Customer Reviews Summary

The HP LaserJet Pro 4001dw Monochrome Wireless Printer has garnered significant attention from users across various shopping platforms, with a mix of accolades and critiques. Customers widely appreciate its fast printing speed of up to 42 pages per minute, exceptional print quality, and compact design, which collectively make it a standout choice for small businesses and home offices. These features contribute to its reliability in handling large print jobs efficiently, a crucial need for users who demand high performance. In addition, the convenience of features like automatic duplex printing and wireless connectivity allows seamless printing directly from smartphones, laptops, and other devices, making it a modern and versatile choice.

On the other hand, the printer has some notable drawbacks. Many users report difficulties with the initial setup, especially in establishing Wi-Fi connections, which can be frustrating for less tech-savvy individuals. Issues with reliability over time, such as frequent disconnections and occasional hardware malfunctions, have also been highlighted. Furthermore, complaints about its loud operation during printing and the lack of included setup cables add to the criticisms. Despite these challenges, the printer’s overall strengths in speed and print quality make it a compelling option for those willing to navigate its setup complexities.

PROS

  • Exceptional Print Speed: Many users praised the printer’s impressive speed, with one user noting it could print a 650-page document in one day without any issues. This outstanding capability makes it an excellent choice for high-volume printing needs, ensuring that deadlines are met without delays.
  • Superior Print Quality: The printer’s ability to produce sharp and clear text output has been widely commended. One reviewer described it as “sharp and professional,” emphasizing that both single-sided and duplex prints consistently meet high standards, even for detailed graphics.
  • Compact and Space-Saving Design: Despite its powerful performance, the printer’s compact size allows it to fit easily on small desks or in crowded office spaces. A satisfied customer shared, “It’s small enough to tuck under a shelf, making it perfect for home offices or small workspaces.”
  • Convenient Wireless Printing: The convenience of wireless functionality has been a significant highlight. Users frequently mentioned the ease of printing directly from devices like smartphones and tablets. One user noted, “Printing from my iPhone was seamless and quick, enhancing productivity and saving time.”
  • Automatic Duplex Printing: This feature not only saves paper but also provides a professional touch to documents such as booklets or reports. A reviewer praised this capability, saying it ensures “minimal waste while maintaining high-quality outputs.”

CONS

  • Complicated Initial Setup: Several users encountered challenges during the initial setup, particularly with Wi-Fi connections. One reviewer explained, “I had to manually enter the IP address to connect, which was frustrating and time-consuming.” These difficulties may deter users who are less comfortable with technology.
  • Noisy Operation: The printer’s noise level during operation has been a common concern among users. One customer remarked, “It’s the noisiest printer I’ve owned in the last 30 years, making it disruptive in quiet environments.”
  • Connectivity Issues: Some users experienced frequent disconnections, requiring repeated troubleshooting. As one user shared, “Frequent Wi-Fi drops made me resort to a hardwired connection for consistent performance.”
  • Limited Functionality: Unlike all-in-one printers, this model does not include scanning, copying, or faxing capabilities. A buyer commented, “It’s excellent for printing, but you’ll need additional devices for other office tasks, which could be inconvenient.”
  • Reliance on HP Cartridges: The requirement to use HP-approved toner cartridges has drawn criticism for its cost implications. A user pointed out, “Third-party options would have been more economical and flexible for budget-conscious users.”

Who Should Buy?

The HP LaserJet Pro 4001dw Monochrome Wireless Printer is an ideal choice for small businesses, home offices, and individuals who prioritize high-speed monochrome printing. Compact design -faulty printing

I’ve had a love-hate relationship with this printer since receiving it 4 weeks ago.

Initially I was in awe of this HP printer. It is compact and lightweight. It was also easy to setup and connect to the network – I mean I simply plugged the network cable in and the printer was immediately visible and available.

The first print jobs were clean and clear – both text documents and graphics printed nicely (see photos). I was praising HP – easiest setup I had ever experienced!

Well, the issues started two weeks later. First, some of my fonts were not printing correctly – see the attached photos. decided to connect the printer directly to the computer with USB cable to see maybe the issue was network related – same experience with the fonts – some just did not print correctly.

Next, I thought perhaps the print driver needed to be updated. Downloaded the latest driver from the HP site – ran the install four different times and each time it ran for hours without finishing.

Lastly, I found that some print jobs just would not print – not sure why. I turned the printer off then back on and was able to print. Well, the first print job would print then nothing printing again! Uuuggghhh!

