Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Convenient and Time-Saving: Several reviewers appreciate the self-cleaning feature, which reduces the need for manual scooping and saves time. The automatic operation is particularly helpful for busy owners or those who travel frequently.
  • Odor Control: Some customers find that the litter box effectively controls odors, especially with the built-in air purifier and carbon filters. The enclosed design also helps to contain smells.
  • Easy Setup and Use: Many reviewers mention that the litter box is easy to set up and that their cats adapted to it quickly. The app connectivity and features, such as monitoring litter box usage, are also seen as beneficial.

Cons

  • Malfunctions and Reliability Issues: Numerous customers report that the litter box frequently gets stuck, jams, or malfunctions, requiring constant monitoring and manual intervention. Sensor problems, such as the weight sensor falsely detecting a cat, are also common.
  • Poor Odor Control: Several reviewers complain that the odor control is inadequate, with smells leaking from the waste drawer. Some describe the smell as being worse than a traditional litter box.
  • High Cost and Subscription Fees: Many customers feel that the litter box is overpriced, especially considering the additional costs of replacement filters, bags, and subscription fees for advanced app features. Some find the subscription model to be a "scam" and not worth the money.

I’ve been wanting to upgrade to an automatic cleaning litter box for a long time. I was happy to see this one was within my budget. First, I love the design. It’s attractive and doesn’t take up more space than the original litter box, which was a jumbo top loading square box with pullout litter tray. Pros of the Luma are its great packaging for shipping, easy setup, quick connection to the app, and useful accessories. I love that it came with a little step because it’s quite tall, but my cats are used to jumping on top of their old litter box so I haven’t seen them use the step yet. The motion of the box when cleaning is smooth and low noise. The fan has two modes high which is loud and low which is much quieter (barely noticeable). From the app I can control frequency of cleaning from atomic to specific times or manually, how long the odor removing fan stays on, turn indicators lights on/off, and many more features. The AI can be trained to identify which cat (if multi cat household) is using the box and with the membership plan it will store videos of the cats interactions, analyze their weight and poop cycles. There is an area to add activity, water and eating schedule, as well. Cons are without the plan you get snapshots of the cat in the box and nothing else. From those photos you can teach the AI how to identify each pet. Other analytics are not available without the membership. My Luma has been getting stuck mid-cleaning cycle and sits in a holding pattern with the canister pointed backwards. It’s been doing this since I set it up. I’ve followed all the guidance: 4″ space all around, sits on hard surface, no objects are near the entrance and the cats are not actively using it, yet it keeps “pausing” because the weight sensors detect a pet nearby. It’s like it times-out and just shuts off mid cycle. I sent a message to Customer Support and am currently waiting for a response. This hasn’t caused me to like the device any less. When I notice it’s stuck, I just wave my hand in front of a sensor and it resumes the cleaning cycle. Considering I don’t have to completely clean a litter box multiple times a week I feel that is a minor inconvenience, and may be unique to my box. Other cons are the repplacment filter is quite expensive, currently priced at $19 each lasting 90 days. While other carbon filters are roughly half that price. The same goes for the replacement bags that collect the used litter. The membership is also expensive for information I find unnecessary. I didn’t need any of that before with my “analog” litter box so I can’t justify the price. Overall I do recommend. Keep size and space in mind for small homes, as it is quite large and somewhat heavy. The second is a picture when the inner chamber is stuck mid cycle.

I shopped for so long and returned two other auto litter boxes. Purteck and Thereye models. No I couldn’t afford the Litter robots especially since folks who have it told me they break down a lot. This one has been the biggest (1 cat is 10lbs & 2 is 13lbs) they fit in it perfectly. My timid kitten took into it right away I was shocked. My older cat I was pressuring her but eventually went on her own when I saw alert on my phone. Gets rid of smell. Pretty quiet. Love all the notifications when they are near it or using it. Definitely worth it! Assembly was easy. Just a few put togethers. It does kinda wobble but I understand those are the weigh sensors on bottom.
