over three hours trying to get this printer configured so that I could print from each computer in the home. The setup is buggy and difficult. The touch screen that you need to use to enter some information is extremely awkward to use. I finally got printing to work. Then the next day I went to print again and couldn’t because I got the error message that the printer was offline. This along with HP’s new restrictions making it so you can’t use non-HP toner cartridges means that this is the last HP printer I’ll ever buy.

TERRIBLE
I’ve had previous HP printers before and have loved them all but this one is terrible. I’ve had it a few months now first annoyed that I can’t return it… so I’m stuck with a printer that essentially doesn’t work. First, it prints when it wants to – I send things to the printer and it’s total luck if that prints or not. Second, then the printer decides how much of the print job it wants to print – whatever whim it feels like for length – mostly never completing the job. Third, constantly telling me it’s out of paper when it’s most certainly not. So, basically, it’s an expense brick. Do no purchase this printer!

Need to note...
I had previously purchase (kinda sorta) same; my mistake not seeing clearly it was not a colored printer. So I found THIS one. Great reviews! Home office. Set up was a bit challenging without the onscreen (touch screen) but fairly doable to do manually. Boom thought all was good for one week. Went to print again and asked to log in (again); wifi not connected (again) but ok, I had not printed in 5 days so perhaps it did not quite connect. (what do I know…); tried again and still nothing; turn off, turn on, reset. frustrating. They saw an alert; “you may have run out of toner” really? One week? and (toner) low? But ok, perhaps I was sent a printer that isn’t up to par for making a mistake ordering original. Now trying to buy a toner. No guidance (this is the toner you need for the printer you just purchased) – which makes me weary to buy and make another mistake. Other than that, when it prints, it prints nicely. #twocents

Great value for a baseline color laser
Thought it would be more basic than it was for the price, really nice printer for lower volume color printing without sacrificing quality. Had an inkjet but got tired of the refill game, plus just wasn’t printing often enough to keep the inkjets from clogging from time to time. Quite happy with this purchase. Wifi didn’t connect on first trial, but about 15 mins of troubleshooting on my own fixed the problem (don’t quite remember what, but I think I deleted the device from System Manager and reinstalled the drivers). Recommend.
