Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Odor Control: Several reviewers highlight the litter box's ability to control odors, especially when used with appropriate clumping litter. Some reviewers mention that they no longer notice any litter box smell in their homes.
  • Cat Acceptance: Many cats readily accepted and used the litter box, with some even enjoying watching the cleaning process. Some reviewers noted that their cats preferred this box over other automatic models.
  • Convenience: Customers appreciate the convenience of automatic scooping, which reduces the time and effort required for litter box maintenance. The easy-to-remove waste drawer is also frequently mentioned as a positive feature.

Cons

  • Reliability Issues: A significant number of reviewers report that the litter box stopped working or experienced mechanical failures (such as the rake getting stuck) within a few months of purchase. Some reviewers mention that the plastic parts are prone to breaking.
  • Noise Level: Many reviewers describe the litter box as loud or noisy during operation, which can be disruptive, especially in smaller living spaces or at night. The noise is often attributed to the motor or the rake scraping against the box.
  • Ineffective Cleaning: Several reviewers note that the rake does not effectively clean the litter box, leaving waste behind or pushing clean litter into the waste bin. Some mention that the rake doesn't reach the bottom of the pan, leading to a build-up of soiled litter.

The motor on the PetSafe ScoopFree Clumping Self-Cleaning Litter Box is mildly loud, comparable to the noise of a fan on medium speed. The tray is separate from the box itself, so when you pick the unit up to move it, the tray is left behind. This is kind of a mixed bag of good and bad; it’s handy when the box is full of litter and you want to move it, because this makes it easier and lighter to manage, but if you don’t remember that the pieces are separate, you have to go back for the box left behind. The disposal tray could be of better quality – it doesn’t have a guiding track, so you have to get the tray placed back in just right. The electrical components work great, especially for an affordable model of a self-cleaning box. This is a brand I’ve trusted for years for various cat supplies, so I honestly expected better materials and construction. We have another automatic litter box plus a standard for our cats (we have 3 floors and wanted to guarantee no accidents while our kitten was still training), and it stands out that this model isn’t as good, which is something I hate to write when it comes to this brand. A solid 3 stars but needs an overhaul to impress me enough to rate it higher.

This self cleaning litter box is very effective at taking care of odors and keeping the litter clean. It definitely works well and allows for less manual cleaning of cat litter. It does make some sounds but it’s not overly loud.
It is a bit big so you have to have a good place to put it w enough space.
Overall, it works very well and is effective at masking the odor of cat poop since it sits through the cat litter on its own. I recommend it. This will save you time and effort to clean after your cat.

This item helps a lot with the everyday cleaning up of cat litter. However, my male cat loves to scatter the litter every where after using it and this causes the litter tray to get so full that gets stuck with so much sand that doesn’t close properly. But all and all it really helps me with the overall cleaning of the litter.

This litter box has worked wonderfully so far. I come out and open the lid of the disposal box and simply toss the contents and that’s it! A full cycle takes about 3 minutes for the rake to go through and although it does make a sound, it wasn’t shockingly loud, just a light buzzing noise. Some noise is to be expected from anything with moving parts. The important part is that it wasn’t loud enough to scare the cat away.

One critical thing we found out very fast! When using the automatic scooping feature always make sure the lid of the disposal box at the end is able to be easily lifted open!! When picking up the litter box and moving it, the lid can get trapped under the lip of the box area. When this happens, the rake approaches it with the litter and the lid should normally easily lift up, but when it is stuck it will explode open very loudly!! Our poor curious kitty got smacked in the face with it and got quite a scare when this happened! This is NOT the fault of the product with normal use but please always make sure it is able to swing open easily before leaving it to run.

The litter box times around 10 mins after the cat goes inside it before it starts the rake cycle to make sure the waste has time to solidify which is awesome! The company recommends using their crystal litter but so far it has worked perfectly with normal sandy/gravel litter and any brand should really be fine. Overall this litter box has been a fantastic addition, I just think it is way out of budget for most cat owners which is why I knocked off a star. The litter box is a lot larger than most boxes which is something to keep in mind, but is fairly lightweight and easy to move. Cleaning is simple and I have noticed less odor with it. I love the ease of use and the lack of scooping cat waste!

This self-cleaning kitty litter box by PetSafe works well and the setup was flawless and quick.

    Higher Price Point
    Easy and quick setup
    Large Size – 20.6″L x 10″W x 28.4″H
Good odor control and space saving design

I find this to be a bit loud and noisy and I do not love that – so it seems like it might not last forever.

I have three cats and was tired of cleaning the litter box all the time. This litter box is big, so if you are tight on space I wouldn’t recommend it for you. I really like it, the cats have no issue with it. They like to watch the rake when it is cleaning the box. The rake is on the slow side, but that doesn’t bother me, it get the job done nicely. I also like the fact that I don’t have to use “special” kitty litter. Overall, if you have the space near an outlet, I would recommend this.