So, after so much trial and error, and frustration, I’m giving up and returning the printer. I cannot depend on this printer for the varied print jobs I will need.

Not for a corporate environment

This printer MUST MUST MUST be connected to the internet at all times to work. If your company uses a enterprise level firewall, it will not work! The printer might work fine for a small office but it is not really made for a corporate environment with modern security tools.

Hopefully, Second Time Is A Charm!!!

Received printer. Attempted setup same day. Clearly had problems! Contacted HP technical support afternoon of same day. After 20 minutes on hold twice (because I was cut off the first time when they finally switched me to a real person), I spent two hours with a Tech support person doing problem determination. The conclusion was that the printer was bad. HP then spent the next (almost) two weeks trying to decide what to do about it. I finally gave up and returned the printer to Amazon. As always, Amazon was great! At least I know when I order from Amazon, they will stand behind the purchase! Now, I need to order the same printer again and hopefully it will work.

Ok, second time around. Second printer works great! Setup was easy and straight forward. Quality of print is excellent!! If I hadn’t used tech support, review would have been five stars!! By the way, Amazon got me the replacement printer in one day!

Happy with my new Printer!

I was a little nervous to make the purchase after reading some of the reviews. I did a lot of research, really liked how these look and fit in my budget. When I took it out of the box, I had it up and running within a couple of minutes. I was able to wireless connect my laptops and had no issues printing. I love the printer and hope to have it for many years ahead. Two thumbs up, would recommend!

Wokrs OK but was difficult to setup

Needed this on WiFi and the reviews said it was difficult and so it was. Basically you need a USB cable connected to the printer to set it up. I couldn’t get it to config over an ethernet wired connection. The wizard wouldnt find the printer. I gave it the IP address of the printer and the wizard still failed to find it and or configure its setup. Frustrating. Using the USB cable made it easier.

Great Value in Basic B&W Wireless Printer

Everything about this printer is 5 stars. So. why did I give it 4 stars? That is because the HP documentation and installation software is poor for what I expect after owning HP products for 30+ years.

This printer works from a USB cable and prints wirelessly over the wifi from a laptop, iPad, Android phone and iPhone. The main issue is using it from a laptop. It seems that you have to chose one way or the other – USB or wireless. But, the installation software poorly explains what is going on. In the end my laptop can print via USB or wireless.

My laptop ended up with three printer profiles for the printer: a wireless, USB, and something else pretending to be wireless but seems useless though I think it has something to do with Cloud services. I ended up with 1)HP LaserJet Pro 4001 4002 4003 4004 PCL-6 (V4) (Network) 2) HP ePrint + JetAdvantage and 3) HP LaserJet Pro 4001 4002 4003 4004 PCL-6 (V4)

Number 1 is what to select for wireless. And, #3 lets you print via USB. So, when you are playing around doing the install those are the print profiles needed for wireless and USB. Profile #2 does nothing for me.

Other than the lousy install software and confusing documentation, the printer is great so far. And, looking at reviews for other HP printers I see similar complaints from people on setting it up. Also, the support forum is full of people asking about how to set up the printer. Basically all the support boiled down to uninstall and reinstall. Horrible support to say the least – not one told me the printer profiles that should be generated in Windows 10 to print with.

Other OS maybe are better – IDK. Android and Apple have you download an app and it is easy.

Good printer

Works well as the replacement for the HP M404 printer. Easy to set up and good print quality and speed. Make sure you get this model number and not the dwe. The dwe gets a zero.

Difficult setup but good quality printing

It is a good printer after you get over the frustration of setting it up. This printer took me awhile to set up for several reasons. Firstly, I was able to print documents after connecting it to my laptop via a usb and downloading the software. However, I struggled with connecting it to my phone even after downloading the software. I called hp support and was informed that the printer cannot be connected to WiFi without being plugged directly into the router. Once I plugged it in the router, I was able to print from my phone. Overall, the quality of the print is good and it prints really fast. I was worried because my first two pages had some faults. However, everything I’ve printed after the initial documents came out really good. Good purchase! I just think the description is deceptive because it gives you the impression that the printer can connect to WiFi without being directly plugged in your router. Also, the printer didn’t come with a usb cable or Ethernet cable so I had to source those on my own. After set up, my experience has been wonderful! Ensure you verify that the printer you’re checking out has WiFi capabilities (does not need to be plugged into the router) before checking out.
