🗣 Customers Say

Users are largely pleased with the printer's exceptional print quality, fast printing speeds, and wide-format capability. However, frustrations related to challenging setups, connectivity problems, and high ink costs have led to mixed feelings overall.

Customer Reviews Summary

Based on extensive customer feedback, the HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e shines primarily due to its capability to handle large-format printing and scanning, supporting documents up to 11″x17″. Users repeatedly highlight its excellent print quality, crisp colors, and sharp text, especially appreciating how it improves the professional appearance of documents and presentations.

Users commend the printer’s dual paper trays (each holding up to 250 sheets), making it convenient for different paper sizes and heavy printing workloads. Additionally, its automatic duplex printing and scanning capabilities enhance office productivity by efficiently handling multi-page tasks.

However, the product is not without its faults. Many users reported significant challenges during the initial setup, with some stating it took multiple attempts or even hours. The HP Smart app is frequently criticized for being cumbersome and unreliable, particularly in managing wireless connectivity, which often disconnects spontaneously.

Ink costs and the HP+ subscription have also become major points of contention. The Instant Ink program, although convenient for some, has drawn criticism for perceived high long-term expenses and restrictions on using third-party cartridges.

✅ What Are the Advantages of This Product?

  • Wide-format Printing (11″x17″): Users appreciate being able to print and scan large-format documents effortlessly. “I regularly print large spreadsheets and technical drawings, and the 11×17 capability is exactly what I needed,” says one satisfied user from Best Buy.
  • Fast Printing Speeds: With printing speeds up to 34 ppm (draft mode) and 22 ppm (standard mode black-and-white), this printer significantly reduces wait times, ideal for busy home offices. One user remarked, “Prints much quicker than my previous HP, which is fantastic for my workflow.”
  • User-Friendly Touchscreen Interface: The large, responsive 4.3-inch touchscreen simplifies printer operations, making it user-friendly even for less tech-savvy individuals. As one reviewer noted, “It’s as intuitive as using a smartphone, very straightforward even for beginners.”
  • High Paper Capacity and Auto-Feed: The dual trays with a combined capacity of 500 sheets and an automatic document feeder that handles up to 35 pages streamline extensive print and scan jobs. Users frequently highlighted this convenience, describing it as “perfect for frequent printing tasks.”

❌ What Are the Disadvantages of This Product?

  • Challenging Initial Setup: A significant number of users experienced frustration with the printer’s setup process, particularly due to software issues with the HP Smart App. One Amazon user explained, “Spent two hours setting up multiple times; kept getting the ‘setup incomplete’ message.”
  • Frequent Connectivity Issues: Wireless connectivity is unreliable, with frequent disconnections cited by numerous reviewers. A Staples customer commented, “It constantly disconnects, forcing regular resets, which disrupts workflow.”
  • Expensive Ink Consumption: Users expressed frustration about ink cartridges running out sooner than expected, contradicting HP’s advertised three-month duration. “The ink ran out in three weeks,” reported one Amazon customer, highlighting a prevalent dissatisfaction with ongoing costs.

🔄 How Has This Product Improved?

Compared to older HP OfficeJet models (like the popular 7740 and 8620), users note substantial improvements in print speed, color vibrancy (P3 Color technology), and tray capacity. Many longtime HP users praise these enhancements, stating, “This is a noticeable upgrade; everything feels improved, particularly print speeds and tray capacities.”

⚖️ How Does This Product Compare to Other Options?

When compared to competitors such as Brother and Epson, reviewers generally find the HP 9730e superior in print quality and speed, particularly for large-format tasks. However, users frequently recommend Epson for better connectivity stability and Brother for lower long-term ink costs. As one Staples customer noted, “After constant issues with setup, I switched to a Brother printer and haven’t had any problems.”

🎯 Is This Product Right for You?

The HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e is ideal for small businesses, home offices, and professionals who frequently require high-quality wide-format printing. If your printing needs include regular large-sized documents, graphics-heavy presentations, or high-volume office workloads, this printer is a suitable choice.

🎮 What Are Real Users Saying?

Users appreciate its robust performance for both color and black-and-white documents, highlighting it as “perfect for production-level printing.” Yet, significant negative sentiment revolves around the setup and wireless connectivity, with multiple reviewers mentioning a cumbersome and frustrating user experience.

⚠️ What Are the Most Common Problems?

  • Printer Loses Wireless Connection Frequently
  • Difficult and Time-Consuming Initial Setup
  • Rapid Ink Cartridge Depletion

🔧 How to Fix Common Issues?

  • Connectivity Issues: Users recommend placing the printer closer to your router, updating firmware regularly, or connecting via Ethernet cable if wireless issues persist.
  • Setup Issues: Ensure all firmware and apps are updated, carefully follow instructions from HP Smart App, and seek online community tips if the official instructions fall short.
  • Ink Usage: To mitigate high ink costs, enrolling in HP Instant Ink or using draft mode for less critical documents can reduce overall ink consumption.

💡 How Can You Get the Best Experience with This Product?

According to user feedback, regularly updating firmware and clearly understanding the HP Smart app functionalities significantly enhance user satisfaction. Additionally, using genuine HP cartridges consistently provides the highest print quality and printer reliability.

