This OpensSky automatic litter box is a huge step up from my older “drum” type litter box.
The biggest improvement is the smell containment. There is an automatic lid above where the litter falls that opens and closes each time the litter box dumps out the waste. That lid is doing a great job keeping out most of the foul smells.
You may still have some of the wet litter stick to the edges of the box that may not come off the first rotation but I see that in my automatic “drum” litter box as well.
I like that the top is open so my big cat doesn’t need to bend down while hes doing his business.
The app is functional and has useful notifications as I would expect. It also measures the cat’s weight so you can tell which cat has used it if you have more than one cat.
I do have to say the box is a lot noisier than my old litter box when it is rotating through its cleaning cycle. My cat’s are already gone by the time the 7-minute delay timer starts the cleaning but some cats may get spooked by the whining motor noise. I attached a video to demonstrate the noise it makes.
In all this box is a huge step up from my drum-type automatic litter box and looks way better too.

This is my third automatic cat litter and so far my favorite. I started with a LR3, which had issues with sensors just outside of the warranty period. After trying to get it to work properly, it got wet from some side rain while on our screened patio and died. So we moved on to Meowant, which again, lasted approximately a year before encountering too many errors. So now to Petsafe. I like that it has the weight of the user, although it doesn’t have the cat profiles set up like MW. It is more open than either of the past 2, which is HUGE for me. I hate hate hate the enclosed litter boxes for cleaning them. As a germaphobe, reaching in my hand to scrub it out was just a big ick. I also struggled to get litter into the small holes and had to resort to pouring boxes into a mini trash can then into the litter box just to not spill it everywhere. What a pain. The MW chamber was hard to latch back together or get the bag in, causing errors and cycling problems. This chamber is a drawer style so much easier to load a bag in and get it set properly. It’s much bigger too, closer to LR3. It was very easy to set up with the app and get it assembled. The app shows me the status of the fullness of the waste drawer, and when the cat used it last. But it’s so open on top, I love that I can get it clean easily now and not feel like the sides are built up with dust at all times. My cats have asthma so that was worrying me, that they were breathing in the dust because of the others being too enclosed. It is kind of high, a kitten would struggle getting in so a ramp would be needed.

the worse part of owning a cat is scooping the litter. so i’m really happy with this litter box because its a lot easier to just change the litter bag once a week. it does a good job not smelling during this period as well. i like the open top design because so theres no risk of cat getting trapped as they can easily jump out the top

It was extremely easy to set it up to be honest and compared to other litter boxes this one was the easiest basically a two step process all I did was set up the waste box and add the legs and done, now after trying it out my cats are absolutely loving it they definitely like the open top design is perfect since it does look good and the buttons are designed to perfection, now let me tell you guys how simple it is to clean this cat litter box I know it’s a bit pricey but it’s way more worth it than going for lesser quality litter boxes that isn’t packed with these many features, for me yes it is worth the price for sure you won’t find anything better than Petsafe and no it’s not very heavy so it’s not a pain to move it around or anything, now let’s get to the app which was fairly easy to connect it and hook it up to the wifi so no complaints very simple and I’m not too good with phones, overall for sure a well worth litter box trust me your cats are going to absolutely love it.

  6. Defective product!!

I bought two of these units in April. They were great and we absolutely loved them UNTIL four minths later when the silicone base warped, creating a hazardous entry. I contacted customer service. They were very nice, apologized for the very unusal problem and sent me a whole new unit. When the second unit developed the same problem, customer service was again nice, acted shocked to hear it happened again and immediately sent a new unit. Now, it’s been 7 months since i bought the first unit and the base on one of the replacement units has warped!! I can’t believe they can’t provide replacements for a oart that probably is less than $25! My two older cats are about 10 1/2 pounds each. Fool me once, shame on me! Fool me 3 times – shame on this company for selling a defective product and acting surprised about the issue!!

This is such an expensive litterbox it really deserves some careful consideration. From the same brand I have a different, MUCH less expensive automatic litter box that works GREAT. But that experience is what made me consider this one since it has a lot more features.

Out of the box it comes as something that doesn’t really need to be assembled. You do attach the feet but there’s no order so it’s easy to pop them in. And then there’s the waste reservoir. Other than that, you plug it in and add litter. It’s pretty straight forward. While it initially seems bulky it fit tidying into the corner of the large closet that I use as my “cat restroom”, where my litter boxes are (one per cat – 3 cats). It’s just a tad taller than my other automatic litterbox but takes up less horizontal space. It uses a standard power source so just about any that plugs in will work.

One thing to note – on the sides of the box are what appears to be hand holds for lifting. They are NOT handles. If you try to carry it that way parts of the device will come apart. Not break, just disassemble. It says in the manual but I figured out quickly, that you need to lift it from the bottom.

Noise-wise, it’s not any noisier than my other automatic litter box. Not that it matters to me since they’re in their own closet.

