Pros & Cons
Pros
- Odor Control: Several reviewers highlight the litter box's ability to control odors, especially when used with appropriate clumping litter. Some reviewers mention that they no longer notice any litter box smell in their homes.
- Cat Acceptance: Many cats readily accepted and used the litter box, with some even enjoying watching the cleaning process. Some reviewers noted that their cats preferred this box over other automatic models.
- Convenience: Customers appreciate the convenience of automatic scooping, which reduces the time and effort required for litter box maintenance. The easy-to-remove waste drawer is also frequently mentioned as a positive feature.
Cons
- Reliability Issues: A significant number of reviewers report that the litter box stopped working or experienced mechanical failures (such as the rake getting stuck) within a few months of purchase. Some reviewers mention that the plastic parts are prone to breaking.
- Noise Level: Many reviewers describe the litter box as loud or noisy during operation, which can be disruptive, especially in smaller living spaces or at night. The noise is often attributed to the motor or the rake scraping against the box.
- Ineffective Cleaning: Several reviewers note that the rake does not effectively clean the litter box, leaving waste behind or pushing clean litter into the waste bin. Some mention that the rake doesn't reach the bottom of the pan, leading to a build-up of soiled litter.

Fixes All The Issues/Headaches From the Original Model

I am always looking for new ways to streamline my routine. So one of those ways was getting the original scoop free litter boxes. In order to extend the life of my litter, I got the reusable pans, and physically scooped their “leavings” out of the compartment twice a day. I also lined the litter boxes with baking soda for extra odor control and use a combination of Arm and Hammer litter box deodorizers and fresh step crystals to fight the feces smell for those little tiny bits that the grate sometimes leaves behind that are impossible to scoop out. My biggest complaint was that even though I had six original scoop free litter boxes for five cats (expensive, I know), that the “poop containers” would fill up so quickly and stink up the house, even when I was emptying them consistently once or twice a day. Also, the grate itself would get filthy, and there was no way to remove it to properly clean it. The box was also very low to the ground and didn’t have much depth, so the litter scatter was everywhere all the time and forced me to have to change it more often because all the litter was soiled with urine, and because the depth was so thin, it made it super noticeable to both me and my cats that it was time to change the litter.
It seems that Petsafe was basically reading my mind with this new model they put out for the clumping litter box. I still opted to use crystals for it because I prefer them over clay which leaves dust all over the house, but I love the option to use clay if I want to. This new box is larger than the previous box, and deeper. The sides are a bit taller, so I would recommend a step of some kind for smaller kittens to get into, but because its taller, I do notice far less scatter than I had with the previous model. Instead of scooping the poop to the other end of the litter box, it actually scoops it into a drawer to make it more accessible to dump more often without having to open the entire box to get to it. The “poop storage” drawer is actually much bigger, so it can actually go longer without dumping, but I still choose to dump it daily. And finally my favorite part, the grates COME OUT! Those filthy grates that were the bane of my existence in the previous model finally come out, and guess what, they are dishwasher safe! I recommend cleaning your dishwasher with dishwasher cleaner after you try this hack, but every couple of days, I take all the grates, put them in the dishwasher, set it and forget it for about an hour. Then just reinstall them, and press the button to grab all the leavings that your cats did while they were in the cycle. They are clean, sanitized, and no longer need to be scrubbed maliciously with a scrub brush. My life could not be more streamlined and happy with this new model.
My ONLY grievance with this is the pan and the drawer are not considered dishwasher safe (I asked Petsafe), and that they did away with the LED counter they had on the previous model so I can keep track of which litter boxes they are using the most easily. Hope they add these features into future models. I have sent the company my feedback on it. But honestly, I just take the pans and the drawers to the shower, spray them down with Lysol and shower them off with hot water. Takes about five minutes, and most of that time is just drying them off and preparing the litter back in the pan.
In all honestly I find these litter boxes way easier to clean and maintain. I am extremely happy with them. My cats also seem to enjoy having a deeper litter box to do their business in. I am extremely happy with my purchase. I originally purchased two to replace the two kitchen ones just to test, but ended up buying four more to replace the others after just a couple of days of using the new ones. Yes, pricey expense, but the investment was totally worth it to me. The time saving element alone was worth it. I am single, live alone, work full time, and have five cats. Anything I can do to get a little extra time back is a blessing.
Also, with these new boxes, I have been able to extend the life of my litter significantly. I have gone to changing the litter once every two weeks instead of once a week, which saves a tremendous amount of money for me personally on my cat budget. I went from spending over $800/mo on crystal litter to spending about $200. Keep in mind I am an absolute clean freak, so as soon as I walk by the box and catch a whiff, I am changing the box that day. Some people get nose blind but I am super sensitive to it and literally cannot wait once I smell start to smell it.
Anyone who is a clean freak like me, I highly recommend this box to streamline your routine. I feel like each box will be good for up to two cats. But I have always used the rule of one box for each cat plus one. I also still have two standard boxes on top of that just to give them options, but they generally don’t use them as much as they use the scoop free ones.
I also used Klarna through their app if that helps anyone else budget wise.
Anyway, hope you liked my review.