🏗️ How Durable Is This Product?

Most customers agree that the HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e is sturdy and well-built, suitable for regular, intensive use. Users regularly printing large volumes have found it durable, stating it is “solidly built, capable of handling heavy workloads easily.”

☎️ Customer Support & Warranty

Customer feedback on HP’s support service is mixed. While some appreciate the one-year warranty coverage, many reviewers voice dissatisfaction with support responsiveness and effectiveness, describing experiences as frustrating and unresolved. One Amazon reviewer reported, “HP support was unable to resolve my issue, and they transferred me to a costly third-party service without informing me clearly.”

⏳ What Do Long-Term Users Say?

Long-term users generally express satisfaction, emphasizing continuous high-quality printing and minimal maintenance after overcoming initial setup hurdles. However, ongoing costs, especially related to ink subscriptions, continue to be a notable drawback.

🤔 Is This Product Worth It?

Overall, the HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e is highly recommended if your primary concerns are print quality, printing speed, and wide-format functionality. It delivers outstanding results for professionals and businesses requiring reliable performance. However, prospective buyers should be prepared for potentially difficult setups and recurring wireless connectivity challenges.

Black Ink Streaking/Update

I have two other HP printers and have not had this problem. I just received this printer today so it was brand new out of the box and I am experiencing issues with it. As you can see by the pictures, there is a lot of streaking and smearing of the black ink. I have printed the same document on my other printers and have not had this problem at all, so I am thinking there is some type of defect on this printer.

Update 5/12/24-
I am now rating this printer 5 stars. I ended up ordering a new printer because I had a feeling the first one I had was defective. I am experiencing zero issues with smearing and it is printing perfectly fine now! I am currently waiting for Amazon to pick up the first printer I ordered to receive a refund.
The printer is rather large, but it looks very nice on my desk and I love that it has two trays and can print larger sizes to create my classroom posters and mini anchor charts.

Typical of the new HP Products

Bought this to replace an HP 8620 which had worked flawlessly for 13 years.
The 8620 print-head failed, and a brand new HP print-head would not work, nor would new cartridges.

This printer was as close to the same specs as the now expensive paper-weight 8620 so I placed an online order.

Received the printer and the only way it would work was to create an HP Smart account and agree to the advertised 3 months “free” Instant Ink trial. It would not switch seamlessly between tray 1 and tray 2. When that issue was resolved after many hours of work, then the ADF would not work. Many more hours to get that issue fixed. ADF will not scan a 1 sided document and print a 2 sided copy as the old 8620 did. Hp tech support (If you could call it that) could one suggest uninstall and reinstall software. Of course that didn’t work.
The advertised 3 months “free” HP Instant Ink was shortened at forced enrollment to only 2 months, and now HP has my credit card info. with no way to delete it and say I will be billed at the end of 1 month, which translates to 0 months “free” trial. Online reviews indicate even though customer cancelled the Instant Ink scam HP has wormed their way into the printer firmware and will brick the printer if HP Instant Ink is not re-enrolled!
There needs to be another class action lawsuit!
Buyer BEWARE of buying ANY HP products!

Average Printer

Average printer. Works a bit slow. Scanning is also slow. The HP software “HP Smart” is flawed: some options do not work, and heavy use caused the software to stop working leaving the only option to “X” out and lose the un-saved work. Knowing the signs before the software stops, allows a work around to continue working. The printer works well enough for home use but I would not recommend it for small business. HP Support was also average – very scripted when they finally responded.

Great printer, but Hp Instant Ink a terrible idea

The reason for the low rating is not the printer, it’s the 3 month trial of HP Instant Ink. Printer delivery was great, printer works great, very pleased. But the deal on the ink is awful, so don’t think you’re getting anything extra over the price of the printer. You have to select a number of pages per month for a rate, business rate upwards of $27 a month/700 pages once trial expires. IF YOU EXCEED the number of pages, they want $1 for every 10 pages printed over. That is just ridiculous. How can you predict? You get penalized for using the printer. Thankfully, you can cancel. Very bad marketing idea, HP! But I love the printer, don’t get me wrong. And BestBuy is the best vendor.

Hard to Install, Very loud, Scan software terrible

I bought this for my home office and for the ability to scan large documents. It was a major mistake not to set up an HP web account before installing it and the software.
Issue 1: There is no workaround to the fact it can only be registered using the HP Smart app.
Issue 2: It took four “hours” to install it the first time trying three different methods: Microsoft Store, Google Play phone app, HP web site. It wouldn’t “recognize” the printer yet it still “recognized” the paper was low. The troubleshooting response: “Unfortunately, no solution to this problem can be found at this time.” Then said to reboot and re-install (again).
Issue 3: Two more re-installs later, it prints but the scanning options are inane. Each install opened a different app with different scan options. None made sense. The craziest part is there is no easy way to get back to the options to scan the next document! There is no good option to name scanned documents either. This is the stupidest scan app I’ve even seen and I’m an IT pro in my mid-60s.
Issue 4: the noise level is disturbing and the whole machine vibrates so much it literally shakes the table it’s on, especially when it scans. In sum, I am probably going to return it. Given the software issues, I will not buy an HP.
