Pros & Cons
Pros
- Odor Control: Several reviewers highlight the litter box's ability to control odors, especially when used with appropriate clumping litter. Some reviewers mention that they no longer notice any litter box smell in their homes.
- Cat Acceptance: Many cats readily accepted and used the litter box, with some even enjoying watching the cleaning process. Some reviewers noted that their cats preferred this box over other automatic models.
- Convenience: Customers appreciate the convenience of automatic scooping, which reduces the time and effort required for litter box maintenance. The easy-to-remove waste drawer is also frequently mentioned as a positive feature.
Cons
- Reliability Issues: A significant number of reviewers report that the litter box stopped working or experienced mechanical failures (such as the rake getting stuck) within a few months of purchase. Some reviewers mention that the plastic parts are prone to breaking.
- Noise Level: Many reviewers describe the litter box as loud or noisy during operation, which can be disruptive, especially in smaller living spaces or at night. The noise is often attributed to the motor or the rake scraping against the box.
- Ineffective Cleaning: Several reviewers note that the rake does not effectively clean the litter box, leaving waste behind or pushing clean litter into the waste bin. Some mention that the rake doesn't reach the bottom of the pan, leading to a build-up of soiled litter.

Not as great as I'd hoped, but still helpful
Incentivized Incentivized review: The reviewer received a benefit for sharing feedback.Lady Undertaker September 16, 2023Review source: AmazonI have five cats, and they produce a TON of waste. I’ve been switching each regular litter box over to electric as I can, and this is now my third that automatically scoops. Here are my thoughts:
It’s better than a plain, non-automatic litter box given but it has lots of room for improvements. Despite its issues, I’m still glad I have it because it helps me stop being a slave to the scoop. My other two automatic boxes are similar to Litter Robots (rotating barrel). They all have pros and cons.
Pros
– It runs automatically a few minutes after it senses the cat leave, so I don’t have to stay on top of scooping to make sure the cats have a clean box all day.
– If the cat re-enters during scooping, it pauses until it detects that they’ve left.
– The collection tray can be used with or without a trash bag.
– Setup is simple. Assemble the pieces and plug it in. Then it operates automatically. If you want to force it to operate it, there’s literally one button. No apps. No notifications. No settings.
Cons
– It’s not truly “set it and forget it.” I need to check on mine daily. For some reason, my cats seems to push all the litter to one side. Not front to back, where it can be raked and evened back out. Right to left, which means one side is much higher than the proper level. Raking forces a bunch of clean litter into the tray. Plus, if the cats seem to prefer that box for the day, I need to keep an eye on the collection tray. It built up to the top (on one side!) recently, causing yucky stuff to get into the mechanism that raises/lowers the lid over the tray.
– It’s LOUD. Much louder than my other two automatic litter boxes. My cats are brave, so they don’t care, but it’s annoying to hear while I’m working or sleeping.
– It’s also super SLOW to complete operation. At least I have multiple boxes for my cats to choose from, but they inevitably want to interrupt the one that’s cleaning. If they use the box when the rake is over on the far end (mid-cycle), then it will continue to keep that lump on the wrong side of the rake and never be able to dump it.
– The rake itself does a mediocre job. In mine, it doesn’t seem to reach down far enough. If your cat digs deep (and this box is pretty shallow), then they’ll leave their pee along the bottom of the tray where the rake can’t snag it. Other things get snagged in the rake and stuck there, or they get on the backside of the rake and become un-rakeable. It needs to be physically cleaned. If a pee clump crumbles, it just gets spread around instead of collected into the tray.
– The overall assembly leaves something to be desired. The litter tray is shallow. The plastic pieces fit together in a clunky way. The collection tray is a drawer that doesn’t slide very easily. There are lots of ways clean litter can end up in the collection tray or beneath the entire contraption. If you don’t align the collection tray exactly perfectly, there’s a gap where litter falls onto the floor. The whole litter box must be moved to clean underneath it properly.
I feel like this litter box saves me time and effort on a daily basis, but then I pay for it having to clean up in other ways. I still have to scoop if something is too low for the rake or gets trapped on the wrong side of it. The rake itself isn’t fun to clean and gets stuff trapped in it all the time. If your cats move all the litter to the right or left, it needs to be evened out or it’ll load the collection tray unevenly (possibly leading to mechanisms getting gummed up with nastiness).
So. Better than nothing, but not perfect.

