🗣️ Customers Say

Most users are highly satisfied with the Ninja DT551's versatile cooking performance and large capacity, often citing its fast preheating as a major benefit. Common complaints focus on the loud fan noise during operation and the difficulty of deep-cleaning the interior. A few users also noted quality control issues like fan vibration.

Customer Reviews Summary

The Ninja DT551 Prestige Smart XL Air Fryer & Countertop Oven is earning rave reviews, with many users calling it a ‘life saver’ that has made their conventional ovens all but obsolete. The appliance’s versatility is its most celebrated quality, with users successfully preparing everything from whole roasted chickens and pizzas to air-fried favorites and dehydrated snacks. The 90-second preheat time is a standout feature, saving significant time and making weeknight cooking far more convenient. The Pro Cook Thermometer is another highlight, consistently delivering perfectly cooked meats and taking the guesswork out of achieving the desired doneness.

Despite the praise, a few recurring complaints emerge from the user feedback. The most common issue is the noise level; numerous users describe the fan as being exceptionally loud, with some comparing it to a “jet engine” or an “airplane taking off.” This has been a deal-breaker for some, leading to returns. Another frequent pain point is cleaning. While daily spot-cleaning is manageable, users find that grease splatters on the interior and the exposed heating elements are very difficult to clean thoroughly once baked on. As one user noted, “My only advice is to clean it after every cook. Not easy to clean once grease splatter gets baked on.”

Finally, while most users are happy with the build quality, a minority have experienced issues that suggest inconsistent quality control. These problems range from excessive rattling and fan vibrations to units malfunctioning or arriving damaged. The oven’s large size is another double-edged sword—while the XL capacity is a major benefit for families, it takes up a substantial amount of counter space, which is a significant drawback for those with smaller kitchens.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How loud is the Ninja DT551 oven?
This is one of the most common points of feedback. Many users find the oven to be very loud when the convection fan is running, especially on Air Fry and Roast settings. Some have described the noise as being similar to a small airplane or a drone. If you are sensitive to kitchen appliance noise, this is a significant factor to consider.
  • Is the oven easy to clean?
While the removable crumb tray and accessories are relatively easy to clean, many users report that the interior of the oven is challenging to keep spotless. Grease can splatter onto the walls and the exposed heating elements, and if not wiped down immediately, it can become baked on and very difficult to remove.
  • Can it fully replace a conventional oven?
Absolutely, for most daily cooking. Its XL capacity can handle a 12 lb turkey or multiple dishes at once. Thanks to its rapid preheating and versatile functions, many owners report that their full-size oven now gathers dust, especially for daily meals.
  • Does the air fryer function work as well as a standalone air fryer?
Most users are very impressed with the air fry function, stating that it delivers crispy and evenly cooked results that are comparable to, or even better than, dedicated basket-style air fryers. The larger capacity is also a significant advantage, allowing for bigger batches of food.
  • Are there any issues with the temperature probe?
The probe itself is highly praised for its accuracy. However, a few users found the interface for selecting the protein type (e.g., chicken, beef) to be unintuitive, as it requires using the “Function” buttons, which isn’t clearly explained in the manual.

Should You Buy It?

This decision comes down to a trade-off between exceptional cooking versatility and a few notable drawbacks.

This is the perfect appliance for you if:

  • You’re the designated family chef who needs to cook large meals or multiple dishes at once without firing up the main oven.
  • You want to consolidate your toaster, air fryer, and countertop oven into a single, powerful machine.
  • You value speed and performance and would appreciate a 90-second preheat and a smart thermometer for perfect roasts.

You might want to look elsewhere if:

  • You have a small kitchen with limited counter space.
  • You are sensitive to loud appliance noise.
  • You prioritize appliances that are exceptionally easy to deep clean.

The best toaster oven I’ve ever had

I’m very impressed with the Prestige Smart XL Toaster Oven from Ninja. As a lifelong user of toaster ovens for toasting and smaller batch oven cooking, I’ve been hunting for a good replacement for my nearly tw decade old Krups FBC2. This Ninja model DT551 is the first that hasn’t felt like a compromise. While many toaster ovens implement “air fry” by renaming “convection” and deliver sub-par performance, the air fry setting in this Ninja oven uses a large fan with significant airflow and matches the excellent performance of bin-style air fryers that I have preferred.