We have seven cats in our house, and just as many cat boxes. We have almost all styles– plain uncovered, covered, top-down…. the only type we didn’t have was an auto-scooper like this one. I’ve had them before, and typically they’re prone to lots of little challenges that add up to “OK, so you scoop the box automatically and I just clean up after YOU (automatic cat box)”.

This box does have a few foibles, but overall, I’ve got to say it’s doing a great job! As usual, you REALLY want to pay attention to the fill level– I had filled pretty close to the top mark (maybe too close) and noticed that the rake was kind of “dragging slowly”. Additionally, with that filling, I noticed that some solid waste got BEHIND the rake (not sure if that was because of the amount of litter or not, but it’s another little quirk that happened). All that stuff aside, however– after about 3 weeks of use– I’m really glad we have it, and I’d rate it at about 95% efficiency (meaning it might “miss” a load about 1 in 20 times– pretty darn good for an autoscooper in my experience.

We use clumping corn litter (Nature’s Miracle brand) and it clumps just fine for this box– every few days when we clean boxes, this one’s little drawer (which you can line with a regular 6-8 gallon trash bag) is about 2/3 full. It’s true that occasionally the rake will “miss” a pile (I’m not sure HOW that happens, but it does) and I have occasionally found a cat stool outside, but near the box, as though the rake flung it out mid scoop (again, I may be making up stories here, as I did NOT see this happen). However, in the big picture, this is a pretty good automatic cat box– good enough that I would consider (were it not for the price) replacing all our boxes with this one.

Not perfect (someone message me if this exists in real life, ha ha!), but a heck of a lot better replacing a trash bag than actually SCOOPING!

    Customer Review September 18, 2023
    Review source: Amazon

UPDATE: As this has now reached the end of its life (~15 months after receiving it), I figure I should give a review update. The box should have lasted a lot longer based on how much it costs. The end of the box for us is based on the rake no longer going backwards (it moved to the end and no longer will return; I helped it along its way to the start spot and the same thing happened again). This happens even if I remove the rake and just let the mechanism go on its own.

While it was operable, we made it work for us. The rake did pull a lot of clean litter into the disposal area along with the clumps, so my solution for this was that about once a week I would dump the whole thing back into the box and scoop it. I was ok with this, it became part of my routine, and scooping once a week is better than multiple times per day. My cats ended up being able to kick a fair amount of litter over the sides, because they are pretty vigorous. However, this is something I will deal with because I will have either a covered box OR an automatic one. The safety concerns of having both in one unit are not worth it to me; I’d rather sweep.

We liked the box enough not to consider replacing it, though now that it no longer works we will be switching back to a regular old covered box. I can’t afford to replace an expensive box every year or so.

    ORIGINAL REVIEW:
We’ve been using this box for our two cats for about a week and a half and are very happy with it so far (particularly the teenager whose responsibility it is to scoop the box).

My cats can be a bit skittish, so I really wasn’t sure how this would go. They had been using a domed basic litter box before this. I left the old box next to the new one, but stopped cleaning it to encourage them to try out the new one. Turns out, this was unnecessary. My male cat hopped in almost instantly to try it out. The first photo shows the collection area after his initial “deposit.” A bit of clean litter went in, too. The second photo shows the raking mechanism after its maiden voyage. Most of that was gone after the next time it ran, and it isn’t too much. The third image shows the box after it was raked. Both cats were extremely interested and for the first day or two ran over to watch it run. My nervous female cat used it shortly after it ran for the first time, which shocked me (she peed in it and then went to poop in the old box… cats). After that, they never went back to their old box.

Volume-wise, I actually had expected it to be louder and so I was pleasantly surprised. I do sleep with rain sounds playing, and so that covers it up in the night. If it starts to bother us, I figure I will plug it into a smart plug and have it set to be off at night. The light on the button projects onto the ceiling, which was a surprise. It makes us laugh, particularly when it is flashing to let you know it will be running soon, and it is pretty bright, but not enough to wake me up at night (and I used to have to keep my phone flipped over at night because of the light whenever I got a notification). The size is a bit of a problem, as it does not fit into the spot where the old box was. However, we like it enough that we are going to be moving some furniture around to accommodate it. But be aware that this is a large box and it needs to have clearance at one end so that you can pull out the drawer to empty it.

Other than a quick nightly peek into the collection area, we did not touch the box for the first week. The final photo is of the box at that point, when we emptied out the collection area and topped off the litter. I will do that a little bit sooner in the future, because it was slightly overfull. As you can see, the litter in the box remained nicely smoothed out, even with two cats using it. I’d love it if they sold drawstring bags that were specifically made to fit into the collection area, so that you could just pull it out and drop it in the trashcan. My cats are terrible litter scatterers, but this was no worse than their old covered box, and maybe actually a bit better.

Overall, my family is very happy with this box and it suits our needs perfectly.