Open top good for larger cat, noisy
Incentivized Incentivized review: The reviewer received a benefit for sharing feedback.D April 11, 2024Review source: AmazonBefore letting my cat use this, I did some tests to make sure it couldn’t trap or crush him somehow. I put a cat-sized stuffed animal toy in it and ran it to see how the safety features work. There are sensors along the inside that detect if something is blocking their line of sight to the other side. Those would prevent it from scooping and are also used to reset the timer for scooping 10 minutes after the cat leaves. If somehow those sensors are not blocked and a cat were to get trapped behind the scooper, the scooper appears to detect an obstruction and stop. The little pressure before stopping is not enough to harm an adult cat at all. The manual states that it should not be used with kittens, and that seems like a fair safety precaution.
The litter area is 13.75″x15″, which is plenty large for my big and long adult male cat. He doesn’t like enclosed litter boxes and has trouble fitting in small litter boxes, so most other self-cleaning litter boxes would not work for him. The litter depth for the marked lines is 1.5″ to 2″. The dirty litter drawer is 15″ by 6″ and 3.5″ deep.
It takes 3 minutes to complete a cleaning cycle. It is a bit noisy, so it took my cat a while to get comfortable with it. I recommend leaving your old litter box around at first until your cat gets used to it. I measured the noise level to be about 57 dB on average. There is a louder 68 dB thunk at the start and when it dumps the litter into the drawer. That thunk would definitely scare an unsuspecting cat.
My cat is pretty picky about his litter box being clean at all times. He will use it eventually if it is dirty, but he will complain. This litter box helps to keep it clean without me having to do all the work constantly.

Not perfect, but best option currently available
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.Amazon Customer April 10, 2024Review source: AmazonI had two Littermaids and one stopped working. Lo and behold, they are discontinued, so I had to search elsewhere for a replacement. One of our kitties does not like covered boxes, and this was the only uncovered replacement I could find. It costed about $100 more than the Littermaid which hurt my soul a little, but they are actually larger inside than the Littermaid and have a reusable/washable tray, which I think is a bit of an improvement. The complaints you’ll see in these reviews about wasted litter are valid. You’ll want to be sure not to fill it over half way and flatten it back out if you have a kitty who will kick all the litter to one side. The lift at the end to get to the tray likely just needs to be a bit taller and steeper to fix this issue. The tracks are also above the rakes and covered, so I have not had the issue of litter getting caught in them like with the Littermaid. One final point is that it runs notably slower than the Littermaid, but also quieter, so it kinda evens out the pros-cons ratio. Overall a good replacement so far, but I imagine later versions will likely be a true overall improvement.
Edit: I am returning some time after my purchase to update this review, unfortunately for the worse. While my old Littermaid that was still going is STILL going strong, this litterbox has had continual issues. For twice the price, it also has 5x the issues. The rake continually gets stuck at the dump end and then just sits there going back and forth, unable to return to its original position. I have tried everything I can think of, but there is no fool proof way to fix it. Instead, I end up messing with it trying various things for 15-20 until it finally returns properly, just for it to do it again an hour later. At this point, I often opt to just unplug it an use it as a regular litterbox.

I was able to fix it and it works fine now… I think it was do to my cat piled up alot of the cat litter to one side which overloaded it and it came of of that side.. all in all not a bad cat box but the price I think is too high but I guess they all are

Impressed with the Features and Convenience
Allison Kolifrath April 6, 2024Review source: AmazonI really like the features of this litter box. The long-lasting litter refreshment is impressive, meaning less hassle for me. Absolutely adore the fact that there’s no need for litter trays – talk about convenience! Easy to refill and clean, and the automatic waste removal is a game changer. The self-cleaning feature is fantastic, and the superior odor control is just the cherry on top. This product has really made my life easier.

My cats get litter all over.

It's messy,
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.robert March 31, 2024Review source: AmazonThe box itself is nice size but there are no bags sold that properly fit the litter pan waste, and the rake doesn’t work well, still have to manually clean the box every day. Litter spilles out the sides under the box. Not good for the price.

It’ll scoop!
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.Maggie March 23, 2024Review source: AmazonThe first one I was sent did not work after one litter change – might have been user error. They quickly sent a replacement. I do wish is box had the option of a roof/enclosure and ran a little quieter. My other qualm is that it seems to waste clean litter, but I love that I can use clumping litter in this box rather than crystals. I feel this has successfully remedied all cat stink in my home. I’m still giving 4/5 stars because my issues are minor, and this is their first version of the product! I am confident they will make improvements over time. (P.S. I only have one polite male cat)
Edit: It has been 2 months. I am really happy with the litter box. I paired it with the worlds best litter + baking soda and a litter genie, and I feel like I have conquered most any litter stench in my home. Very happy with it, and happy to not be using litter trays/crystals anymore.

Cheap and messy
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.Casey N March 23, 2024Review source: AmazonIt does scoop out waste but not as efficiently as other brands.
Used cat litter falls on the floor under the machine when taking out the storage bin.
It starts scooping 10 minutes after the cat leaves the box, which isn’t enough time to solidify the waste. The clumps end up breaking up into small mushy pieces that don’t get scooped out. As its scoops it pushes out too much clean litter in the front. The small pieces that slide through the scoop end up getting mixed in with clean litter or pushed to the back of the litter box.
It takes about 2 minutes to finish 1 scoop cycle, its louder than the crystal litter version but not loud enough to be an issue if its in another room. It might wake you up if you sleep in the same room with it.