The design is quite large, with the controls integrated into an oversized plastic handle that remains cool to the touch during use. The large size dominates my standard depth counter, with the handle extending over 27.5″ from the counter backsplash. If you’ve occasionally wished for a second oven for cooking, this Ninja Prestige Smart XL might just cover your needs. The four levels for placing pans in the oven are clearly indicated for each cooking setting, eliminating the need to consult the manual. I was impressed with how the seven different levels of toasting cover many shades of toast darkness, and the built-in light (somewhat uncommon in small toaster ovens) comes on automatically in the last minute of cooking to assist with early removal.

I did notice a slight bias in the air fryer towards the back of the oven, but this is easily remedied by rotating the basket 180 degrees once during cooking. The temperature at the back, near the circulation fan, might be a bit warmer, so I may need to adjust timing further.

In the past few weeks, I have cooked two 1.5 lb pork tenderloins using the temperature probe and whole roast settings. I typically cook those to 140 F in a full-size oven, but found 140 and even 135 F resulted in medium to medium-well tenderloin. The instruction manual suggests a medium rare pork target of 130 F, which is atypically low but may be what’s needed for a small oven.

The various pans included with the oven are high quality for added accessories – 2 pans, 1 drip tray, 1 air fry basket, 2 wire shelves, 1 crumb tray, and 1 roast thermometer with magnetic storage. I might try to pick up a second air fry tray to help rotate cleaning the used basket in the dishwasher and still have an air fry tray available (the 11.4 x 14.4 DT251 Foodi trays appear compatible).

I noticed that there’s both a heavy-duty convection/air fryer circulation fan inside and a quieter fan that stays on during and after cooking, possibly cooling the internal electronics of the Ninja. The cooling fan stayed on for a long time after roasting my tenderloin. I’ve come to expect the sound now, but this unexpected source of noise should have been mentioned in the user manual.

The cooking settings are well thought out, with quality features like automatic activation of the light, the cool-to-the-touch handle, and the powerful circulating fan all contributing to this being the best toaster oven I’ve ever used. The top and bottom heaters do a great job toasting things fairly quickly, and the other cooking functions work well, with some adjustments for faster cooking times needed. It is also the most expensive toaster oven I’ve owned, but it’s the first toaster oven that feels like an upgrade from my decades-old Krups, which I’ve been keeping running by replacing switches.

Great oven but first one without meat probe had vibration issues

We purchased the 10-in-1 model and liked it a lot except for some annoyingly loud vibrations. After reading a few reviews talking about vibration from an unbalanced fan, we took a chance and returned it, getting instead the stainless 10-in-1 model with thermometer, and the noise is gone. The oven is great – looks good, simple controls, easy to read display, preheats quickly, quiet. Just be aware there are some quality control issues with the fan and make sure you get one that doesn’t have that issue.

Update: stainless 10-in-1 model continues to perform like a champ. We didn’t think the meat probe was important, but we use it often to cook a whole chicken or a roast. Very convenient. We love this oven. One minor quibble – selecting which protein for the probe is confusing. You have to use the function buttons, which normally only switch between to cooking modes (bake, toast, air fry, etc) to select the protein (beef, chicken, fish). Not intuitive or well explained in manual. But we LOVE this oven despite that quirk.

Functional, Steep Pricing Compared to Previous Revision

The Ninja Prestige XL Air Fryer Oven might seem new, but it is a rebranding of the existing Foodi line of appliances. It uses a similar product code and can use the existing accessories.

Functionality seems mostly identical, with the same number of functionalities as well as identical settings. The interior and exterior look the same except for the handle, which has now been updated to this sleeker and more stylish matte gray. The buttons are easy to use and the lit up text and numbers allow for easy understanding.

It is a fairly chunky unit, measuring roughly 17 by 20 inches, requiring you to invest in a sufficiently deep and sufficiently wide area of your countertop compared to a basket air-fryer. Compared to the basket style, this oven style air fryer require a bit more mindfulness when cleaning and it definitely gets much much hotter on the outside. Extra consideration has to be taken since it radiates heat more.

Cook times compared to a basket air fryer also take a fair bit more time, but not much more than I anticipated. The added functionalities of being an oven also make it much more convenient to use than the gas oven. The width and depth of the air fryer oven allows me to fit something as large as a massive rib roast. Especially nice is the smart thermometer since it has been surprisingly accurate as well.