No smell, no scooping!
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.G.E. Martin September 15, 2023Review source: AmazonUse clumping litter, not the crystals. This version will scoop out the clumped pee vs. liquid at the bottom if you use crystals. Yeah, it’s loud. And huge. But it works. Line the pull out tray with a trash bag then just tie a knot and toss. Easy peasy. We bought three of these for our two cats.

Loud!!
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.Pete September 12, 2023Review source: AmazonI had the original version of this product for close to 15 years, when it finally took it’s last scoop, replacing it with this one was an easy choice. I did however check a few alternatives some simply too many bells, whistles and dependencies for my taste.
Looking forward to using clumping litter for a change, and the disposal box is a vast improvement.
However…..I was not prepared for how loud and slow it is! Perhaps a night mode that limits or curtails the scooping could be added.
Otherwise pleased with the product as are the two spoiled cats that use it!
Edit – I ended up getting a timer that turns the litter box off overnight, absolutely recommend doing so for anyone using it in a small environment.

Wasting litter
Verified purchase Verified purchase: This reviewer bought the product.funnyladyjane September 12, 2023Review source: AmazonI wanted to love this litter box, as I have an older model, but wanted to be able to use clumping litter, (I tried two different types), and thought the catch recepticle would make cleaning easier. But the rake for some reason pushes lots of clean litter into the waste box, so you have to scoop the clumps out anyway and toss the rest back into the litter pan. I would have loved a litter box cover as previous models have. No such thing for this one. So my cats for some reason pee on the edges, (never had that problem very much with the older model), and scatter the litter all over the floor, also more than before. So there’s some problem with the design. Also something about the plastic’s surface makes the clumping litters adhere to it much more than other boxes. So all in all, too much fussing to clean up for the expense. Sadly, I am returning it.

Purr-fectly Engineered Automatic Litter Box
Incentivized Incentivized review: The reviewer received a benefit for sharing feedback.EroCo September 11, 2023Review source: AmazonUpdate: Months later, this litter box is still going strong and hasn’t had any issues. But I am taking away a star because it really does waste a lot of litter for no reason. I have to filter the litter that goes into the drawer since so much of it is just clean and reusable.
Here is my original review:
This is a review of the PetSafe ScoopFree Clumping Self-Cleaning Litter Box. I recently got it and want to provide a thorough review from the point of view of someone who has three cats and has owned several types and brands of automatic litter boxes. I have also previously used other PetSafe products, so I can comment about the responsiveness of this company in case there are any issues.
The ScoopFree self-cleaning solution was quite easy to set up. When you order it, expect to get a super-sized box from Amazon. The box is a bonus because you can be sure this is going to become your next Cat Adventureland. At any rate, the large box is great because the litter box arrived in perfect condition and was easy to unbox.
You’ll find the litter box itself, a power cord, an instruction manual, and a welcome/warranty leaflet in the box. The litter box is around 18.5 inches wide by 26 inches long. It comes with a power cord that is about 7 feet long, so keep this in mind when choosing a location for it. It is kind of bulky, but this is needed so that there is enough room for larger cats and to keep the electronics and motor protected from whatever “might come its way.”
Setting up the litter box was very, very easy. I spent less than five minutes unboxing it, putting it into its final position, filling the litter to the fill line, attaching the power cord, and plugging it in.
I use Purina Tidy Cats Multi-Cat Clumping Litter (Free and Clean). This is not a lightweight litter, and were it not for the fact that one of my cats seems to prefer it, I would probably opt for using a lighter litter. I say this because I think the heavier litter is harder on the cleaning motor, and I believe this to be an issue with the demise of previous self-cleaning boxes. Having said that, PetSafe says you can use any clumping litter with this box. The manual does have a specific recommendation: ScoopFree Premium Crystal Litter.
I am including a video of the litter box in action using “simulated cat poop.” Usually, the litter box detects that a cat has used the litter box and has left before it runs the rake. In this case, I pushed the “manual” clean button located at the top of the litter box. You’ll find the video to be slow and boring.
The rake runs through the litter at a leisurely pace and would stop itself if it detected a cat entering the box again. The video is about 3 minutes long and depicts the entire cycle–feel free to skip ahead — you won’t miss much. As far as the sound in the video, it seems much louder than it actually is. I used a decibel meter close to the litter box and found that the sound level was around 60 decibels when I was hovering near the box – this is about the level of normal conversation. If I put the meter right up to the area near the rake (where the motor is) – it was closer to around 70 decibels (more like a vacuum cleaner). I guess there is some possibility that this could spook some cats. It was never an issue with my cats, but the instructions included information about how to gradually introduce the new litter box. Spoiler alert: The gist of it is to leave the box unplugged at first to get them used to it.
I am pleased with the no-nonsense look of the box and the fact that it is going to be easy to clean.
The drawer for litter is quick to pull out and dump. It is also wonderful that you can use a trash bag if you want to cover the drawer for dirty litter–this is a step forward when compared to a similar product from Littermaid, which requires you to purchase cheap plastic liners periodically. It’s also easy to pull out the litter tray itself to dump the litter and replace it. You will be periodically adding litter to keep the quantity of litter between the clearly marked fill lines, but now and then you’ll want to start fresh, and they have made this an easy proposition. You don’t have to scoop it out, you can just pull out the tray and dump it into a trash can.
They also thought enough to make it easy to remove and clean the rake. This is one of the biggest issues I have seen with previous automatic boxes I have owned. The design also does a good job of keeping the track used by the rake covered so it will be less likely to get gummed up by litter.
I believe this litterbox is built to last. It solves several flaws from previous boxes I have owned, which is a big deal. Just in case, I can tell you that I have previously dealt with PetSafe, and I have found them to be very responsive and helpful with tech support issues. I have also had the experience of using their warranty service, and I can tell you that they do honor their warranties. In this case, by the way, you get a 1-year warranty.
I have gone back and forth between automatic boxes and “manual clean” boxes. They both have their upsides. My other boxes are the sifting litter boxes from Arm and Hammer. They get the job done, but I like the idea of having at least one or two litter boxes that are “always clean.” I have time to clean the boxes about twice a week, so it really helps to have one that is automatic.
My final verdict is that I am happy to recommend this product. They have thought it through and provided owners with a simple, easy-to-clean solution that will likely stand the test of time. You will find that there are cheaper solutions, but unfortunately, I have personally found that you get what you pay for when it comes to automatic litter boxes. You will find that cheaper ones will do their job, but they just don’t last. If it is in the budget, do yourself a favor and go for something that will last beyond the warranty.

