Pros & Cons
Pros
- Odor Control: Several reviewers highlight the litter box's ability to control odors, especially when used with appropriate clumping litter. Some reviewers mention that they no longer notice any litter box smell in their homes.
- Cat Acceptance: Many cats readily accepted and used the litter box, with some even enjoying watching the cleaning process. Some reviewers noted that their cats preferred this box over other automatic models.
- Convenience: Customers appreciate the convenience of automatic scooping, which reduces the time and effort required for litter box maintenance. The easy-to-remove waste drawer is also frequently mentioned as a positive feature.
Cons
- Reliability Issues: A significant number of reviewers report that the litter box stopped working or experienced mechanical failures (such as the rake getting stuck) within a few months of purchase. Some reviewers mention that the plastic parts are prone to breaking.
- Noise Level: Many reviewers describe the litter box as loud or noisy during operation, which can be disruptive, especially in smaller living spaces or at night. The noise is often attributed to the motor or the rake scraping against the box.
- Ineffective Cleaning: Several reviewers note that the rake does not effectively clean the litter box, leaving waste behind or pushing clean litter into the waste bin. Some mention that the rake doesn't reach the bottom of the pan, leading to a build-up of soiled litter.

Save your money. DO NOT BUY. MAJOR SCAM
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.Amazon Customer December 3, 2024Review source: AmazonWe have used the original petsafe scoopfree litter box for 4 years with no issues. We decided to upgrade, and try this product since it gives you the option to use any scoop able litter of your choice. BIG MISTAKE! This piece of garbage was a HUGE waste of money. It rarely functions without jamming the “scooper”! And even when it does function it doesn’t reach all of the litter areas, so you are stuck with cat turds and other unpleasant things smushed to the sides. No matter how little or how much litter you add, it always makes a mess. Litter escapes beneath the pan every time due to its poor design. Please save your money and DO NOT BUY. We bought this back in April of this year(2024) and ended up rebuying the original scoop free so that we don’t have to fight with this thing anymore. Petsafe needs to go back to the blueprints for this thing, because it is a major failure on their part.

Broke after 10 months
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.Ed VanDerJagt December 1, 2024Review source: AmazonThis is about twice the price of any other litter box in my house. I only get automatic litter boxes. I purchased it in February and I thought it had broken in November. It worked long enough to make it past the warranty, but for the price I expected reliability. I was going to put this down as 2 stars, but the PetSafe support bot walked me through a relatively easy repair which fixed the problem. Addendum. The fix offered by support broke one month later. It is now December. Scoop Free makes a reliable crystal litter box. Pet Zone makes a box for clay litter that is marginally better than this one.

Quick working.
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.betty shaw November 25, 2024Review source: AmazonIt quick working. I use fresh step cat litter in it. It work for a couple of days. So I change to crystal cat litter and it did the same thing. So no matter which one I use it wouldn’t stay on the track. I think it was just fault in this one because I have another one like it and it works.

Messy and noisy
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.Amazon Customer November 25, 2024Review source: AmazonA large amount of litter ends up underneath the box. After a few months of use, the rollers that move the metal grate squeak and whine loudly and sometimes there is a loud pop when the lid opens for dumping. Also, a large amount of urine saturated litter gets stuck in the wrong side of the metal grate. Not worth the money.

So far so good!
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.Lillith November 24, 2024Review source: AmazonThese are a life changer! I use Fresh Step Multi- Cat and it works well. I bought two, because my older, smaller cat is possessive sometimes, so it’s better for them to just have separate litter boxes.
The cons are: 1) One of the rakes is a little off and I had to unscrew the top to access it and set it right. It is still a little bent so it’s pushing against the side of the box. Very annoying. 2) Litter and waste gets stuck on the other side of the rake, so you do have to make sure you pull out the rake and scoop up the waste on the other side sometimes. 3) If you choose to have a lid like me, you have to use a screw driver to shimmy plastic caps out of the grooves to snap the lid in. Very bad design! I had to scratch up one side of one of them to get the plastic filler cap out.
Overall, I wish it was cheaper for how many problems they have, but it is still worth the investment! Keeping the bags in the tray make it super simple and easy to clean and empty. It’s cut back on cat smell in my flat significantly. Worth the buy. -
Awful
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.Kindle Customer November 21, 2024Review source: AmazonIt smears and clogs up the rake, then it pushes way too much clean litter along with the waste into the bin. Eventually the clogged rake stalls and won’t rake. This happens daily, which defeats the purpose of a self scooping litter box. I’ve tried clumping clay litter, Pretty Litter and clumping pretty litter.
Sadly the cat like the box, but I’m not using it anymore

Best of Breed: I've Tried Them All
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.Dotty November 21, 2024Review source: AmazonI’ve tested quite a few automatic litter boxes, including the LitterMaid and Nature’s Miracle systems, and I have to say, the PetSafe ScoopFree is the best option currently on the market.
That said, it’s not perfect. There are a few engineering flaws that could be improved. For example, the rake system occasionally gets clogged, and the tray replacement process could be more intuitive. Still 5 stars though.

Amazing Customer Service!
Sandy November 21, 2024Review source: AmazonI originally purchased this litter box in March 2024. Around November 2024 I broke it. No question about it. I accidentally installed the rake backwards or didn’t lock it in and it broke. I contacted the online support agent and they sent me a replacement! The one year warranty is great!
The box itself is one of few that are automatic open box style. The other being $600 (Neakasa M1) and unusually high and not as big. The design is simple but effective. It’s not smart. There is no app. It’s barebones. The rake timer can’t be adjusted so use a quick clumping litter. The compartment is fairly large. I can go 2-3 days before emptying the bin. (I have two large male cats 15-20lbs.) I still like to do a quick visual and top off as needed daily. There is a decent amount of clean litter that gets raked out too. I think the clumping is way better than the crystal version for urine odor control. It’s also very easy to take apart to clean! The old crystal version didn’t allow the rake to come out. With occasional deep cleaning even though this is plastic it should last a long time. Much easier to clean than the dome style automatic boxes.
For about $250 it’s worth the money imo. You can go away for a weekend without worrying about the litter box. Or if one of your cats is extra picky they will always have a clean box to go in and no accidents.
It’s not perfect but it works as intended. At this price point I don’t think you can ask for much more.