The included accessories are very much appreciated. There is plenty of trays and shelves to use so that you can experience the convenience of multi-level cooking. It has much more flexibility compared to the basket with the main caveat being the reliance on more mindful cleaning.

You can expect to clean this up more carefully because of the heating elements on the top and bottom. It is a bit more awkward to wipe the interior with the recommended damp sponge since the heating elements feel so fragile. Additionally, they do not recommend harsh chemicals since the interior can get stripped easily that way, but it also makes it hard to remove baked on grease and splatters.

Overall, I do think it’s worth a recommendation if you need this specific style of bulk cooking, but do understand that it needs more TLC from you. It is also noticeably noisier as well, the fan will continue to run some time after cooking since it takes much more effort to cool it off. It gets uncomfortably hot, so extra care should also be taken when moving near it. Taking all these into consideration, what you do end up with is a super functional appliance that can churn out large meals quickly and easily. But still, consider the older model if you can since you save a considerable chunk for the same functionality.

Beauty, Function, Style and replaces a few appliances in a small footprint

Ninja Prestige Smart XL with Pro Cook System 10-in-1 Air Fry Digital Countertop Convection Toaster Oven with Air Fry, Air Roast, Broil & Bake, Pro Cook Thermometer, 1800 Watts, Stainless Steel, DT551
This oven can replace multiple appliances and the xl size makes it so versatile. Typically cook for six and my previous countertop oven did not have the same capacity that you have in this Ninja XL model. This oven is deeper than most and leaves a few inches in front of the oven on a standard countertop. The exterior is modern and sleek and looks perfect with stainless steel appliances and very easy to clean. It is very easy to use to select the function time and temperature on its control pad. Amazing that it heats up within 90 seconds and automatically starts its time countdown after the preheat stage so I place food in before preheating. When it completes the cook cycle the oven will display a message but you have to turn off the oven. I have so far baked, air fried, reheated and made toast with perfect results. Frozen chicken strips and fries taste better using the airfryer function than baking. The oven cooks faster than my last oven so you may want to check your food with the handy bright interior light. I have not had the opportunity to roast with the thermometer and if anything of note will update my review. A small family can completely replace using their standard oven and for larger families most meals can rely on this oven for entree and perhaps sides. It does come with some pans which are larger than standard ovens and you can buy accessories if you need them or for completing the dehydrator function. My existing baking dishes and muffin tins do fit. The instructions are easy and there is an included recipe booklet. I find it relatively quiet and included a video of it running. Compared to my previous high end countertop oven this is a vast upgrade with all its functions and energy efficiency – Recommend you give this serious consideration as a great choice and brand.

Pretty good!

I bought this to replace our old toaster oven and also wanted to get an air fryer. It is great that it replaces many appliances at once. We have a small kitchen/apartment so we cant waste any counter space.

We have used it for about a week, and i love the size (fits a lot of food), and so far everything i have cooked has turned out well. Cant really complain, it does what it advertises. I love the way it looks and it comes with all the racks and pans you would need, although i may buy extra air fry baskets eventually(only comes with 1….but its bigger than most).

Note that it has a fairly loud fan noise, and does have a bit of a metallic rattle sound at times when the fan revs up. Probably the metal bake trays sitting on the metal rack or maybe just the racks themselves. The exterior also gets very hot, so you need to be careful and definitely do not want to leave anything on top of it while its running.

I had trouble deciding whether to buy this one for the extra cost, or what looked like the older version that looked the same but had a black colored handle. So far i am happy with it and I like the integrated thermometer.

Loud rattling noise and unit has slight wobble

Replacing the previous model of the Ninja Oven XL, I was looking forward to this new model as it had the built thermometer but the unit quality just seems off. Not sure how it happened but the unit has slight wobble and when it’s on it has a loud metallic rattling sound. After seeing other reviews with similar issues I decided to return it and not risk it breaking out of warranty. I did try it on salmon and the smart cooking feature did do a great job.

good value

So far I do like this oven. I only have it a couple of days. But the Dimensions:17.09″D x 20.22″W x 13.34″H are not correct the oven is only 18″ W not 20 for me the 2″ make a difference, for what bakeware can be used. The pans that come with this oven are not dishwasher safe. Will use it some more to see if I will keep it.