Easy to assemble and use
Incentivized Incentivized review: The reviewer received a benefit for sharing feedback.chiqui77 September 11, 2023Review source: AmazonGot this automatic litter box for use in a multi cat household. PROS: Assembly only took a few minutes. The motor is somewhat noisy but as expected with an automatic litter box. Not noisy enough to scare the cats from using it. CONS: I think the cable could & should be a bit longer for ease of use. And the box once set up does take up a lot of space in the bathroom.

Easy to assemble and fill, works great
Incentivized Incentivized review: The reviewer received a benefit for sharing feedback.Korean food September 10, 2023Review source: AmazonAfter a long wait, I finally received this automatic litter box. This self-cleaning garbage can really solved a lot of problems for me. Not only does it do away with the traditional litter shovel, but the automatic removal of lumpy litter freed my hands. Instead of having to manually clean the litter box every day, this self-cleaning litter box only needs to be emptied once a week. What impresses me most is its excellent odor control, which ensures that the air in your home is always fresh. In addition, its self-cleaning function makes daily cleaning and replenishment a breeze. Ideal for both single-cat and multi-cat homes. Highly recommended for every cat owner!

Has some minor issues, overall though is a great device
Incentivized Incentivized review: The reviewer received a benefit for sharing feedback. Will Conner September 9, 2023Review source: AmazonThis automatic litter box is a average working auto scooping litter box it gets stopped a lot when its running and doesn’t seem to do a super good job getting all of the clumped litter out of the pan. The grate that runs through the pan to scoop the litter is a bit to wide so smaller pieces will stay in the pan and not fully emptying it out. The motor on this device is also a bit noisy while its running so if that something that will bother you this isn’t the device for you. The compartment where the litter is scooped into is a good size that can hold a decent amount of clumped litter. Emptying and cleaning this litter box wasn’t super difficult just follow the instructions on how to take is apart to clean the separate pieces. All in all this is a pretty ok litter box nothing amazing but just average.
