Excellent all-in-one office powerhouse, but ink is very expensive and subscription is a rip-off.
Vlad S. June 11, 2024Review source: AmazonThis HP OfficeJet Pro 9135e is great! I’ve replaced my old Epson with this printer and can’t be any happier. Initial setup was super easy, all I needed to do was connect the printer to my home office wireless network. My MacBook found the new printer instantly and automatically installed the latest driver. Let me tell you, this is one versatile powerhouse that combines printing, scanning, copying, and even faxing into one sleek device. The all-in-one machine’s compact design fits perfectly into my home office, taking the same spot as the printer it replaced, which is amazing. It’s capable of printing 20 pages per minute in B&W or 25 pages in color, which is impressive for an inkjet printer! Taking into account that the printer has two paper trays with 250 sheet capacity each, this is one heavy-duty printing factory! I was stunned by the incredible quality of printouts! Capability of outputting 1200 x 1200 printouts on a regular paper and up to 4800 by 1200 optimized dpi on photo paper is super amazing! The scanner is equally good, offering color scanning at a whooping 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution and 30 bits of color depth. It works seamlessly, quickly digitizing documents and photos, and has an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) feature allowing you to feed up to 35 pages to the scanner, and it can scan both sides of each page automatically! Besides that, it has a built-in fax machine and while I do not need to send faxes nowadays, the option is a nice addition for those rare occasions. The touchscreen interface makes navigating through its functions quick and easy. Printing directly from my iPhone is another feature that I came to appreciate, and it’s a huge convenience when you need to print something from your mobile device.
Now a bit of a rant, sorry but I have to say it. While this printer’s hardware is great, I’m concerned with the requirement to use only approved HP toner cartridges – that can hugely limit printer usage for those who, like me, prefer more cost-effective third-party options. HP makes high quality ink, but the price they are charging for it is just outrageous, and I always try to go for 3rd-path compatible ink cartridges to save money as I print a lot. The printer also comes with HP’s ink subscription program, which is a real rip-off. These plans charge you for printing, yes, they charge you per page printing on your own paper that you’ve already paid for. So, for 10 pages a month it’s $1.49, and it goes up from there with 50 pages costing $4.99, 100 pages (they recommend) $6.99, 300 pages $13.99 and finally 700 pages $27.99. And if you print more than the plan allows, they will charge you additional fees!!! This is outrageous! But wait for even more, HP is now forcing you to use only their super-expensive ink with so-called “dynamic security” feature. All it does is block any non-OEM ink you might try to use in the printer. Jeez, it’s as if my car’s manufacturer would be charging me per mile I drive and was trying to stop me from using any gasoline, forcing me to only fill up my tank with their brand gas. I can’t believe how greedy HP has become these days. My advice – do not subscribe for any ink, buy 3rd party compatible and cheap ink, and most importantly, never update firmware that will block you from using cheap ink.
In conclusion, I want to say again that this is a great printer hardware-wise. Printing quality is incredible, scanning is great, it’s compact and easy to setup and use. It has an ADF document scanner and two paper trays. It even has a fax. Everything in one small powerhouse! I really like it. But greedy and dishonest HP tactics that try to force you to use only their overpriced ink and to upsell you their ink subscription service – all that ruins the whole user experience for me. I’d give it 5 stars, but as of right now it gets only 3. Not sure if I can recommend it or not, so decide for yourself but be aware of everything that comes with that purchase.

I have had problems with this printer with some features suddenly stop working and an error message that appears periodically indicating that a fatal failure has occurred. I have made calls to HP support but have not received a solution that corrects the problems. They have told me that my problems are unique for this new model in their product line.
