Pros & Cons
Pros
- Odor Control: Several reviewers highlight the litter box's ability to control odors, especially when used with appropriate clumping litter. Some reviewers mention that they no longer notice any litter box smell in their homes.
- Cat Acceptance: Many cats readily accepted and used the litter box, with some even enjoying watching the cleaning process. Some reviewers noted that their cats preferred this box over other automatic models.
- Convenience: Customers appreciate the convenience of automatic scooping, which reduces the time and effort required for litter box maintenance. The easy-to-remove waste drawer is also frequently mentioned as a positive feature.
Cons
- Reliability Issues: A significant number of reviewers report that the litter box stopped working or experienced mechanical failures (such as the rake getting stuck) within a few months of purchase. Some reviewers mention that the plastic parts are prone to breaking.
- Noise Level: Many reviewers describe the litter box as loud or noisy during operation, which can be disruptive, especially in smaller living spaces or at night. The noise is often attributed to the motor or the rake scraping against the box.
- Ineffective Cleaning: Several reviewers note that the rake does not effectively clean the litter box, leaving waste behind or pushing clean litter into the waste bin. Some mention that the rake doesn't reach the bottom of the pan, leading to a build-up of soiled litter.

Not perfect but no "automatic" litter box is
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.Daniel Trimarco March 12, 2024Review source: AmazonUPDATE: one year later, I give this a 3 star review as the litter box jammed a few times and warped the mechanism so now it shoves litter under the container when it scoops. Will be getting rid of this and replacing with a different automatic litter box.
This is my third automatic litter box and overall it’s the best I’ve had. I had the PetSafe ScoopFree that used crystals for almost 10 years but got tired of the high price of crystal litter and hated when it got tracked throughout the house. I tried another automatic box that used clumping litter and in less than two months it had power issues but luckily Amazon refunded it so I went with this PetSafe version. The cats seem to like the clumping litter better which is great and I can go about 7-10 days without touching it. Does some litter get stuck in the rake, yes. Does it pick up every single clump, no. Those two things get people to hate this but overall no litter box is perfect and this still allows me to be hands free and then do a minimal two minute clean up every 7 or 10 days for two cats which is much better than scooping litter every day. I do wish they sold trash bags that fit the compartment as I ended up buying larger bags to fit the width and it just has a lot of extra bag which makes it harder to close.

Works well and is easy to use
Barry Pearl March 11, 2024Review source: AmazonFive stars for me, perhaps 4 stars for others because of the noise:
Setup: Because it comes fully put together, It took less than ten minutes to remove the unit from the box, and pour in the litter. It uses more litter than I thought, and directs you how much to use. There is no cover to this unit.
Using an electric eye, it uses a “rake” to scoop up the “used” litter ten minutes after the cat uses the box. It scoops the litter into a draw and it takes about two minutes. It also scoops up some (not a lot) clean litter and places that into the box. I have two cats and it filled up the draw in 2 days. This would mean emptying every four days for one cat.
The motor is loud, so loud that I would not recommend this for an apartment or in a busy part of a house. I keep mine in the basement. It seems to scoop up 95% of the dirty litter each time, often leaving a little bit in the box or attached to the “rake.”

A Game-Changer for Cat Owners
Paul Riedel March 9, 2024Review source: AmazonThere are a few reasons why I really like this product. The low maintenance is incredible, it takes the fuss out of having a cat. The superior odor control is fantastic, my house never smells like a litter box. The automatic waste removal and easy to clean components make my life so much easier. Plus, the U.S.-based customer care is a welcome bonus. Overall, a stellar product!

Works great!!
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.Elizabeth Miser March 1, 2024Review source: AmazonThough I didn’t get this item through Amazon, I got it from a local store. It works great! It doesn’t waste litter if you use a finer kind of litter. It does make a loud thump sound when cleaning but I just unplug it at night. My cat loves to watch it clean!

2 months later – Can confirm this works great!
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.Sean310 February 25, 2024Review source: AmazonI had the ScoopFree self-scooping Crystal litterpan (with WiFi) for 1½ years and I really liked it (vs. manually scooping).
BUT… crystals just cannot compare to clumping litter.
Crystals get full of urine quickly and my cat would stop using the pan after 40-50 uses. Crystals also aren’t great at odor control either, not by a long shot.
The urine stench (from 1 neutered male cat) was pretty bad after only 1½ weeks too. Another reason he wouldn’t want to use the old crystal litterpan after the first week or so.
Night & Day improvement with this Clumping litter version! With one cat you just empty the drawer once per week. With two cats it would be twice a week. Smells amazing all the time too! I used a very easy-to-find brand-name scented litter found at all local stores.
The hood (in the photo) is from the Crystal version of the ScoopFree pan – there is no dedicated hood available for this new clumping litterpan model as of this writing (Spring 2024). Hence my makeshift hood.
I had to set this hood about 2″ back so it doesn’t block the front door when self-scooping, as it wasn’t designed for this new box – but it works well in the interim.
Just make sure you don’t neglect emptying the front drawer once per week & topping off the litter and you’ll find this version is much, much easier to maintain vs. the Crystal litter version which required scrubbing the plastic pan out every 2 weeks and wiping it all down (30 minute ordeal).
I never bought the disposable crystal refills as they’re WAY too expensive.
If those trays had been only $5 each vs. $23 each (it’s $69 for 3), then I would have stuck with crystals but swapped in a fresh disposable tray every single week.
But using the plastic reusable pan and having to bleach & scrub it out every 2 weeks was really a nightmare. So my crystal ScoopFree litterpan is now in storage, just as an emergency backup.

A real person with a real review if you are deciding
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.Charissa Dantas February 22, 2024Review source: AmazonSo I looked at multiple kitty litter boxes before deciding on this one. The price was a little high but for what I wanted it to do (which is clean by itself) it’s fine. It’s easy to clean and remove the bottom tray. I do wish there was a holder for the scooper itself because you’ll still need a scooper. The size is good. One thing that’s annoying is my cat. He pees right at the front part of it which it is what is it. One thing I do recommend is to get a litter catcher of some kind when your cat exits. Overall I would recommend this one.

Perfect Litter Box
Billy February 19, 2024Review source: AmazonThis litter box is so convenient and I have not run into any of the issues other reviews talked about. Sure, it’s a little loud, but what do you expect from a litter box with a motor that needs to be strong enough to drag through all of the litter and push all of the waste to the end?