The manual is actually a downloadable PDF you get using the QR code, but everything is pretty straight forward. I did see some folks have trouble with getting connected via the app because the litter box connects to 2.4 GHz. Most modern routers have both 2.4 and 5 GHz. If you’ve connected smart plugs or smart switches or security cameras you’ll be familiar with it. Sometimes you have to get into your routers settings to tell it to allow both connections. My litter box connected immediately.

I’ll come back to update once I observe my cats actually using it and also monitoring via the app (which I think detects your cat by weight, since it calibrates to the weight of the litter).

Easy to get set up, easy to start using the app. Let’s see if it’s easy for my cats to negotiate!

If it works better than my other PetSafe automatic litter box then I will give this 5 starts, even though it’s >2.5 times the cost of my other one.

We have four cats, and that’s a lot of litter box cleaning. I have a bad back and awful knees which make cleaning the boxes frequently something that usually leaves me super sore (or takes up a lot of time because I wait to do them all in one day to minimize my pain). I have really wanted a self cleaning box for a while, but I also had worries around the safety. This was a big jump for me, but I gave this OpenSky box a shot.

Initially, I received a litter box that was damaged. As a Vine member, I’m allowed to seek customer service, but at no point are the sellers allowed to know that I’m part of this program. Normally, I would have just left a review that what I got was broken and move on, but this was such a big deal for our house (and after several attempts to fix the piece myself) I decided to reach out to the PetSafe customer service. Once the Amazon link directed me to the website, I went through the process of trying to right the wrong. While the website itself wasn’t super helpful with my specific issue, I was able to connect with the help chat. It took a bit of waiting (about 10-15 minutes for someone to connect with me), but once their CS person began helping me they were able to resolve the problem quickly. (And also, just for the record, I told them there was no damage to the box that I could see; when I received the replacement, however, it was apparent that a cushion piece was missing from inside the original and that likely caused the damage.) So, to summarize that – considering they didn’t know my order was any different from a normal one, I can say pretty confidently that their customer service is on point.

Now, the litter box. The minor assembly required to get the box going is pretty straightforward. My biggest hurdle was getting it out of the box (me and lifting don’t mix well), but my boyfriend could take it out easy peasy. It’s not super heavy, it’s just awkward if you’re a short person with a bad back. The app was not quite as easy to set up, in spite of there not being a lot of steps. That part took me the longest. I also feel like the cleaning notification could be better. This box is for my two girls (bc the boys eat electronics and are the reason we can’t have nice things), and I was shocked by how quickly they took to the new box and completely ignored their old one. One of my girls is extremely skittish so I was afraid the box itself might be intimidating, and especially the sound. It doesn’t faze her at all. I also had some concerns about one of them using the box not long after the other, but that was no issue at all – once a cat goes in the box and comes out the cleaning delay starts, and will restart if another cat uses it.

Here are the most important bits for me:

    – Even though the girls still kick litter out of the box, it’s not quite as bad as it was with the regular box (plus, it’s great to have the little mat to help curb some of the spread).
    – The smell isn’t as bad as their regular box. The interim between poops and cleans is really the only time I smell anything, and it’s not the worst, so I can live with that.
    – The sound isn’t quiet, but also isn’t disruptive. The litter box is the next room over from my bedroom. I can hear when the cleaning starts so I was afraid it might wake me or keep me from falling asleep. It didn’t take long to become background noise like our furnace or humidifier.
    – I feel like my cats are safe. While I feel confident right now that nothing is going to happen, I do have in the back of my mind that maybe as this box ages something could happen and one of the cats could get stuck. I still have a small worry about that because when the box is in cleaning mode, the cat wouldn’t be able to get out on its own. But I do know that if I heard it, I’d be able to pull the plug, disconnect the globe from the base, and get my cat back out.

All in all, this has been a great experience for our household, and I’m so happy that I decided to give a self-cleaning box a try.

  9. The picky cat’s dream box

This litter box is going to change your life- but not without a little patience at first! My cat was hesitant to step all the way in, especially keeping her tail inside (drama queen), so it took a few rounds of coaxing and treats to win her over. But once she accepted it? Life. Got. So. Much. Easier.

She’s always been sketchy about enclosed spaces above her head, so I knew the round/fully enclosed models were a no-go. The open roof design is perfect.. open enough to feel safe for her, while still keeping things neat and contained for me.

If you’ve got a picky cat who hates enclosed boxes but you still want the convenience of a self-cleaning setup, this one is definitely worth a try! The automatic cleaning feature works great, and I swear my house smells better already. No more daily scooping, and way less stress for both of us.

This litterbox is really awesome even if our cat is still getting used to it. It has a surprisingly small footprint and is really easy to clean when needed. The setup is really quick and easy and I was able to connect to the app with minimal issues. Our cat does not like change and has only used it a couple times so far but she seems willing to use it with minimal coercion. We have used other robotic litter boxes in the past and they worked well but this one is definitely the next step from that. It is on the pricey side but, compared to similar types of boxes, it isn’t that much of a premium.
